Who makes USA Roster for FIBA World Cup? (Sept. 22-Oct. 1)

Interesting, wonder if these are all injury related?

Elena Delle Donne, Allisha Gray, Myisha Hines-Allen and Arike Ogunbowale will no longer attend training camp in Las Vegas.

Well, we know that Arike missed 7-8 (?) games at the end of the season and then tried to come back in the last game against the Sun, but was clearly not ready to do so. Don't think I'm making too much of a stretch to think she's not quite ready yet.

Her Dallas teammate, Gray, was playing monster minutes in Arike's absence and I hadn't heard of any injury.

As for Hines-Allen, don't know what's happening. Her WNBA coach (Thibault) is an assistant for U.S.A. and she's got a great chance to (at least) make an impression. I'll have to take a look around town to see if she's here and/or how she's looking physically (Hines-Allen was born in raised where I live).

It's recently been announce Hines-Allen is undergoing surgery. (Later tweet corrects the surgery to be "partial patellar repair"

Thx for letting us know!

My Cable Channel menu has the time as 10 PM, Eastern not midnight

USAB better hope that Wilson, Plum, Gray, Loyd, and Stewie all decide to play, because if not, there is no way this current team will win.
Why wouldn't they?

Yes it is. Not sure how I saw it scheduled for midnight earlier today. My mistake.
The 8 am rebroadcast time is still right.
Yeah no problem, just didn't want anyone to miss it if they were looking for it tonight.

Will be repeated on NBATV once more Sunday night at 12:30.

Updated roster of everyone that's not in the WNBA finals.

9/21 is the first game in the tournament, and the WNBA finals goes through 9/20.
Looks like Plum, Gray, and A'ja won't make it.
The USA will have a hard time winning in Australia. Australia at home has to be the favorite to win it all.

So you cant have players come to the tournament in the late rounds when they really may be needed? The line up has to be set prior to game 1?

But even so, I would add Wilson and Gray to my roster and start the early games two players short until they can travel down.

On the CT side, are Thomas and Jonquel considerations?

I guess it depends on how long the series goes and how the players feel. If the series end in 3 or possibly even 4, those players could still be available along with Brionna Jones, Jackie Young and Alyssa Thomas. It'll be interesting, I honestly wouldn't blame any of the players in the finals for not going, I'm sure playing in that is draining enough.

Good question - are there rules in FIBA that would prevent late additions?

Factor in the travel and time difference. How quickly can they adjust to be effective?

Jonquel Jones is from the Bahamas but also has Bosnian Citizenship and plays for them. So, Jones is not in consideration.

Thomas possibly. Was invited to the Training in Vegas and was named to the 2022 Olympic Qualifying Team on Feb. 7, 2022. Interestingly, Thomas hasn't made a USA team since the 2012 3x3 game.

Depending on who actually plays this doesn't look like it will be an easy tournament for the US Team. Even if the WNBA finals participants wind up joining the team in time to play this unit is definitely one of transition.

Maybe the Americans need to not come out on top in a tournament or two to get the desire and drive back. When the 96 national team was assembled they not only had great talent but also a drive to win and play for each other. The legacy of players like Bird, DT, Catchings, Charles, Fowles has carried the WC and Olympics teams for several cycles but they are gone. Can Stewie, Aja, Loyd, Gray, Ionescu, Plum, and others take over and keep it going? I'd say yes, but this is a dangerous tournament for the US given the non existent window to get players there plus the sheer number of question marks and unproven players who will be forced to play some minutes.

Learned through this ESPN article that there is a 48 hour cut off point prior to the start of the tournament. If the finals go 5 games, I don't see late additions being possible.

"The Americans still have 18 players on their roster, including six who are playing in the WNBA Finals that begin Sunday. The final 12-player roster for the World Cup is due 48 hours before the start of play."

So, assuming they need to go to 5 games, I still think the best strategy is to put Aja and Gray on the list and play the early games with a reduced roster as needed.

You put A'ja, Plum, and Gray on the roster.
The first game against Belgium you have 9 players available, and hope you win.

As long as A'ja and Stewie are there just get to the finals, and you have a chance to win. Dolson may not be great, but a big body to set picks, can shoot, pass to A'ja, and Stewie.
You have enough guards, Gray, Loyd, Plum, Ionescu, Atkins.
If the rookie bigs can give you 35-40 minutes of quality play a game they should win.
In the knockout rounds A'ja and Stewie are playing 35+ unless it's a blowout.

To clarify, does this mean play while waiting for Gray and Wilson to arrive in Australia? I have no idea if FIBA allows for late arrivals for their tournaments.

From the link below:

Final rosters will be confirmed following the official Technical Meeting, which is set to take place on the eve of the event.

Rosters displayed on this page have been extracted from information made public by the relevant National Member Federations but do not necessarily correspond to the rosters that will play at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022.

After the bronze medal at Barcelona 1992, USA Basketball did a tremendous job of revamping the national team program under the leadership of Carol Callan.

Fourteen years would go by before the US would lose at a major international competition (the 2006 World Championships in Brazil).

That was 16 years ago now. The way things are looking, we may be due for a loss. Maybe it's not altogether unhealthy for international basketball if the US doesn't go undefeated for 50 years.

I cringe, however, when I think of the narratives that will be spun out of a US loss in Australia.

TBH it seems as if losing the World Cup vs Losing the olympics is miniscule . World cups are great to have but players seem to care more about the Olympic Gold. You never see highlights of how many World cups a player has won in the US versus how many gold medals they have won .

No doubt the Olympics is viewed as more prestigious. Same reason why USA Basketball bases its hiring and other major organizational decisions on the Olympic quadrennial.
