UConn lands Brendan Adams, Tarin Smith in whirlwind recruiting weekend

I like these two players, but not sure it's a great sign for us to take both. We're extremely short on sure impact players for next year and I'm growing concerned that Adams could be on his way out.

Entirely agree. The signs are that Dan Hurley knows something we don't. Smith looks like a poor man's Anderson, except that he can't make even 2/3 of his FT's. 65% in each of his two seasons at Duquesne. It's a desperation move to sign a PG that you can't risk playing in the late stages of a close game. A lot of blind trust being asked here.

Poor man's AA? I see them at the same level. Suspect outside shooters who had big games off the bench who can score, play d and handle the ball. HE had a good solid lists of schools who wanted him.

I don't get how either signing today means anything on Adams. Gilbert has played in what like 5 games for us the last 2 years? We just had 3 freshman decommit. We needed depth.

I don’t love Smith by any means BUT

They know him intimately since Hurley Sr coached him & so did Kenya....

They know all his strengths AND warts....

He looks like a physically strong kid. U know Hurley wants that to improve. So he adds something we don’t have much of. I would bet this is a super high character kid as well.

My hunch is that he's a little better than Anderson. 65% from the line isn't ideal, but it isn't as if he's R.J. Evans and definitely hyperbole to say you can't play him late in games. But yeah, we only have one ship left now assuming there are no further departures, and we're hosting the St. John's kid as we speak. To me, if you're in a healthy spot, you're choosing between Adams and Smith. I could be off though.

Part of the reason those freshman decommitted was that they weren't that good. Replacing them with more players who aren't that good gets us to the same place we were headed. Depth is nice, but we need high level talent that can produce right away.

Smith is just one year and there really isn't anybody else that was better available that we had a chance to get. Unless you wanted Johnson for 4 years? We want to run a 3 guard offense at times and this gives us the depth to do it.

We absolutely needed 5 guards given the injury history of AG and now we have it. That is also exactly why Hurley is targeting grad transfers so he can focus on getting high level talent in '19. It's too late in the process for '18 unless he finds a needle in a haystack.

outside of a prayer that's going to have to wait until 2019. you've been following college basketball long enough to understand that; i'm not sure why you make such odd posts that have obvious answers.

The Smith move is about having bodies next year. If things work out he is the guy who comes in and plays 3-4 minutes a half to give the main guy a breather. I think Adams is a guy with an upside but isn’t taking us to the promised land next season.

I don’t think a poor mans “AA” exists in D1.

Heard he is friendly with Silverio and Lecque
They actually friends? Smith doesn’t follow either of those guys on Instagram and he follows 1000+. Or is it more of a connection to similar aau programs/coaches?

Smith is here as a combo guard off the bench, who can do a bit of everything. Adams is here to sit, unless injuries occur, and to be that combo guard off the bench for the next three years once Smith leaves. We have to snap out of this mindset where freshmen are supposed to contribute meaningful minutes. I’d Adams provides an upside surprise like his brother, great. If not, you still need experienced depth at guard. We’ve suffered for a lack of it for years.

And not taking the best players you think you can get last minute is a bad idea if Adams leaves exactly why? How does that make sense?

I'm going out on a limb here and throwing out that maybe . . . just maybe . . . Dan Hurley is looking for things that you are not. Maybe - just possibly - he sees things in this kid that you don't. Or can't. Or won't.

Maybe, just maybe, he's not merely trying to trawl for high percentage 3 shooters.

Maybe - it's possible you know - that the guy is more Ricky Moore or Taliek Brown than Rashad.

And finally, maybe Coach Hurley has a vision that doesn't stop at the "%3" or "FT%" column of the stat sheet.

Smith is here to run an offense and play great defense when called upon. Anything else is gravy
