Week 7 - Dec 16 to 22

Wow!

What a titanic clash of countervailing paranormal forces: The powerful Boneyard jinx was summoned by some midgame commenters, which allowed Duke to narrow the gap. But in the end that was no match for the accumulated karma of all those years of @triaddukefan bashing South Florida ... :p

USF is a well coached team that isn’t intimidated by highly ranked programs. They have enough good talent that any team that looks at their record and doesn’t take them seriously risks losing the game. Jose Fernandez’s teams pull off an upset often enough that opponents should take note

The ESPN hype from next door to UConn is somewhat disturbing for the Southern Cal vs UConn game today, "The greatest show on court: Paige Bueckers vs. JuJu Watkins".

Not a mention that both teams lost to Notre Dame and Hidalgo and Miles etc. If they call them generational talents what does that make those who defeated both of them? Media hype that ignores reality drive me crazy. They could have said good things without using words implying perfection.

But why should I expect honesty from today's media in general and a failing sports network in particular.

TONIGHT ON ESPN:

“ Come watch some pretty good players!!!! Of course neither of them are Hannah H, who isn’t playing, but you know eh.”

Yes it’s amazing they didn’t use that in their marketing.

Been trashing South Florida for at least the past 8 years.... now look at what happened

Starting my boycott of beef right now

Lemme log off and go put some coal in some stockings :(

.-.
I had to look at USF's schedule. Really tough so far. They are 7-1 at home. Losses to UConn, Vandy, Louisville, Mississippi St., TCU and South Carolina. Some of those games were close. UConn and TCU really thumped them though. Up until today no noteworthy wins.

The game is on Fox.

I'll be looking to see if ESPN will be using Hidalgo mentions when marketing games involving TCU or Utah. We wouldn't want to ignore reality.

Domers complaining about marketing hype is rich.

USF came in ranked #8 in strength of schedule per NET, but yeah, only Quad 4 wins prior to today.

The losses to Louisville and MSU were the only truly close ones. They somehow kept the deficit respectable playing at SC, unlike TCU who got completely blown out by SC in Fort Worth.

In fairness to Duke, I give their coach credit for not hiding out at home and for going on the road to face non-cupcake non-p4 teams like South Dakota State and South Florida. Most coaches of the top p4 programs adamantly refuse to sign home-and-homes with such teams.

1 min till tip. Coach Molly Miller is sporting a fashionable (black and white) holiday sweater.

The Owls of FAU defeated Razorback nemesis 68-52 in the third place game.

In a repeat of the first 2 games of the Holiday tournament GCU's opponent scores first. The Eagles of Georgia Southern defeated Arkansas Razorback killer Wright State 88-80 on Friday

So the first quarter ends 16-11 with the Lopes leading.

The Eagles have a player in sophomore center Paris Gaines. Also, Eagles coach Hana Haden has coached up her squad. Haden is an up and coming coach and has taken a team to the big dance one more time than the current ASU coach. Haden is the type of coach with both potential and demonstrated success that a program like ......ASU might consider

On the court at the second quarter media time out GCU 24 - Hana Haden's Eagles 13.

You mean like 14-0 LSU? 9-0 at home 4-0 on neutral sites and the only true road game was against Massey rated #205 IL Chicago? LSU won 91-73 with 3 of their 5 starters playing 35+ minutes.

.-.
Lopes open second half on a 12-0 run to run Georgia Southern out of the Arena.

But Coach Hana Haden is coaching her team up. Haden who began her head coaching career, a la Pat Summit, at aged 23 when she became a head coach at the age of 23 at Harris-Stowe State University, an NAIA school in St. Louis. Haden led the Hornets to back-to-back 19-win seasons, the first consecutive winning seasons in 29 years for the school.

Prior to taking the reins of the Eagles:

She led Georgia Southwestern State to a 29-4 overall record and a 16-2 mark in the Peach Belt Conference. The 'Canes won the Peach Belt tournament title and the NCAA Southeast Region crown, earning the program's first NCAA Division II Elite Eight berth. Haden led the 'Canes to a second straight Peach Belt title and a school record for wins in a season. She is a four-time honoree on the WBCA's Thirty Under 30 Coaches list as well.

