Transfer Portal Starting to Load

Here’s a pretty strong indication that roster continuity was important this year.

Even with Duke, it’s 22% because most of the guys are freshmen. Which is easier to get to fall in line with program culture than a transfer that has to forget his past program culture and relearn a new one after previous success with the old one.

Which is why I keep stressing I’d rather have this Solo solve our PG problems than bring in a guy who will most likely struggle his first year like every transfer we’ve had besides Cam lol.

Plus Solo solving that problem would solve the issue of him being small at 2G… giving room for Mullins to start there instead of him having to be small at the 3.

True but also, those same players lost in the first round for two of the squads that returned everyone (Auburn and UF) last year.

Auburn basically has all fifth year players (Broome, Mazara, Jones, Cardwell, Johnson) one senior (Kelley) and one sensational freshman. Five of the seniors started somewhere else and transferred in to Auburn. Broome (3/5), Mazara (2/5), Kelley (1/4), Jones (2/5), Johnson (2/5). Only Cardwell and Pettiford have been at Auburn since their freshman years of their main contributors.

UF has Clayton (2/4), Richard (3/4), Chineylu. (1/2), Martin (1/5), Handlogten (2/3) and Alexis (1/3) as transfers. Condon (2/2), Haugh (2/2), and Aberdeen (3/3) are the only major rotational players that have been at UF since their freshman years.

Of the two teams that had very good years last year. Duke has the best high school players to pick from and brought in some great fifth year role players. Houston though is interesting.

Duke has five freshmen, 1 sophomore, 1 junior who are solely at Duke. James (1/5), Gillis (1/5) and Brown (1/3).

Houston has Cryer (2/5), Uzan (1/3), Wilson 2/5 as transfers but probably actually as the most long term continuity with Roberts (5/5), Arceneaux (3/3), Tugler 2/2, Francis 4/4.

I'd say these teams did a good job of bringing in non-fifth year (one and done) transfers and letting the team grow with them (Duke aside who has at least 5 of it's top players as one offs at Duke). Duke aside, only one freshman plays a prominent role for the remaining three teams (Pettiford).

Started happening last year with guys opting not to be a 2nd round pick/potential 2 way for NIL dollars instead. Olivia Miles situation is kinda unique because this is the last year of the WNBA's current CBA so probably makes more sense to see what rookie scale contracts are after the new CBA.
They go down... ? I mean, they're still losing $40M a year. How do they imagine they'll make even more money ?

I have to agree. I’d root for any other Big East team in the tourney - not this Johnnies team. I despise everything they stand for.
Exactly. They made it very easy not to root for. From the pillaging from Pitino in conference to their pounding the chest for 1 be title to wave to the people in Storrs, it’s actually quite easy to root against them. I still do.

It's pretty weird you root against them in the tournament.
As the tournament schedule came out, Pitino said he’ll wave to Storrs as he passes them on the way. This entire season people were singing their praises. They could do no wrong while the internet took every chance they could to pounce on Hurley.

Do I like that he’s their coach? Yes I do. Do I like that they’re relevant? Absolutely. Do I ever want them to go further in the tourney than us? Hellllll no

I really need to know how something like this (and it isn't the only case) happens yet Cam couldn't even get them to listen to an appeal after they dismissed his request for an extra year of eligibility last year.
Kidding aside, you will see a lot of kids who otherwise exhausted conventional eligibility enter the portal. The NCAA is voting in April to make the 5th year(like Covid) permanent.

Good points. That validates our typical process with transfers. Reed, Mahaney, Newton, Diarra, and Alleyne all had multiple years of eligibility when they came here. Joey C and Cam didn’t, but they were players whose seemed to fit in seamlessly as shooters who usually played off the ball.

Goodness I hope not.

Yes we should root for teams in our division to do well in the playoffs even when our team gets knocked out. That’s why I’m looking forward to having Red Sox fans on our side when they don’t make the playoffs. Having then root for the Yankees should they be in the World Series is going to be fantastic. Maybe they’ll even wear Aaron Judge shirts!

Now that there aren’t as many super seniors since the COVID years are dying out, despite the high # of transfers the portal feels way thinner when it comes to the top guys. There really aren’t that many good PG options.

Small part of me hopes we strike out so we will have to go with Solo out of necessity and end up pretty good for it. Lol

But Nait George is still right there.
