Texas is an older, more experienced and more physical team overall with a point guard that was too quick for ours and had a game and a half. Their two guard alone has over 2000 career points and was last year's WCC POY. She is a set up player on this team. This is a much better team than #10 and a legitimate Final Four contender with a very good coach. They are just better than us and the defensive coma we were in to begin the game ala UCLA dug us too deep a hole. We fought back but we were down 8 at the end of the 1st quarter and lost by 12.
We have a reticent All-American as of yet. She needs to shoot 20-25 times a game. We don't have other good shooters from the guard/forward position right now with AE playing center. It's just not enough shots by Paige. Nika has to shoot also and be a part of the game offensively. She has to look to score as everyone else should do especially Aubrey. KK, Ash and Q will likely be getting more playing time. There will be mistakes but that goes with the territory. and they will no longer be freshman by the Spring. As for Ice, her timing is off and she needs more quickness and less nerves out there. 5 turnovers are too many for that position. In short, with our injuries, this looks to be a really difficult year. Hopefully, CD will return and Ayanna as well but you can't play competition like this in November and December with a wounded team and expect to be invincible. We just aren't anymore and the Texas players acted like they just got into the FF because they beat us. Everyone wants to beat UCONN.
I will state again emphatically that the quality and competence of officiating in the women's game is abysmal and downright dangerous. There were at least 10-15 hard fouls by Texas not called. We had some also so I am not playing the favoritism card but they were clearly over their heads in this one. If all you are doing is calling out of bounds then why are you out there? It's sickening and reminds me of the NC game last year.
I can't believe Geno's calm demeanor. I hope he sent a message to the refs at some point that they were not doing a good job and that it is just not okay to put these young women at risk. The game has become decidedly physical and the purity and grace of the sport is being eclipsed. The only thin blue line are the referees and they cannot be relied upon other than to call balls and strikes. Go through this game slowly on replay and you will see a plethora of fouls. Since when is a body to body blow when you are taking a layup not a foul? Since when can you crash and push and shove without being called? We lost this game. The refs and the NCAA are losing the sport.
Someone is going to get seriously injured because the refs are propagating a culture of physicality. As a player, you play to the refs. If I can push and shove underneath, I will all game long.
