Friday win, Nice. Ben C with a huge 15 K game. Getting a 10 run rule game and not going into bullpen, helps for weekend. Even though it would be nice to get some guys innings in games that we have a huge lead. Even with wins our RPI and SOS gets worse. this is going to continue for a while , with schedule we have upcoming. So we just need to get wins to improve our record and stay at top of Big East.

Go Huskies !!!

Intermediate Goals
(1) 9 - 4 ....... 6 - 0 (next 12 games)
(2) 9 - 3 ....... 0 - 0 (middle 13 games)

5 - 5 / .500 ........ 6 - 4 / .600 - Over Top 15 ( out of Conf)

8 - 1 / .888 ......... 8 - 3 / .727 - New England
1 - 0 / .000 ......... 19- 9 / .678 - Big East regular season

0 - 0 / .000 ......... 2 - 2 / .500 - Big East tourney

Post season Criteria
(1) 15 - 12 / .556 ...... 37 - 23 / .617
(2) 48 ....... < 50 RPI

Definitely worried about the RPI drop with the Big East schedule instead of the AAC. But so long as we win games and win them easily (like this shortened weekend) I think we’ll be ok. But tough to shake some of those lost noncon opportunities.

Almost started to forget about Covid coming into play, as season was going along without a glitch. But realistically not surprised it happened. As DBMill noted in a previous post, we did have 3 extra games scheduled. Really hoping we play Bryant on Tuesday. Fingers crossed.

Some random thoughts

(1) Disappointed games vs Gtown cancelled. You never know in baseball, but a good chance we would have gotten 2 more wins ( and we need wins).

(2) On bright side, even if we won both games our RPI would have probably been worse. Never mind if we lost 1 or both games.

(3) With Gtown (271) having one of worse RPI in nation, we replace them with teams with a better RPI (URI 41, NU 50). So in a weird sort of way, this may help us in long run.

(4) We hopefully play Creighton next weekend in a battle for first place. They just beat Villanova twice, and have a solid RPI of 58. I believe the last 2 games of that series are also cancelled due to Covid.

(5) Starting to really enjoy season and potential of this team, I pray Covid stays in check and we complete a full (or relatively full) season.

(6) I will revisit chart below prior to next weekend series with Creighton. With cancellation of 2 BE games and Bryant game in possible jeopardy, I realize chart needs updating

Go Huskies !!!

It will be nice having a series next weekend where the goal is winning the series, instead of knowing losing just one game hurts you.

Was hoping UConn was being overly cautious, and that season would definitely restart soon. With 9 positive tests, I am getting a bit nervous of Xavier series getting cancelled. We were just starting to get rolling and was looking forward to playing Creighton.

I was going to revise chart, but I am going to wait until decision is made on season restart. I obviously hope all players and coaches are doing well. Lets pray we get through this safely and soon.

The season will be what it is. When we play games, win them. Hope no one gets seriously ill. And what happens to the schedule, and what it does to the post-season, happens.

Ahhhh... college baseball! Moved up 11 spots this week (@37) by not even playing a game ?.

Funny, I had noticed UConn's rise in the RPI since last weekend's truncated Georgetown series, and had been thinking of posting something on it at the end of this weekend's games. Not sure if this is an example of great minds thinking alike, or just the opposite.

I would take that regional, but that asterisk means something. Projected as Big East tourney winner and at this point I think it is going to take that to get in.

-> There are 30 automatic bids awarded to conference champions (the Ivy League canceled its season and will not have an automatic qualifier this year). These 11 are safe bets to be one-bid leagues, regardless of how their conference tournaments shake out (we’ve moved the America East, Mountain West and Southland into this category this week after their top contenders saw their prospects dim considerably): Sure-fire one-bid leagues: America East, Atlantic 10, MAC, Mountain West, NEC, OVC, Patriot, SWAC, Southland, Summit, WAC

The following eight conferences are likely to be one-bid leagues, but each has at least one team with at least a shot at an at-large bid, though the poor RPIs of the rest of their conference mates figure to drag some of them down below at-large range as the season continues. Likely one-bid leagues (potential at-large teams in parentheses):

Atlantic Sun (Liberty and Florida Gulf Coast)
Big East (UConn, Creighton)
Big South (USC Upstate)
Colonial (Northeastern)
Horizon (Wright State)
MAAC (Fairfield)
SoCon (Western Carolina, Samford)
Sun Belt (South Alabama, Georgia Southern, Louisiana)
  • Creighton (14-8 overall, 6-1 Big East, No. 59 RPI) went 3-1 at Georgetown last week but still dropped 13 spots to No. 59 in the RPI. UConn (18-14 overall, 4-2 Big East, No. 37 RPI) returned from a COVID pause to split four games with Xavier, but its challenging nonconference schedule continues to prop up its RPI, keeping the Huskies in solid at-large position if they can win the Big East regular season title.
