Val Ackerman

That may be true, I have no idea. Or maybe the media don't think her actions are newsworthy. Give an example of what she should be doing that would make a difference. Maybe she should have strenuously objected. Maybe she understands the Big East's situation and squawking about it will only make the conference look weaker. I don't know.

“Based on the numbers we have reviewed, the liability of the 22 non-FBS conferences under the proposed formula appears disproportionately high, particularly because the primary beneficiaries of the NIL ‘back pay’ amounts are expected to be FBS football players,” Ackerman wrote. “I have voiced the Big East's strong objections to the proposed damages framework through recent emails to [NCAA president] Charlie Baker and his counsel and through comments during commissioner calls over the past two weeks.”

"While Ackerman and other non-FBS leaders plan to fight for a change in the formula, she is “unclear how much time or leverage” they have in such a battle with the leading defendants in the case: the high-revenue generating football powers in the Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, ACC and remaining and former members of the Pac-12."

For starters. She should simply make an appearance instead of making $1.75M a year for reading Eat, Pray, Love on a beach somewhere.

Baby steps.

Glad you typed all that Detective.

It's so hard to say for sure, but if you pressed me to take a wild guess I'd say.... um, oh, I don't know, maaaybe because there are no football rights associated with it?

And maybe they just weren’t so good. I think this has been litigated ad nauseum on this site. Back to the thread that any commish has little leverage - other than to object strenuously and “be visable” - in a suit or pantsuit or a tuxedo tee shirt.
Cuz it says your’re serious, but you like to party too.

There’s definitely a level of complacency in her behavior that is no longer good for the conference. At minimum, she needs to be out there pimping the strength of the Big East as a major basketball conference.
Was complacency good for the conference at one point?

One more thing. Kolumbo knows how to work smarter, not harder. <Ctrl C> and <Ctrl V> ;)

Poorly worded, but there was a time where we just needed to wait for some decisions to come down. That time is over and she should be out talking up Big East basketball.

She should do a lot of interviews and publicize that schools like UConn will be paying top dollar. Control the narrative that as far as basketball goes, the Big East is still a major conference. It might not work, but you have to do it. Many casual sports fans will assume that the Big East isn’t competing with the P4 in terms of money.

Be careful proclaiming five BE programs at that high of a level. We absolutely qualify and Nova (I imagine they are the program you are saying bottomed out) still belongs in that discussion as very few can claim ever having a decade to match Nova's last ten years, even with the Neptune years included.

From there, Creighton and Marquette are perhaps borderline very good. A bit more tournament success would be needed to approach excellent. If you have St John's as the fifth, their current situation gets their very recent teams in the conversation, but that is an entirely different conversation than what they are as a program.
I would put St John’s at the same level as SMU with Larry Brown.
He gave an immediate boost to a nominal BB program in the tail end of his career.
Just like SMU after he left, St John’s will be in a spiral after Pitino leaves.
Neither have built a legacy program that withstood their inevitable departure in the sunset of their coaching careers.

Even though they are struggling, Georgetown with the right coach could get very good very quickly.
The roots are there. They would be the fifth ‘program’, although not the 5th best team currently

Yep. Try to manage the narrative as best you can.

The TV deal is good? What are you smoking?
Like I said, look at the regular season ratings. Who would/should pay more for BE basketball? But yeah, if our lazy commish got off her ass and stopped shopping for pantsuits, it would move UConn Athletics’ bottom line in a meaningful way. That would be the argument of the haters. Or she’s just an easy target for frustration with being in conference and financial limbo, especially with FB. I think we’re kicking ass regardless. Nobody knows or controls the future - except Greg Sankey.

See. You learn something everyday. Now you are getting it.

Even Sankey. He will be known as the C Michael Armstrong of college athletics

I really don't see what people expect. Should she be asking to be interviewed? Appear like a used car salesman desperately pushing the Big East? I suppose if she is actually turning down interviews or meetings that would be a problem. Everyone that matters knows what every conference and every program brings to the table. Casual sports fans don't care about the financial, they want to watch sports. UConn has a Power level athletic budget and the people that matter don't seem to care. If she is guilty of being too passive, maybe UConn's better off for it, not constantly sending the message that UConn is a basketball school linked to DePaul and Butler.

