Just as their is a reason UConn is not in a P4 conference, there is a reason FSU is not in a p2. They just don't bring anything additional to the table IMO. They are not a required team in college football. We shouldn't treat them like they are Notre Dame, Oklahoma , Texas or Alabama .

Yeah. You are just way off here. I’ve lived in Florida for many years. Married a Gator. Her family is divided pretty evenly between the two schools. I’ve never heard anyone argue that FSU isn’t big time like Florida is. It’s just not a thing. Both are national powers and FSU produces HUGE ratings. It’s just the way it is. The only thing that’s holding them back is that they are in the ACC. For a long time, that was a good thing, but not anymore. They need to leave and they will have a place to go.

Step up where? The Mountaineers have been off the ACC invitation list since 1953, for much the same reason Memphis has: academics.

WVU places #220 in US News with an 88% accept rate. That's below Texas Tech, Kansas State, and every other Big 12 school. By contrast, 17 of the 18 ACC schools are in the Top 100.

Not entirely true... the Big 10 clearly cares about research/AAU status (and academic profile fits hand in hand) and while the ACC brought in Louisville community college they do care about academics to a very good degree.

They didn’t seem to care when they added Nebraska. They care about it, until they don’t. Which means they don’t.

And people talking about Ohio State and Illinois as if they are the Ivy League really need to get a grip.

In regards to the ACC: if it goes the way I think it will, beggars won’t be choosers. If they can snatch a school from the Big 12 and weaken them. Of course they will.

While I agree that WVU's academic stature will no longer be a drawback when the ACC starts looking to add membership, I don't place much credibility in that article, even if Sports Illustrated published it.

It was a pro WVU piece by someone whose role is to author pro WVU content.

There are others out there.

The makeup of the settlement is such that they are expecting to lose schools. The ACC is planning ahead.

Do you really think that if ACC Armageddon goes down that they won’t call a big state school in their own footprint. WVU would be a major coup for what is left of that conference.

They will be targeting WVU. You can bank on it.

All schools in the Big10 are or have been in the AAU so I'd say they definitely care about it.

Not sure why you bring up Ohio State and the Ivy League; you're twisting things.

I think you're way of thinking is wrong on this. The facts and data disagree with you. What school would go from the Big12 to the ACC? Why and when?

And it also used to be contiguous and now it’s not.

With the Super League all bets are off. If you think they are still limiting themselves to criteria like that then you have another thing coming.

Also, If five or whatever teams leave to the Super League from the ACC then the remaining ACC schools will be receiving hefty buyout packages. Nobody is going to turn that down to go play in the corn with the Big 12. They don’t want to pay a buyout or miss out on what is basically a golden parachute.

Not only that but they will be able to sweeten any offer to a Big 12 school like WVU and defray expensive exit fees. I don’t know why they would want Cincy or UCF.
 
Michigan State was not in the AAU at the time they were admitted to the B1G but became a member of AAU a few years later.

Nebraska is not an AAU member but was a member at the time they joined. They were voted out of AAU soon after and some B1G schools voted them out. Recently, Nebraska has expressed interest in rejoining the AAU and is going through some processes to try to make that happen. For example, their medical campus is now considered part of UNL, and it was not before. That move was needed to even have a shot at regaining AAU membership.

While joining AAU a few years ago, Notre Dame was traditionally not an AAU member and the B1G would have added them regardless if the opportunity presented itself.

If the ACC was smart, and, honestly, they’re not, they would have an invite ready for West Virginia 30 seconds after the B12 contract expires.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned in realignment, it’s that restraint is often proven fatal. The academics running these school will eventually learn that they’re in a gun fight.

Again, not relevant but let's play your game. Six ACC schools can now leave to play football in another conference. Will they/will it happen? Time will tell. FSU, Clemson, UNC just dictated terms to the rest of the ACC schools and it is now in their by-laws. I'd say they'd gladly leave the ACC, write the checks, and move on to greener pastures in a heartbeat once those doors open up.

If the majority of the Big 12 and ACC schools were smart, they would combine the strongest schools into a new conference and become a P3.

Right. 60 years ago. MSU does just shy of a billion dollars a year in research. They've always been a powerhouse in that arena. The AAU is a club largely driven by the Big10. They are the gatekeepers.

With Notre Dame and Miami just getting into the AAU, it makes you go hmmmm. The last 6 Big10 additions were/are all AAU members. Clearly, it means A LOT to Big10 presidents.

I don't see a clear take on why on earth, WVU would risk their current situation for what amounts to a lateral move AT BEST, to the ACC. At worst, they leave a meh (but floating) ship (B12), to a fast sinking ship (ACC) - what's in it for them?

The best of the Big XII and ACC if possiible eould be very solid but they just can't go do that.

The WVU situation is intriguing when the wheels on the ACC cart start to fly off. In a vacuum I like the Big XII better. The conference could go after Pitt, VPI, NC State, Ga Tech... WVU has not fared well though so if the ACC can hold together, it may be the best place for WVU.

Well, now the ACC schools can with their recent 6 school/football-only exit hatch. Big12 schools will have to figure out their way if they really wanted this; not sure they do.

There are some unhappy rumblings from FSU and Clemson boosters about the possibility of the schools "staying the course" in the ACC...

The settlement got most of what they wanted, a defining of the GOR including the actual holding of media rights by the conference, an ability to leave before 2036 with a less draconian Exit Fee and with the rights intact, and no more being outvoted on conference decisions. And revenue splits based 75% on football viewership over a rolling five years.

While UNC seems to be making noise about leaving, Clemson and FSU have been conspicuously quiet and making nice with Phillips.

This note from Jim Phillips ACC Media Day began the grumbling...

9:52 -- On the ACC settlement with FSU and Clemson. Reporter says FSU and Clemson got most of what they wanted. But how is he sure they won't still leave? He says FSU and Clemson told them they still want to be in the ACC. "And I believe them." Says he feels stronger about the ACC's strength over the last 5 months, thanks to the settlement, than he has in his tenure.
 
I love politicians and Conference Commissioners....I wish that he had said "they told me that they still want to be in the ACC but I don't believe them."

I seem to recall that Jim categorized the lawsuit as being very damaging to the league. A year later it has provided security and innovation.
