Who's your list for next HC?

I agree

thought the same-local roots with yearly Hartford camps.
He has no experience recruiting and likely few HS connections, so he'd need a lot of help there.

his only good season he had McKenzie Milton. Just another example of a coach who had one good QB or one genius OC that carried them.

UCF wasn't in a bad position when he took over. They went 0-12 the year before but that was because they quit on George O'Leary. Most of the team was O'Leary's recruits. Now look at what he's done with all the resources at Nebraska
That’s how it goes. One or two good seasons and people think you can’t miss.

I think one thing that might be getting overlooked by he team's play and Edsall's retirement is scheduling announcements. We know from Edsall in the past UConn was in talks with Pitt, Rutgers, etc. AD David Benedict needs to prioritize getting these games finalized and announced. Get some more big time bag games. Public outlook on UConn is low right now and it would help with how UConn is perceived by candidates and recruits.

Diaco buyout money is off the books. Can pay 1.5-2 mil for a coach which is more than any in the MAC and match AAC schools. So money talks. We need 1) excitement 2) innovation.
And not necessarily in that order.

.-.
Hire a current head coach who’s been extremely successful both with wins on the field and in recruiting. Will need to be from one level down ($).

Just saying that after Diaco, please don’t go after another “young, rising star” DC or OC. They almost never work out, either in basketball or football. Lessons learned.

Here is the blurb from Vannini's article:

-> It's very early in the process and replacement candidates have yet to emerge, but potential names to watch could include Towson head coach Rob Ambrose, Arizona defensive coordinator Don Brown, former Temple and Miami head coach Al Golden, Holy Cross head coach Bob Chesney and former quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky. <-
Yep everybody will be naming guys with familiar first names like Randy, Paul, Bob, Joe, Al, Don etc..
Let's go with a less vanilla first name. I base this on nothing but a gut feeling.

Eric meet Cory, Cory say hello to Eric.

Mangini would be interesting, not an exciting personality but is known to be a great X's and O's guy.

I would think Mangini might do well in the transfer portal just because of his previous coaching positions. Most Jets fans today (I am a Jets fan) consider his firing a mistake as he built a solid team but was undercut by Favre's torn bicep in the middle of the 2008 season.

Mangini coached the Jets into the playoffs in 2006 and was then given the nickname Mangenius. Pennington got injured early in his second year which torpedoed the season. In 2008 when Favre was healthy the Jets actually rose to # 1 in the NFL power rankings after week 12, then Favre injured his bicep. Mangini was fired with a 9-7 record in 2008.

Mangini used to host a summer youth football camp in Hartford.

Also hasn't coached since 2015.

I bleed Blue, believe me. But I think we're in our worst position ever to attract a decent coach. I think we need to find a hungry positions coach from a good football school who wants a head coaching job on his resume, and then roll the dice. That's where we are now.

Whew, I was thinking we'd get Nick Saban, thanks for this new perspective.

I agree he comes with a lot of questions. Just an intriguing name because of his ties to Hartford and NFL / Belichick background. To me he is someone worth interviewing if he expressed an interest in the job. He's one of the few guys we might be able to get that would generate national buzz. Certainly the tristate area would be watching.

you must have missed the posters who said anything other than a proven FBS winner would be unacceptable

Who gives a flying ef about “ties to Hartford”? Seriously? I don’t give a damn if the next HC has ever even heard of UConn before, as long as he can turn things around.

I'm just telling you why his name gets mentioned here. Hartford is his hometown.

I’m on the record as being a Harasymiak guy, but what are our options for coaches who run gimmick offenses (triple option, air raid, etc.)?

A gimmick could hide some of our deficiencies quickly.

A HS coach can teach the triple option. You just better know how to coach defense.

.-.
I tend to agree. Everyone should take a look at Coastal Carolina's offense (they finished ranked last year). Playing option ball with a speedy QB makes life so much easier for the offense. We saw it yesterday.
I’ve been watching some of Coastal Carolinas highlights today and man I’m starting to love that offense. Dave should take a serious look at that HC he has them playing some good exciting football.

Can't believe some of the names I'm hearing. They should hire Dave Campo, he's from CT. Better yet, hire DJ Hernandez. He played at UConn and being Aaron's brother would create a ton of buzz.
Who would you like to see take the job?

I don't see any current or recent FBS HC who's not on Viagra and Lipitor taking this job. And I'd want someone with actual HC experience and a bit of life left in them. So my list starts with Scotty Walden of Austin Peay. To me, he's exactly the mad scientist UConn needs to make games fun again and bring a breath of fresh air to Storrs. Only 30, his offenses are dynamite.

Others I'd consider in addition to Bob Chesney:
  • Brian Bohannon, Kennesaw St. (50)
  • Jay Hill, Weber St. (46)
  • Josh Conklin, Wofford (42)
  • Matt Entz, ND State (48)
  • Scott Abell, Davidson (51)
  • Bob Surace, Princeton (53)
  • Willie Simmons, Florida A&M (40)
  • Troy Taylor, Sacramento St. (53)
  • Bobby Hauck, Montana (57)

If we hire a defensive oriented HC, my next call would be to Ryan McCarthy at CCSU to become OC. I believe McCarthy only makes like $137K as HC there, so doubling his salary might get shake him loose.
Worse job in all college football with the only chance to be a winner would be to drop to a lesser division.

Stupid comment. None of those guys were successful NFL head coaches. Mangini took the Jets to the playoffs. Do you know how hard it is to take the Jets to the playoffs?

We're just spitballing here, nobody is signing contracts.

also, if we're talking Air Raid - Eric Mele

Longtime Mike Leach assistant. From NJ. He's 43 and has been coaching with Leach since 2012.

Who would you like to see take the job?
Someone who has a proven track record of winning wherever they've been and an offensive coach who coaches the spread.

Who do I not want to hire? Anyone who hasn't been a head coach in many years, anyone who gets hired because they have connections to UConn/the state of Connecticut, somebody who has never coached before, a defensive coach who hasn't proven they can run a high scoring offense in 2020.

He did a great job recruiting there as well.
He’s done a good job recruiting pretty much everywhere he’s been. I’m sure he’s on the top of everyone’s list. I believe Dave will contact him. Will he take the job who knows but he is one of the best candidate for the job.

Lots of names being bandied about. Will be interesting to see what actually transpires.
I would LOVE to see Lashlee back. If anyone can get him,it would be A.D.Dave , who originally brought him here in the first place.

Now for a choice totally off the wall & will NEVER happen: Tyler P.'s former coach at Avon Old Farms: Bill Mella. Coach Bill was a tight ends coach at Trinity. He replaced Jude Kelly at Southington (both of my boys played for him) & in his 3 years there took the Knights to two Class LL finals & a semifinal. He left for a stint at Wesleyan & then became Head Coach at Avon Old Farms so he could have increased family time with his kids. Watching him while he coached the Blue Knights, I saw all the traits we are looking for: Assessing & putting players in a position to succeed, monitoring their class work, great tactician on both offense & defense, excellent motivator.
I'm just using Coach Mella's qualities as an example of the type of Coach A.D. Dave should be looking for. Whoever he chooses has a lot of work to do to bring the Huskies back to respectability.

Thinking outside the box….Bobby Acosta
  • NJ guy
  • Air Raid — “basketball on grass” offense
  • Plenty of coaching/recruiting experience
  • Led IMG Academy to #1 ranking in 2020
  • Currently HC at Del Valle HS (TX)
