Transfer Portal Starting to Load

Semi OT but the would-be #2 pick in the upcoming WNBA draft is going back to college for her extra year and transferring. Extremely clear on the women's side that salaries are higher in college than pros right now. Gotta imagine there will be situations like this on the men's side too for fringe first/second round picks
Started happening last year with guys opting not to be a 2nd round pick/potential 2 way for NIL dollars instead. Olivia Miles situation is kinda unique because this is the last year of the WNBA's current CBA so probably makes more sense to see what rookie scale contracts are after the new CBA.

Which is probably why he replaces Flagg, IMHO.

I think he'll wait till after the tourney is done to announce. Duke is the last of the five teams on his list still standing.

They need some bodies for sure.

They should be big players in the portal, but a lot depends on if Proctor goes pro for them but I imagine they lose their 3-5 (Maluach, Flagg, Knueppel) and they definitely lose their 2 (James). Gillis is done.

Hard to imagine they don't go after 3-4 portal players though with only four freshmen coming in in Boozer (PF), Boozer (PG), Henderson (SF) and Khamenia (PF).

So four freshmen, Brown, Ngongba and maybe Foster/Evans/Harris with the big question being Proctor. That just screams portal.

Pitino is starting to stack paid for talent. We thought Squid was bad. Give the vampire a blank checkbook and watch him do this with a roster.

He already has decades of experience doing it when it was against the rules. Now it’s right in his wheel house.
I know. This grabbing players from other teams is crazy. I was reading about some team that won it all in 23/24 where their starting backcourt and key back up were transfers. This has got to stop. /s

In my mind recruiting out of HS is now more important than ever. If you have a culture where guys want to come play here, the best way to tie up guys is out of high school. Plug in as needed with portal guys, but if you’re building an entire team from the portal every year like SJU, that just isn’t going to work. You need to have program guys like AK, Stewart, Ball, etc who absorb that culture and keep it going. It’ll be interesting to map the percentage of portal guys starting on championship teams over the next 5-10 years. I’m guessing most will have at least 3 of their 5 starters that are not from the portal.

Yeah it’s hard to build a championship roster with guys who played together for one year. St John’s may be a good regular season team but they’ll get thrashed by any team with legit NBA talent and size come tourney time. Which will be made through HS recruiting.

Heck yeah If he’d play as a stretch 4 but hasn’t he said he wants to be a wing? Mullins and Furphy will be competing for minutes at SF as is.
I don’t think Ament is realistic, and I’m irrationally high on Furphy. Still, I don’t think Furphy would deter us from going after a kid who is protected to go in the top 5 of a loaded 2026 draft.

Here’s a pretty strong indication that roster continuity was important this year.

Even with Duke, it’s 22% because most of the guys are freshmen. Which is easier to get to fall in line with program culture than a transfer that has to forget his past program culture and relearn a new one after previous success with the old one.

Which is why I keep stressing I’d rather have this Solo solve our PG problems than bring in a guy who will most likely struggle his first year like every transfer we’ve had besides Cam lol.

Plus Solo solving that problem would solve the issue of him being small at 2G… giving room for Mullins to start there instead of him having to be small at the 3.

True but also, those same players lost in the first round for two of the squads that returned everyone (Auburn and UF) last year.

Auburn basically has all fifth year players (Broome, Mazara, Jones, Cardwell, Johnson) one senior (Kelley) and one sensational freshman. Five of the seniors started somewhere else and transferred in to Auburn. Broome (3/5), Mazara (2/5), Kelley (1/4), Jones (2/5), Johnson (2/5). Only Cardwell and Pettiford have been at Auburn since their freshman years of their main contributors.

UF has Clayton (2/4), Richard (3/4), Chineylu. (1/2), Martin (1/5), Handlogten (2/3) and Alexis (1/3) as transfers. Condon (2/2), Haugh (2/2), and Aberdeen (3/3) are the only major rotational players that have been at UF since their freshman years.

Of the two teams that had very good years last year. Duke has the best high school players to pick from and brought in some great fifth year role players. Houston though is interesting.

Duke has five freshmen, 1 sophomore, 1 junior who are solely at Duke. James (1/5), Gillis (1/5) and Brown (1/3).

Houston has Cryer (2/5), Uzan (1/3), Wilson 2/5 as transfers but probably actually as the most long term continuity with Roberts (5/5), Arceneaux (3/3), Tugler 2/2, Francis 4/4.

I'd say these teams did a good job of bringing in non-fifth year (one and done) transfers and letting the team grow with them (Duke aside who has at least 5 of it's top players as one offs at Duke). Duke aside, only one freshman plays a prominent role for the remaining three teams (Pettiford).

They go down... ? I mean, they're still losing $40M a year. How do they imagine they'll make even more money ?

I have to agree. I’d root for any other Big East team in the tourney - not this Johnnies team. I despise everything they stand for.
Exactly. They made it very easy not to root for. From the pillaging from Pitino in conference to their pounding the chest for 1 be title to wave to the people in Storrs, it’s actually quite easy to root against them. I still do.

It's pretty weird you root against them in the tournament.
As the tournament schedule came out, Pitino said he’ll wave to Storrs as he passes them on the way. This entire season people were singing their praises. They could do no wrong while the internet took every chance they could to pounce on Hurley.

Do I like that he’s their coach? Yes I do. Do I like that they’re relevant? Absolutely. Do I ever want them to go further in the tourney than us? Hellllll no
