There is a lot of conversation amongst the commentators regarding the slickness of the court. Several players have had injuries related to falling and either lost (Sharapova) or withdrew, including the player who eliminated Nadal.

Also discussed was the short duration of time between the French Open and Wimbledon leaving little time for players to adjust to playing on grass courts.

Regardless, this is the oddest Wimbledon I have seen...I rarely get to see the early rounds because of work....

Also #9 Wozniaki went down as well. And you are right - Isner, Cilic, and I forget - maybe one other withdrew with injuries on the men's side. and of course the upset of Nadal. I think it has made the tourney exciting...
 
Yes, a lot of newer younger players will be front and center, assuming they can escape injury as well.

Slone Stevens, a 20 year old USA player is currently playing a tight 3rd - up three match points....

Tsonga also retired.

The men's side is still all about Djoker, Murray, and Fed until someone else proves otherwise. However, the bottom just fell out of the lower half of the women's draw. Sloane Stephens has a golden opportunity to make the semifinals, and she needs to take advantage of it. Petra Kvitova, who won here in 2011, has a golden opportunity to make it out of her quarter and contend for the championship as well. The top half of the draw is more orderly still. Li Na and Radwanska figure to meet in their quarter, and Serena should sail smoothly to the semis unless Sam Stosur is able to invoke the spirit of the 2011 US Open final. She has hasn't done a heck of a lot since then, I must say.

yeah....looks like a meltdown. Sad. Who knows, maybe he will pull it out, but he is down a break in the fourth. They stopped jumping around so we can watch the match. Would be more fun if more of his shots went in....
 
Still, there's some great tennis in the match....sometimes I think that I am watching a doubles match minus two players :eek: with all the great net play

Wonder why there are so close together?? Surprised when I saw promo's on TV. I was like 'already? we just finished the French???'
 
Roger back up a break and wins his game to take a 4-3 lead in the fourth.

I love Roger, but I think his time is done. I just don't see him winning another slam with his age, and the younger guys just better than he is. Well, specifically Djokavic.

I wonder if he will do a Björn Borg and retire while there was still a lot of wins in him. I remember being so disappointed when Borg called it quits. Used to love to watch him play.
 
Stakhovsky playing out of his mind...he is up a mini-break in the fourth set tie break. Some great tennis I must say
 
Stick a fork in him, he's done....wow I can't believe it. Federer out in the second round in an amazing 4 set match 7-6 6-7 5-7 7-6

RFed is a total class act. One of the classiest guys on the circuit in my opinion. Never makes excuses, never badmouths anyone, but sadly I think his best days are behind him. I love watching him play and root like hell for him, but just can't see him winning another title. I wonder why so many big upsets this year? On both sides. The top seeds are falling like flies, as someone said earlier.

I recall Borg took a break. then 2 years after his loss, he asked for a wild card to play Wimbledon and was REFUSED. I never understood that.

He was on the professional circuit in 81, then in 82 played one tourney which he lost (a minor one, not a slam), and then announced his Retirement in 83 which shocked the tennis world. I understand that he played in a minor tourney in early 83 and another in 84, but lost both.

He did try a comeback in the early 90s, but it was not successful.

Aside from Exhibitions, that's all they wrote for Mr Borg. Sad.
 
The Federer loss was inconceivable. The man went nine years without missing a quarterfinal. There were definitely signs he was heading off a cliff when he put up little resistance against Tsonga in the French, but a loss like yesterday???

Whatever Fed does or doesn't do going forward, we were lucky to have him. If you look at the great athletes of the previous decade, most have been significantly besmirched (Tiger, Bonds, Lance). LeBron didn't really reach the prime of his career until this decade, Bolt straddled decades (and may not be clean in any event). That leaves Michael Phelps (whose greatness, though undeniable, didn't come into focus but once every four years) and Roger. Fed is was, and always will be, the freaking man.

And yes, go Andy! Win Wimbledon for GB so that we stop having to hear about it!!!

Borg had already essentially checked out when he was 25.

I know...it isn't the most perfect of comparisons. Yet Roger has a lot of great tennis in him as did Borg at the time of his retirement.

He was one of my favorites.
 
I think Federer has one more run in him. Remember Pete Sampras? Everyone was saying the same thing before he won his last US Open title. I am hoping Federer will win at least one more title before he calls it quits...

He actually said in the presser that followed the match that he has no plans to retire at this time. YAY! :D
 
As of my typing, 4 women are left, but no American men. Sloane Stephens is on the court now, after a lengthy rain delay. A new name to me, Alicia Riske, knocked out Radwanska the Younger earlier today.
Madison Keys plays tomorrow vs. Radwanska the Elder.
 
Sloane is playing a Czech (Cetkovska) and has secured the 1st set in a breaker.
