Men UConn Summer Baseball 2023

I used the Player Search function for the upcoming 2023 summer season for the three main college baseball summer leagues in New England. Here is a revised list of UConn players as well as some incoming recruits (transfers and incoming freshmen) currently slated to play summer ball in these leagues. This list is always subject to change, there are sure to be both additions and delations to this list. Indeed, there have been changes from when I first did this Player Search at the beginning of this thread. And just because players are on this list now, they don't always end up becoming part of these teams, but it is a starting point for the summer season.

Cape Cod League

Brady Afthim - Bourne
Ian Cooke - Brewster
Matt Garbowski - Chatham
Andrew Sears - Harwich
David Smith - Harwich
Jack Sullivan - Bourne
Paul Tammaro - Bourne

NECBL

Jude Abbadessa - Mystic
Maddix Dalena - Mystic
Tom Ellisen - Mystic
Drew Kron - Mystic
Caleb Shpur - Mystic - Shpur is also listed with North Adams in the Player Search function, but the current Mystic roster includes him.

Levi McAllister - Sanford
Mitchell Pascarella - Vermont
Jake Studley - Ocean State
Zach Fogell - Newport
Braden Quinn - Danbury
Ryan Daniels - Bristol

David Smith, Ian Cooke, and Andrew Sears are no longer listed in the Cape Cod League Player Search function as committed to play summer ball in that league.

Wondering if the reason Ian Cooke is no longer listed is because of the injury that kept him out of the NCAA Tournament games that UConn was involved in.

As for David Smith, it is not uncommon for players who have a solid chance of being taken in the MLB draft that they don't play in summer ball prior to the draft. We'll see if he gets drafted in the coming draft.

It's also possible these guys could show up to play in another collegiate summer ball league.

Matt Garbowski is no longer with Chatham of the Cape Cod League. He played in one game with Chatham.

Alex Mach, a transfer to UConn baseball from Avery Point, is now on the roster of the Danbury Westerners of the NECBL.

Why is Morton not showing up anywhere? Do we risk losing him to the draft as well?

Before the 2023 season started, I think a lot of people had Morton pegged as the most likely UConn player to picked in the upcoming draft due to his excellent 2022 season, and due to his combination of speed and power. Of course, as the 2023 season progressed, with Morton not matching up with his previous season, he spent a goodly amount of time in the bottom portion of the lineup. Still, often players are often taken in the MLB draft on the basis of their potential, so we will what happens with Morton.

Most UConn players show up in summer ball playing in the 3 main New England summer leagues. Because of this it is easy to scan the Futures League, the Cape Cod League, and the NECBL for UConn players as you will find a bunch of them in those leagues. Plus the player search functions are fairly easy to use in those leagues.

I believe there are over 80 collegiate summer leagues scattered all over the country, don't know the exact number, but there are a lot of them. UConn players do show up in some of these other leagues from time to time, but it requires quite a bit of searching since they don't show up in the same amounts as they do in the 3 main New England summer leagues. It is quite possible that Morton and other players may be in one of those other leagues, but good luck trying to find them, it isn't all that easy unless you want to search individual rosters in all those leagues.

I have noticed in the past that players who are eligible for the MLB draft and who have a good chance of being picked often don't show up in the summer leagues, at least right away. Sometimes they will appear in summer leagues after the MLB draft is over.

Before Jake Studley took over the right field spot for UConn last season, Brini was said to be in the running as being a possible starting outfielder for UConn before the season started.

A couple more incoming UConn baseball freshmen on summer ball rosters:

Ben Schild - Sportica - Atlantic Baseball Conferation
Gio Conte - Amsterdam - Perfect Game League

There are a bunch of UConn players who are slated to play for the 3 main summer baseball leagues in New England this year, most are in the NECBL.

That being said, there are a number of UConn players who are either playing for other summer leagues that have not been found out yet, or are simply taking the summer off from baseball. It will be interesting to see if they turn up on a summer ball roster at some point.

Gio Conte is an incoming freshman to UConn baseball this fall.

Interesting, this is a bit of a surprise to me. Luke Broadhurst is now listed as a summer ball Assistant Coach for Norwich of the Futures League. The Manager of Norwich is Kevin Murphy, who was a teammate of Broadhurst when they were both on the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team.

I heard that UConn baseball contacted the Norwich Sea Unicorns and asked about Luke Broadhurst becoming one of their Assistant Coaches this summer. Obviously the Sea Unicorns said yes to this request.

Don't know how common it is for players who still have eligibility to play in college ball (such as Broadhurst) becoming coaches for collegiate summer ball teams.

Garrett Coe is now on the roster of Falmouth of the Cape Cod League.

Glad he recovered from that line drive to the back. So much respect for Coe and Kirby

Garrett Coe has another year of eligibility to play with UConn baseball, so even though he was honored on Senior Day this season, I'm taking this appearance in the Cape Cod League as an indication that he will be back with UConn for another season.

I believe Devin Kirby has used up his collegiate eligibility, so I don't think he will be back with UConn baseball this fall. Still I have noticed in the past that the California Collegiate League and perhaps some other summer leagues allows players who have no more collegiate eligibility to play in their league.

Brady Afthim and Jack Sullivan just got activated today for Bourne

Most of the summer ball league seasons last for about 2 months. Even with players coming in from teams that have been eliminated from post season tournaments, I have always found all the player movement during the summer season with all the players coming the players coming and going from various summer teams to be rather amazing. Seems that summer rosters are constantly changing.