Wow. BYU was struggling mightily, couldn't hit anything, then all of a sudden went on a 14-0 run in a few minutes to take a 30-25 halftime lead against Arizona. Delaney Gibb not surprisingly leading the way.

If wins are the determining factor then Didn't Haley Van Lith beat Hidalgo and Miles, along with some Utah players? I'm shocked you missed those games.

Some of the big east results today surprised me.

I didn’t expect Butler to get destroyed by a bad DePaul team. And Saint John’s losing to Villanova is also a result I didn’t expect.

Nobody wants to win this Arizona-BYU game. Cougs miss a layup to tie. Arizona misses 2 FTs to ice it. BYU can't even inbound the ball and turns it over. Arizona finally prevails 57-53. Cunningham was too much for the Cougs. Gibb had 23 but missed that one that should've sent it to OT.

Oh oh oh, that's my cue.

(Checks script) "There are no nights off in the <insert conference name> Big East! Anyone can win on any given night! You better bring your A game or you're going home with an L !"

:D

Oklahoma St. was killing Iowa St., then Cyclones came roaring back to tie it. Now the Pokes pulling away again.

Is Iowa St. one of the more disappointing teams in the country so far? That Super Soph class plus an experienced PG like Ryan. Will fall to 9-5 if they lose today, with their best win against Drake or Middle Tennessee? There's time to add to the resume but I expected more from them.

That was crazy, Okie St. played keep away for 20 seconds while Iowa St. was trying desperately to foul and stop the clock.

Oh by the way OSU Coach Hoyt had her first baby about a week and a half ago.

81-75 final.

In Arizona it appears all proceeding according to expectations.

GCU - Lopes take care of business in their Holiday tournament winning big over Georgia Southern.

kitties wanted to lose less than the Cougs, but a win on the road is a win on the road

ASU - oy. Well after scoring 25 points in the first quarter at Utah things revert to normal, Utes lead at the half 48-38. If the score holds Adair stays on schedule to lead the Devils to a third consecutive 20 loss season. Is it possible that the Devils iron out their "issues" at half and rally..................

While watching the Rebs dispatch UC Riverside I still can't help but wonder what was the story on the Nicole Powell departure.

I still wonder why she left GCU for UCR. Was that even a lateral move?

Anyway Riverside has not the best history. The hole stink w/ Powell's predecessor and firing an assistant coach who was actually being supportive of the players.

NO....

The "culture" the "coaching" the "catastrophe" that is ASU WBB was illustrated twice in the second half - by Ice Brown.

With 5 minutes gone in the third quarter, Ice goes 1 on 4 in the paint (with 3 open shooters) and gets called for the offensive foul.

With 4 minutes left in the game, 45 feet from the hoop, Ice commits her 5th foul (frustration)

Oy, it is soooooooooooooo painful. Adair and her squad hold Utah to 102 points.

The Sun Devils

What was also painful was the positive spin the Utah announcers placed on the Delaware coach:

This is a teaching moment (Yah think?)

7 new transfers into Tempe (Why?, Why? Why can't she keep or develop players?)

Lots of improvement in the second half? (WTF - ASU gives up 48 in the first half and 54 in the second - IMPROVEMENT?!?!?!)

Just a matter of cleaning up some details (NO, ITS NOT)

There's a lot to like with this team. (If you are a masochist)

You have got to respect the effort. (Are they out of their minds?)

ASU fans have to be excited about this team. (Is it me or is this psychotic?)

ASU can hold their head up. (What?)

My favorite

ASU made some nice defensive adjustments in the second half. (OMG, OMG, OMG)

I feel like I'm privy to the inside your fan mind working through some tough stuff. Is Adair your Manticore?

Yeah, I've found people can be very complimentary of a coach they hope is retained by a frequent opponent, when it is pretty obvious a change needs to be made.

There was more than 1 team letting a big lead get away tonight. West Virginia was cruising @ Colorado...then got outscored 25-9 in Q4. Buffs take a 65-60 win.

Butler is missing its best player, grad student Caroline Strande (14 ppg) who went down in the first half of the Wisconcin game, which they eventually lost in double OT. She hasn't played since, and it's starting to look like they're not going to be very good without her. Not sure of her injury, but they sure do need her back.
