Charlie -- do you mean high school bigs? If so, I can understand what you mean. I have not seen that many folks like Ms. Wilson or even Ms. Turner ready to step into a prime-time role. But what's that adage, takes awhile for a tall person to grow into those long limbs? Seems like there's some truth to that because a lot of the bigs I hear mentioned all seem to have the word "developing" and "upside." But that's better than "reached her ceiling!"
Personally, the one true "big" I've seen in New Jersey this year was Raven Farley-Clark, the 6'4" post who has been at several high schools but had a good year with Queen of Peace. She has good hands (didn't see her drop anything), blocks shots well (keeps the ball in court), has a pretty nice jumper from 10 feet and in, shot free throws well (and when under pressure late in games) and has a fairly nice little "swoop" hook, a la Ms. Turner. She's class of 2017. Pretty highly rated in the services, but have not heard her associated with any particular school...could be because she bounces from High School to High School and apparently just changed her AAU Team.
Also saw Kimi Evans, a 6'3" post for St. John's Vianney, the ultimate NJ State Champion. She was the third or even fourth offensive option on a senior-laden team (she's also a 2017er). But she knows what she's doing and has a nice touch. Not sure if she's a UConn-ND player, but a D1er, for sure....
The other "bigs" I saw were 6'0" wings who were playing inside for HS: Faith Masonius, the super frosh from Manasquan, who has an assortment of McHale-like up and unders, but can drill the mid-range jumper; and, Lucy Thomas - a sophomore -- another 6 footer, but playing for St. Rose. She was injured but she's kind of an inside-outside tweener now. But she knows how to score and rebound, so she'll get better.
That's what I got on the "from my eyes in the gym" only.....
