We currently need 3 guards. Not ideal. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall and Hurley has something already in motion
I see Hurly only picking up 2 at most in the Portal. Doubt he will pick up 3. We have Floyd, Gaffney, AJ and Hawkins that can play there now.

Like his efficiency. 42% from 3 is phenomenal for portal
Volume wise he wasn't where he needs to be for us (34-81) but he'd probably end up in the mid-high 30s like he was as a freshman (70-191, 36.6%). Either way, definitely an under the radar guy as a Plan B or C for us.

Did everyone forget that Hurley thinks Andre is a point at the next level? We still need another but look for Jackson to initiate the offense quite a bit. AJ made significant improvements this season. With his willingness to put in the time I expect more next year. Hawkins really needs to improve his handle as he will be counted on to create his own shot.
Regarding CFjr he may very well become a pg. Kid was 17 when he arrived on campus. He has a decent handle. He could grow into that position.

Here's some delicious meat for y'all to chew on... Ithiel Horton's dad going off on Capel as a crappy coach.

I'm not promoting DH going after Horton, but I've seen the kid play, and he's better than this current version of Pitt hoops.

Oh didn't see that. So it's like how Akok had a high 3PT%
Probably. Ideally we get someone in that 36-40% range on like 4-6 attempts per game. That might be wishful thinking at this point though

To clarify what I said, I don’t expect Gaffney to start. In my “ideal” scenario Diggins takes over, Jackson plays some 1 maybe with Gaff and Floyd chipping in small minutes of relief at the 1.

I think a transfer should either be a good shooting PG or a sniper wing, but either way to me the importance is a shooter, and hopeful Diggins and crew can run point.

Overall I’m hopeful Diggins takes a step and Gaff is a bit player off the bench. I can’t trust him to lead the show, I agree with everyone there and didn’t mean to suggest that.

I’m mush.

Sorry to see Diggins leaving, not totally unexpected though. I truly will never get why they gave him NO run given the state of our PG position.

A little kid naptime tape review. Video courtesy of @tcf15. From Newton's freshman season against us, Hurley's 2nd year. Reminder that this was 2 years ago, so he's improved since then.

0:32 - He scores their first basket on a fake pass, drive over Cole. Not an electric first step, but got into Cole's body to create space and showed the size to rise up and touch to knock it down off the move as a freshman

1:30 - Defends Bouknight in semi-transition. Does a pretty nice job staying in front, standing him up, and contesting the shot and forcing the miss.

Couple possessions where Vital beat him to his spots. Vital was so good. Then Gilbert guarding him and gave him some trouble. But 5:35 he does a nice job of reading the hard hedge and having the size and touch to pass over the top to the roll man. He drew the foul with his pass.

8:36 - Gilbert hounds him full court. Tough matchup for the freshman against a 4th year quick guard like Gilbert. But Newton fends him off with some behind the back moves and then attacks his strength in the matchup by driving right into Gilbert and scoring over him. Kadary Richmond-esque.

9:00 - Tracks back and helps on defensive glass, then reads Bouknight lost in a cross match and finds his guy with the hit ahead pass. If we want to play faster, these hit-ahead passes are definitely one way.

Next possession on D, Vital burns him with a hesi step-back. Vital was playing so well in this stretch. Newton used his length to contest, but had given him too much cushion in the first place. Effort level on other possessions is good. Showing, digging, rotating.

14:30 - Another really good job of being in control and using his height/length to burn our hedge and hit the roll man in the PnR. Having a tall PnR point guard must be so nice.

17:05 - Just once again abuses Gilbert by rising up right over him. Misses the first shot, but follows his own miss well.

21:19 - Finds the open spot in the break. Unselfishly finds his man completely open down low. Man gets fouled and misses a bunny. Think @husky429 calls these potential assists. That's the 2nd pass that's drawn a foul in addition to his actual assists.

30:59 - Good vision but maybe a bit too tough pass to his big on the break. A little risky. But then makes a nice cut to the basket. Misses the floater, but gets a hand on the rebound and intentionally tips it to his own guy. Reads the outlet for the steal but just goes out of bounds. Very active.

(Bonus - 37:20 - Bouknight alley-oop slam. "I thought that was going into the stands!")

40:04 - Hits the roll man again, this time with a little float pass from the left side.

41:49 - Late clock ISO. Big enough to bump heavy Josh out of the way to make space for more driving. Draws a foul, makes both. Soft touch gets a roll.

Halftime. 10 points, 3 assists (+2 drawn shooting foul assists), 3 rebounds.

Kid is awake. Will do the 2nd half later tonight.

Foul assist = what would have been an assist but they were fouled.

Potential assist = teammate missed.

Idk if these are actual common terms or just ones I used when coaching

SCORER ALERT:

Tanner Holden of Wright State just hit the portal.

6'6 185 with two years of eligbility remaining.

20.1p, 7.1r, 2.6a, 1.4s, 2.5 TO. Second in the nation with 7.8 FTAs/game. Only 1.1 3PA this season.

Career 55.5 2p%, 35 3p%, 74.6 ft%
While we still need a PG, this is the type of played I expect Hurley to target if he plans to give Jackson some burn at PG next year. A guy who can slot in to the 3 and score while AJax is facilitating.

Didn’t translate to games? He never got a chance!

I don’t disagree that he’s a good piece to have but I would not fault Akok at all if he wants to use his last year (or two if he wants to use his COVID year) in a spot where he is a lock for 25+ MPG.
I think Johnson wins the 4, if he’s a lottery pick like staff claims he should be able to claim it by year 2. I like Akok but man he has

5'7 Chris Lykes played for Miami and Arkansas. Any interest in this mighty mite?
no interest in Lykes- didn’t play much this year on a good Arkansas team. We need to get difference makers not depth.

Frick it, let’s start Jackson, Hawkins, Karaban, Samson Johnson, and Sanogo. Jackson running the point :) . We’d definitely wouldnt lose the rebound battle at least…
We might might be running out that lineup by necessity.

Not a shooter, but a high volume scorer and a very successful first NCAA year JUCO transfer so he was a sophomore). Also started hitting 3s at a much better clip towards the end of the year. Worth considering

A:TO ratio of 0.3 is a little concerning. He might want to be a little more than a backup to Hawkins and Floyd.

Height, rebounding and shooting look similar to Martin. Not nearly as big physically but rebounds, and FTA's say he can mix it up effectively.
