I agree. The banner is not a claim of a championship because there was no championship. Who knows what would have happened in the tournament? Nobody. Being number one at the end of the season - even when undefeated - does not mean you will win the championship or get to play in the championship gameSouth Carolina and Oregon were basically 1a and 1b. In my mind, if the NCAA tournament had occurred 2020 those two teams would have faced each other in the title game and it's basically a coin toss on the winner. But that didn't happen so we only have the regular season to go off of and the majority thought South Carolina was the better team, thus the #1 ranking in almost every poll.
I do not believe most South Carolina fans care one way or another about the #1 banner. The only reason I care, is that it meant something to the players who put a lot of time and effort into getting that #1 ranking that they had some visible record of their accomplishments in the absence of the NCAA tournament. And when they come back to the arena they can be reminded of their achievement during a very trying year.
But we always honor that ten for what they did accomplish before the rug was swept out from under their feet.
