My rant...

...it is insanity to think that with 133 teams spread on a Bell Curve of strength that the bottom half of that curve competes with the top quartile...

...Akron and Alabama both purport to play for the same prize...as do Marshall and Michigan..
...For gawd's sake, Ohio State is 18-0 vs the MAC since 2000...in what universe are they competitors ? Michigan is 21-1

..Split up FBS...133 teams competing for the same championship is a fiction...

Trivia...So far in 2023, a team favored by 7 points has won 88% of the time. Teams favored by 10 points won 92.5% of the time. Which tracks the ten year history.
 
UMass does not have to worry about having to leave the BE. Nonetheless , they need to drop down to FCS. If BCU can’t win in the ACC and we can’t even get an invite let alone win a game, what chance does UMass have at the FBS level???

Agreed on the $, agreed about W's. However, you are who you associate with. There is no clear path to the promised land, and being in the MAC until we win our way out might be the long way around.

It has been stated over and over that the commitment($) by the State, University and Athletic Dept will change everything. $ for an appropriate staff, $ to retain talent(Carter et al), $ to recruit portals and key HS kids.

There are some sharp FB folks on here that have pointed out what the right 5 or 6 kids really might have made a difference this year. How would you feel if we had another .500 year? It appears as though the bottom is coming up fast, when we hit it, a REAL decision has to be made from the top(State) down whether FB means enough to embark on a 10 year(minimum) plan.

The Presidents Blue Ribbon Commission on Athletics was formed in the late 80's, prompted by Jim and Geno pointing out(diplomatically I'm sure) what we didn't have and didn't do that Georgetown, St Johns and Villanova did. A set of recommendations was published and acted on. That blueprint led to facility help and National Hoops Champs in '95(W) and '99(M).

Obviously the focus was Hoops first as we were still IAA in FB. Look at how long it took to get to the top, basically from 1990 to 2000 for Sports that have 5 players competing at a time. 1997 saw the decision to upgrade FB to IA(probably 3-5 years too late and shortsighted about the Stadium on campus).

If DB, FB Alums and Jim Mora can sell the commitment to the State and University, how long does that plan take to come to fruition? 10 years minimum, probably 15?? Is anyone willing to make that commitment?

You have it backwards. Our issue has nothing to do with the funding for the program from the State or University. We can be very competitive with that. Just look at the teams that whooped up on us this year so far. It has everything to do with the funding from the Donors. The question is, can Mora, DB, and the University sell the FB Alums and Donors on the commitment?

A full MAC membership makes a lot of sense for UMASS. They could probably emerge as the top basketball program in that league like Buffalo was under Hurley and Oats.

I would love to see UConn get a football only invite when UMASS gets in.

It's a great idea. Believe the MAC frowned on FB only, but if we went all sports an UConn FB only would make some sense. Then to keep an old rival, perhaps URI could build their facilities up. Then when UConn goes to the P4 promise land, URI could step in.

We wouldn't leave the BE for all-sports unless it was to a P2/3/4/5 conference. The basketball programs are in as good a home as they can be in a non power-FB conference.

If it's looking like the indy route is a dead end, UConn football might want to consider talking with UMass and looking for invites to join one of the G5 conferences, but for football only. It would give those conferences a northeastern footprint.

Just a thought.

That's a great thought and makes sense but no G5 wants UConn or UMass for football only. AAC and CUSA should definitely consider football only adds but it doesn't look like they are interested today.

Situations assuming schools keep FBS Football:
1. UConn, Temple, UMass all end up in some iteration of the ACC
2. UConn and Temple to ACC, UMass to MAC or CUSA
3. UConn to ACC, Temple withers on AAC vine, UMass to MAC or CUSA

UConn and UMass simply can't last much longer as Indy so something will have to give.

I think UConn would hang in there as an Indy.

We will just continue to have a horrible record if we keep playing a schedule like this with very little margin for error.

-- UMASS fans are told to relax and enjoy the Holidays

-- 4M dollar exit fee from A10 if done by June 30th-IF UMASS joined it would be for 2025-26-ALL SPORTS

--most FB contracts have NO termination fee--not near as much admn. work to be done as with Del.

-- NO RUSH

-- UCONN is a "no go" in any way

-- CUSA will ONLY Add ALL-SPORTS Schools

-- MAC is unlikely to pursue expansion with ANYBODY in the near future

Perhaps folks will stop complaining about FB now. Here is your choice: indy FB or all-in to a conference like AAC or CUSA.
 
ESPN announcers on the Kansas broadcast were talking about the match up and conference realignment and how it’s impacted UConn and how it’d be great if these teams played each other more often Almost felt like they were signaling a hoops only move

Don't know if it was himself or the President objections to Liberty. With Delaware already committing may have soften those views. UMass fans say any G5 conference will do. My view is that the MAC is midwest regional and static. CUSA is semi national with east coast presence and then to the south and southwest. It's a better basketball conference than the MAC and has the feel of being on an upswing from near extinction as the B12 . It has an opening NOW and if it happens for 2025-26, will just miss one DECADE of being independent.

Why on earth do you think guys hired to call basketball games have any more info than anybody else about conference realignment?

Why is UConn a no go in any way? That means they wouldn’t take UConn for all sports.

Note: In no way shape or form would I advocate moving to CUSA for all sports.

You don't want to join CUSA now as it is very possibly CUSA opts out of Charlie Baker's compensation plan and the league will no longer be D1-A.

Chizzle, we are not getting into the American, which has potential to clear the bar. That said, it's the same boat as the A10, but the A10 does NOT have football. So wtf, there is no advantage staying in the A10 and CUSA gives us a home and access to the G5 wild card to the College Football Play-offs. easier schedule for making bowls and conference championships.

Pretty sure we knew something like this was coming with the NCAA President and former governor coming for a visit and did hint about this and the universities, who's budgets are over 100M. Will post that youtube after our Football NIL site page.

Believe Charlie Baker saw this as an opportunity to meet with MWC Commissioner Gloria Nevarez, who was receiving an award. She played for UMass Women's Basketball and where she received her Sports Management Degree. So with MWC Commissioner and NCAA President here, our Chancellor was probably given great advise. Then on October 28th, both the Chancellor and UMass President went to the West Point game. The week Army officially announced leaving independence. So key information shared and now we are talking with CUSA and hopefully in the next few months make an announcement.

Yeah I’m not paying for that.

Sounds like there is still ZERO interests in CUSA on the UConn side and that’s why it’s a No Go across the board.
