No ASU players in double figures. Harding (nee Johnson) led BYU w/ 25.

BYU is usually solid, and they brought back most of their team from last year.

However they have really struggled against Pac 12 teams for years. Probably play 3-4 per year, and I think this is only their 2nd win in the last 5 years or so.

I thought ASU might bounce back from last year. Now I'm thinking not so much.

I was thinking about the thread dealing with ranking of pac-12 coaches as I suffered through the BYU ASU game. CTT has had a long successful career with a philosophy of defense first with half court offense. Last year was an anomaly given covid and other disruptions. However this year it certainly appears that the players she selected are not fully compatible with her philosophy.

Scoring trend this year

So the disaster that was ASU offense last year looks like it may be the same or even worse.

Defense trend

The Lady Devils looked tired. Very tired in the second half of the OT loss to Minnesota and very tired throughout the second half of today's game.

Taya Hanson the returning 3-point shooter has received significant defensive attention often double teamed and has not been able to respond.

The only bright spot is grad transfer from Rutgers Giles. She plays with tremendous energy and is a very strong defensive presence and rebounder. Unfortunately she has a tendency to try to put the ball on the floor and has become a bit of a turnover machine.

I can't think of a time when I've been less optimistic at this stage of the season. In today's game at one point BYU had two freshman guards on the court and they actually extended their lead.

My pain may continue tonight as the Lady Lumberjacks try to score their first win of the season at home against UNLV with a 6pm MST tip. Only on ESPN+

Yeah, I'm a little wary of ASU given their all time defensive performances in the past, but they just don't seem the same as usual this year.

The interesting statistic of note that I've heard this evening is that with Haley Jones' triple double, the Pac-12 has had a player produce a triple double in each of the past 11 seasons including this season. That's supposedly the longest active streak among all conferences.

Out of curiosity, I went back and found who did it each year. In parenthesis is the number of triple doubles they had that year. While triple doubles don't necessarily equate to championships, it's still a remarkable feat for a conference to continually have them.

No clue. Zia and Russell both got a chance too. LA definitely adds an interesting dimension. She was towering over the PG on defense. The linked blocked shot highlight on ESPN happened while she was defending the opposing PG.

Just got back from the game. The Jacks rained threes 7 of 15. Point guard Reagan Schenck had 11 assists and the team looked really strong on both sides of the court.

It's always really curious to me when teams start against tougher competition. On the one hand, I think that the tough games early can raise the level of the team so that when they play teams of the same caliber they're coming out guns blazing. The flip side of that can be that the team loses confidence early. There's a fine line to walk with scheduling.
