3x3 is a ton more physical and is a high pace game. At the end of the France game the players (especially France) were gassed. I loved the announcer. He was funny, made great comments, and really got the feel of the game. The closed caption reads of what he said were often even more entertaining :D

Totally agree.

Anyone know the Olympic qualifiers out of this tournament - how many teams?

The top 4 teams in the FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking in the women’s category (Russian Olympic Committee, China, Mongolia and Romania) earned a trip to Japan, where 3x3 will make its first appearance at the Olympics.

3 teams from this tournament make it, plus one team from a tournament next week--see the link for details

Interesting...Mongolia? Romania? not exactly known for basketball

Stef looked good in both games today in the win against Indonesia and France (ranked no.1 in the world). Her size is a big advantage and able to bulldoze especially against smaller opponents. 3X3 is so different, fast and physical. Dolson and Gray are definitely team USA best players on the team. With the physicality of the game, Lou and Plum are not as effective but with more games and improvement on the chemistry and understanding of the 3X3 dynamics, team USA will be hard to beat.

Lou plays very good defense and hit the biggest "2pt" shot of the France game (to go up 19-15) and Plum more than holds her own. But got to love how Stef finishes every close shot with either hand. Invaluable

It is a good combination of strengths with the four players - they all pass really well and are good cutting and setting screens. Defensively they are all playing well - Stef and Lou using their height. And I think they are getting better with each game they play, fewer fouls, quicker defensive pick-ups, and better spacing on offense.

It is a strange set up for USA since we do not have a standing team - the other countries are more experienced with teams that have been together for much longer and playing many more competitions. Not dissimilar to the NT 5X5 situation with USA putting together their team in a hurry before each WC/Olympics

Just watched it. Dolson really was very effective with her pick and rolls. Grey was hitting both inside and outside today and Plum heated up late to finish it off. Battle of the Dallas Wings goes to Alisha G. and the USA.

Plum had some world class drives at the end. Can US and France who are the 2 best teams it appears meet in the finals? Same side of the bracket?

By the way, the organ music on the last shot was hilarious. :D

USA finishes first in Pool A

They play the 2nd place team of Pool C, in the quarters, which is either Estonia, Hungary or Belarus.
If USA wins that game, they play the winner of D1 vs B2 which are Spain vs Australia for the semi finals.
A win in the semis is an auto qualifier for the Olympics.

Who are the coaches for this team? Do they ever appear on camera? It looks like the girls make their own substitutions. What are the rules on subs?

Kara Lawson is the head coach.
Coaches sit in a box left or right behind the basket. I dont know if they hand or verbal signal changes of players or plays.
They dont come on court for time outs either.

Tane from the USAB page

Art. 10 Substitutions

Substitutions can be done by any team when the ball becomes dead, prior to the check-ball. The substitute can enter the game after his teammate steps off the court and establishes a physical contact with him. Substitutions can only take place behind the end line opposite the basket and substitutions require no action from the referees or table officials.

USA seemed to have a regular rotation and it seemed to happen at every dead ball. Good way to keep the players as fresh as possible in that high speed game.

Interesting that the USA men lost their last game 20-16 to Belgium but apparently, they needed 16 points to win a tie breaker and the just eeked into the Quarters getting their 16th point with about 30 seconds left.

The 16 points was to finish as the #1 in pool play, they had a margin of a few more points to the #3 team - they finished tied in wins, tied in points at 80 with #2 in pool but had won the head to head. Belgium ended with 77 points with 3 wins. If that Belgium game score was 22-16 then they would have needed all 16 points, since it was 20-16 they had a two point margin into the quarters.

Thanks for the clarification.

It is weird to me that total points is the tie breaker instead of point differential.

Dolson seems unstoppable. Plum is great on offense but her defense sucks. Katie Lou’s defense is great. Should really help her in WNBA. Gray doing a good job.
