USC and UCLA to the BIG Ten

Unless you're a handful of southern teams, no one really has a chance to win it. The B1G has one natty in the last couple of decades. We may suck at football, but even we have more national championships in sports people care about than the B1G in that time frame.

It’s 8.75 hours to fly commercially to Rutgers, according to the email.

LA to Newark is 5 1/2 hours. I think the 8.75 hours is including the time change, though the article expressly says it does not.
I'm thinking it is total travel time from campus-to-campus, including transit to and from airports as well as time allotted for arrival prior to the flight.

Probably, which I actually think is more relevant than flight time, but that’s not what the article says. It says “8.75 hours to fly commercially” and then later in the article, it says that that doesn’t include dry time from the airport.

I'm really intrigued with the AZ schools. What is the best-case scenario for them, or what would you want if you were a fan? Both have very good athletic departments. $1.3 billion endowments. Huge enrollments. Arizona is AAU and losing its best basketball rival. Don't get me wrong, I'm not shedding any tears. I don't see anything written about them outside of the Big 12 but here are two heavy weights whose nearest conference mate is going to be SDSU. Could one go B1G and one go SEC? If not, it seems they'd both be better off in the B1g 12 with the Kansases and Texas schools.

Said this awhile ago. It just makes financial sense to have USC/UCLA permanent games against one of the Big 3. I think OSU is a given and probably PSU for the other, but Michigan wouldn’t surprise me either.

I posted the following in the B12 Expansion thread yesterday, don‘t know how to link a post in another thread, duh…

…Travel is no longer a concern, conferences are coast to coast and will go all 4 corners. <start joke> Open up the equivalent of UConn Stamford in Dallas and place the baseball team there, all classes virtual, play in Frisco as weather allows. Build guest quarters for traveling Olympic teams. wtfn <end joke>…

I added ‘joke’ to avoid being shredded by the board. Change is happening quickly, especially for those schools flush with cash. They can also open a graduate center there to generate other income. We have to act now.

That travel still has to be paid for, both in cash, and in wear and tear on the coaches and the student athletes.

USC and UCLA will have more than enough money to pay for charter flights for all sports. Game at Penn State? Charter from LA to the University Park Airport in State College, PA. No airport delays. No driving an hour plus to campus after leaving the airport.

Not sure other conferences will have the cashflow to do something like this, outside of the SEC.

What would that be about a 4 1/2 hour flight LA to Newark is 5 1/4 hours. Figure another 40 minutes to get to Rutgers.

I don’t know, seems less than ideal to me

When you factor in commercial flight delays from the major airlines and the drive from the commercial airport to the university campus, all of a sudden a direct charter flight from LA to a local airport near a B1G university isn’t that much longer.

Four hours and 39 minutes wheels up to wheels down to Pittsburgh. State college would be a little bit longer. But even if it were only four hours in 39 minutes it’s still four hours and 39 minutes on a plane. Or five hours and 15 minutes if you’re going to Rutgers… plus travel time to New Brunswick. Flying across the country takes time.

May not be ideal, but it’s the new normal. Omaha is not an easy trip. As it stands now UConn flies to at least 6 opponents. Once you are in the plane is 4 hrs that much worse than 2.5? Once you land expenses and experience is the same.

Well, it’s 4.65 not 4 and ours 4.65 x2 because you have to get back. It’s cumulative and draining.

Some of the B1G schools have their own airports that are practically on campus, so in and out for the teams is easy. Penn State has its own airport and it's right next door to the football stadium IIRC. Perhaps other B1G schools have a similar set up with such easy access so flying is not that big of a deal.

Not a ton of flights in and out of The SC Airport. It's possible that USC/UCLA could fly charter in for football, but it's highly unlikely that these schools will absorb that cost for Olympic Sports. My guess is that they will fly commercial into Harrisburg and bus to University Park. If they are doing a Friday through Sunday they could play at PSU on Friday, bus to Rutgers on Saturday and fly out of Newark on Sunday. Its not ideal, but teams from the Midwest are already doing something similar.

they would probably use burbank

SC= State College. Not sure if there are direct commercial flights from LA or Burbank to SC. There may be, but it's more likely that they would fly in elsewhere and then bus to campus.
