For some unknown reason, some players have a good game against UConn. The Huskies get everybody's best effort. Today was martin's turn to feel her oats. The next game, she won't shoot like that. Their next game (13) NC St. Dec 1, will be formidable, but they won't be UConn. Everybody want to take down the Huskies.I could have done without Martin's 3 point barrage. I'd have been fine if she just put up her average points per game and it would not have diminished my enjoyment of this game one bit.
I said in chat that she seemed to be losing focus at times. This maybe offers an explanation. She played well on both ends but had some uncharacteristic lapses... Hope it doesn't linger, in many ways she's our most irreplaceable player. This would explain a lot. She was as tenacious as ever on D, and she took the ball to the rim in the second minute of the game -- the new Nika!!! -- but she seemed to be a little less in charge on the floor, and the team seemed a bit adrift at moments. I think this shows, yet again, how much the team depends on her.
Azzi's game in review, or night and day:

Also, our subs played more minutes than their subs. Neither team was deep. There were 19 points from the bench today
Ayanna is coming right along. She’s looking better every game
It was a game of two halves. Iowa won the first half 41-35. UConn won the 2nd half 51-38, erasing the 6 point halftime deficit in the process, winning by 7.You would’ve never thought that after the 1st half

Yes!! Geno earned his salary today. Does anyone one know if the women will attend the men's game later today and fly back with them, or are they already on their way back? My guess is both teams arrived together, they leave together. No need to pay for two charters coming back.IMO, it was more a case that they couldn’t figure out the triangle and two that Rebecca illustrated so well. Geno figured it out and corrected the problem at halftime, though
Really good coaching job by Geno today
Looking again at her stat line, she had a heck of a game today. Very impressive.Great game for November. If Iowa can consistently get that 3 from their other players not names Clark, they can be a final 4 team.
Boy I hope this game was a stepping stone for CD. We need her offense and moxy.
Aaliyah is the player we all expected her to be. I’m glad we have Azzi and other teams don’t.
Agreed. There were many great performances today. Some saw the game as a struggle for UConn at times. I saw it differently. I saw Iowa play hard and shoot the lights out. UConn had 3 unforced turnovers in the first half which was the difference in the score at the half.Just wow. So many great performances all at different times. And all were important. Great win.
That's the pafrt of herf game that I hate. She is too good to be doing that. They blew the whistle whenever someone breathed on Clark. She sure fell a lot for someone so strong.
When not dealing with an injury. Caroline is the most well rounded player.Caroline does SO many things on the court - underrated post defense, tie-ups, three-pointers, midrange shots, she’s an excellent finisher and I love love love her post-ups on smaller guards. So good to see her back.
Yes. So Strong. Everyone who heard one of Holly Rowe's pointless in-game stories knows how strong. They blew the whistle whenever someone breathed on Clark. She sure fell a lot for someone so strong.
Good help is sometimes hard to find. It was hard to enjoy the Q & A because of the incessant camera movement. After 5 games, things are beginning to slow down for her just a bit.Really Scary Really Fun. 5 players in double figures, tons of assists, and some defense when needed. Glad to see Caroline back in the mix and Ayanna actually made both layups on the first attempt.
If we play them again it won't be this close. Remember that we were missing Dorka and they had a low scoring guard go 6-6 from beyond the arc. That will never happen again, plus Azzi did not have her normal shooting game and CD is just starting her road back. We have as good of an 8 person rotation as any team in the country, actually ours is better!Iowa started 4 seniors. This may have been Clark's last chance to beat UConn unless they meet in the NCAAs.
This play to me was the most amazing for many reasons
1) Caroline just coming off her own 3pt shot gives up the chance for the go ahead 3pt shot for a better 3pt shot to Lou in the corner
2) Caroline could have been in ball hawk mode just back from a long layoff and passed to her "minutes" competitor.
I seriously thought at one point she might challenge KLS's 10 for 10 from 3. Seemed like she couldn't miss.If we play them again it won't be this close. Remember that we were missing Dorka and they had a low scoring guard go 6-6 from beyond the arc. That will never happen again, plus Azzi did not have her normal shooting game and CD is just starting her road back. ...............and a piece of the BADASS award.CD just said on the radio that Nika was SICK today! Played the whole game. I think we should give her a pass on the 6 TO's

To me, I don’t think Lou has a slow shot at all.Lazy passes, poor awareness on defense. We have to clean these things up before it costs us a game. They are mental lapses that I know were better than, we just lose focus too often. And Nika was right, she needs to be better and is hard on herself because she is a perfectionist and is damn near perfect when she plays the way she knows she can. I like that about her. 13 assists is incredible but she’s thinking about the 6 turnovers and our offense looking out of sorts at times. Those are easily fixable and she knows it. Without those small errors she’s a god and I think she will only get better, imagine that. Lou’s shot is good but she takes too long to shoot and tight defense on her and she has a huge problem. Scares me, this makes Caroline really important because I’m afraid Lou will have some games where she is a non factor. Love her and she’s a hell of a shooter but just my thought that that will be a problem against certain teams in the future. The refereeing was terrible, our girls couldn’t go near Clark without being called for a foul. Lots of fights and an incredibly gutsy win. All of the bad things I saw and to still fight back and get the win was really really impressive. I can help but think that we will only get better because the things I saw besides Lou’s low release can be fixed. I guess for Lou she just has to figure out how to get herself the space she needs to get her shot off be a she can shoot it, it just takes a year for her to release it.
I hate to disagree with the all-knowing Carnac, one of the BY's best posters, but I think she will be missed in the ND game. They have a lot of height up front. That's right!!! It was reported today that Dorka will miss the next two games (Providence Dec 2 (Gampel) & @ Notre Dame Dec 4).
She won't be needed for those tow games. If you're on UConn's schedule, now IS NOT a good time to play them, they're on a roll.![]()
That makes sense. Iowa deserves full credit.Agreed. There were many great performances today. Some saw the game as a struggle for UConn at times. I saw it differently. I saw Iowa play hard and shoot the lights out. UConn had 3 unforced turnovers in the first half which was the difference in the score at the half.
I've give credit to Iowa. It's not so much that UConn was out of sync, but that Iowa was in sync. Give credit where credit is due. Iowa stepped up and went toe-to-toe with UConn in the first half.
They were not able to sustain the intensity and scoring in the 2nd half. That and Azzi woke up and found her stroke in the 3rd quarter. Iowa won the first half. UConn won the second half. It's waaaayyyy to early to expect UConn or anyone other team to play a "perfect" game this early in the season. I'll look for perfect games in February and March not November.
They have good games because UConn double teams the star player and chooses a low scoring player to leave open. Kudos to Martin for making the Huskies payFor some unknown reason, some players have a good game against UConn. The Huskies get everybody's best effort. Today was martin's turn to feel her oats.
