How about a different perspective? First, we know Geno is not happy about the short bench. Second, it has been stated for years that practice is much harder than a game. Third, Geno loves to raise the bar and challenge the players.
Geno says to the players --YOU CAN play 40 minutes if necessary and we can win. You can push through and find a new level in the thick of high level competition. This opportunity presented itself and Geno is using it as a "lesson" on what can be accomplished if needed in March.
If Geno wanted the playesr to get some rest he would space all his timeouts for a break. And he would sub whenever the team was ahead by 20 or more. But he doesn't.