Yes. That’s actually one major way that people get interviewed. They offer themselves up for interviews. Whether it’s tv or podcasts, they need and want content. Free content is even better.

It’s just like when you see a news story on a local business. They usually asked to be interviewed, written about etc. They are seeking publicity. My company makes press releases. We then use connections to get them in the paper. The perception is always that I got news coverage because I am important or do a good job. The truth is, I asked for it. It still impresses people that know me. It’s marketing.

The Big 12 Commissioner, Yormark, seems to think there is untapped value in college basketball. Ackerman has a conference in major markets with the best men's conference tournament at MSG, and she seems to be coasting and not innovating. Honestly, what has she done to move the Big East forward? Here's an idea for Val. Have each of the Big East schools upgrade their out of conference schedules to improve the Big East's TV ratings. It's time for a new visionary Commissioner to help the Big East reach it's full potential.

Maybe. Meanwhile I'm quite sure the Power conference commissioners are turning down interviews and not asking for any. Someone opening a new restaurant? Sure, they have to pound the pavement to get the word out. A conference commissioner asking for interviews? You have got to be kidding me. You answered your own question as to why the Big East may be shunned like an Amish boy with a nipple ring (Miller). It's almost embarrassing that you are suggesting Val go begging for interviews. If they aren't asking Val for interviews, it's not because her card fell out of their rolodexes (old reference).

It's very normal for entities and organizations to create their own publicity. Giving interviews are part of that.

From reading the text above it sounds like you think the purpose of ann interview was just so Val could get attention or something? It is the purpose would be to advance a specific narrative. Maybe that narrative would be this is how the big east plans to participate in the revenue sharing era. Maybe it would be that's a conference is committed to putting out the best athletic product out there. Maybe it's just a note that the big east has had more championships over the last five years than any other conference, but something. But being silent when major things are happening in college athletics, reinforces the impression that the big east is not a serious participant in college athletics.

The article I posted in post #23 is from May 19, not too long ago. I absolutely have no idea what Val's calendar looks like or how frequently she is speaking with people. Generally speaking, the market is efficient in taking care of things. Things worth reporting are reported and read. Maybe she has 10 meetings a day and the editors decide it's not news worthy. We read about Greg Sankey, Tony Petitti, Brett Yormark, and Jim Phillips almost daily because. Members of those conferences probably have no idea at all who Val Ackerman is. Heck, just google Big East and see what kind of news items you come up with compared to the Power conferences. 1. Are Gonzaga and the Big East the big winners in revenue sharing? 2. Big East names St. John's President Rev. Brian......from a week ago.

Lol, so now instead of Val, doing interviews being equivalent to her Attention seeking as she desperately opens a new restaurant, it's now that she's just too busy. OK. Now I see.

Who the what the...?

I said she could be busy giving interviews but maybe they are not considered newsworthy enough to report.

She has gotten far and away the best TV deal for any conference not playing FB. Better in fact than some conferences that play FBS football. No other school in the conference seems unhappy about the job Val has done. No other school in the conference plays FBS football. Maybe our frustrations should be toward our leadership, that can't get us into a better conference where we fit better, but they always get the "what else can they do," pass.

You must have missed it. She was booed mercilessly at the BET.

There are loads of frustrations around the conference with her. She’s an absentee landlord.

I'll take your word for it.

Hard to do better than the best contract for a non FB playing conference and better than lower level FBS conferences. People were throwing out figures of 12, 13 million a year for where the BE contract was gonna come in on this board. In that context, she "under delivered". Right now the BE is UConn. Go back a bit and Nova was "it" school. Marquette and Creighton are nice but they don't move the needle much. The proof really is in the BE's ratings compared to the power conferences.

If the school presidents are happy with her, does it matter that fans boo at MSG?
