USA Basketball 3x3

Just watched it. Dolson really was very effective with her pick and rolls. Grey was hitting both inside and outside today and Plum heated up late to finish it off. Battle of the Dallas Wings goes to Alisha G. and the USA.

Plum had some world class drives at the end. Can US and France who are the 2 best teams it appears meet in the finals? Same side of the bracket?

By the way, the organ music on the last shot was hilarious. :D

USA finishes first in Pool A

They play the 2nd place team of Pool C, in the quarters, which is either Estonia, Hungary or Belarus.
If USA wins that game, they play the winner of D1 vs B2 which are Spain vs Australia for the semi finals.
A win in the semis is an auto qualifier for the Olympics.

Who are the coaches for this team? Do they ever appear on camera? It looks like the girls make their own substitutions. What are the rules on subs?

Kara Lawson is the head coach.
Coaches sit in a box left or right behind the basket. I dont know if they hand or verbal signal changes of players or plays.
They dont come on court for time outs either.

Tane from the USAB page

Art. 10 Substitutions

Substitutions can be done by any team when the ball becomes dead, prior to the check-ball. The substitute can enter the game after his teammate steps off the court and establishes a physical contact with him. Substitutions can only take place behind the end line opposite the basket and substitutions require no action from the referees or table officials.

USA seemed to have a regular rotation and it seemed to happen at every dead ball. Good way to keep the players as fresh as possible in that high speed game.

Interesting that the USA men lost their last game 20-16 to Belgium but apparently, they needed 16 points to win a tie breaker and the just eeked into the Quarters getting their 16th point with about 30 seconds left.

The 16 points was to finish as the #1 in pool play, they had a margin of a few more points to the #3 team - they finished tied in wins, tied in points at 80 with #2 in pool but had won the head to head. Belgium ended with 77 points with 3 wins. If that Belgium game score was 22-16 then they would have needed all 16 points, since it was 20-16 they had a two point margin into the quarters.

Thanks for the clarification.

It is weird to me that total points is the tie breaker instead of point differential.

Dolson seems unstoppable. Plum is great on offense but her defense sucks. Katie Lou’s defense is great. Should really help her in WNBA. Gray doing a good job.

Stef has gotta be MVP ... nobody matches up with her. As the announcer might have said it, Stef and Lou have been gangstas around the net.

A big fan of our Storm’s KLS. She played well but hasn’t been shooting particularly well. Dolson is strong and unstoppable down low and Alisha is so far the MVP of the team. Plum is finally coming alive on day 4 of the competition with some aggressive attack to the hoop, shot well and had a beautiful behind her back pass to KLS who converted. Dolson is so strong, can dribble and back her defender towards the basket for layups. So far, Toure of France seems to be a clear formidable opponent of team USA.

It so much talented players that didn’t make the W that should be playing in this 3 on 3 tournament it shouldn’t be allowed for WNBA players to play in these games

Nah. An Olympic qualifying tournament with USA Basketball isn’t where you get your participation trophy — even if it is 3x3. Glad they sent a team that they knew would not only play well together, but were just on the cusp of being included in the 5x5 team.

Beat Belarus easy 21-10. They can play better than that, and will have to in next round

Semi will be vs Australia or Spain. We want to win that game. If we lose it would be a game vs Japan or France, which IMO is a tougher game than Spain or Aussies.

Spain bloodied but still win
Australia had a gimme layup to tie it up late and pooped. Spain's post has a bit of Dolson in her. Shoulld be an interesting matchup

By the way, US Men just went down to the Netherlands 21-16. 2 pt sharpshooters overwhelmed US size inside.

Other than with her back to the basket I dont think the Spain post dribbled the ball.

But she did a few behind the back passes (and good ones)

I continue to be impressed by Lou’s defense. The biggest weakness on Team USA is Plum’s defense (her offense is outstanding) but too many times her opponent slips by her for an easy layup. Not sure how to fix that, as you can’t pull another player to pick up her woman. When The UConn duo are on the floor at the same time Team USA is unstoppable.

Lou facing Spain in the Semi's is interesting since she took over their League this year. I wonder if there are some close friendships or if some of them played against Lou ?
