Yes, we can agree to disagree. No idea what the recruiting facts of top 25 programs has to do with this discussion. What's relevant is that the current structure creates an environment where scholarships go unused which is a shame. Kids are left behind, opportunities squandered. This year UConn will have six slots go unused. Six kids that could be getting a free education.

The system needs a little re-balancing.
As I mentioned previously, there is a trend this year (which did not happen much last year) for kids to enter the portal and return to their school. Why? They might have found out there was tepid demand for their services or both the player and the coaches realized that there was space on the roster that would go unused if the player didn't come back.

Also, we are really talking about grad transfers which might 50% of the kids in the portal. Undergrad transfers, with the exception of the very top players, have always faced an uphill climb getting an FBS scholarship as schools don't want to have to sit a player on scholarship for a year. That is why undergrad transfers at FBS schools typically wind up at FCS or below schools as they can play immediately.

So what if kids are checking into the portal and back out? What does that do to support the idea that 25 rather than 30 is the best limit for recruiting classes?

All it tells me is that kids can't find homes thanks in part to this rule and so they have to try to go back to the place that they might not want to be anymore. Wow, that's a great system. Everyone worries about coaches pushing players out, but they never give any consideration to players becoming trapped and why are some trapped? - because the 25 man cap doesn't give UConn (or other schools) the room to give them a new home.

A new dividing line at 30 won't fix every scenario, but I think it gives the plumbing better balance. Time to widen the pipes.

If you make the limit 30, many schools will sign 30 almost every year and that means kids will be pushed out. (It still happens today, but to fewer kids.) Go back and look at what used to happen before the 25 limit was introduced. Kids got pushed out all the time, sometimes just weeks before practice began. With 30, that means you can bring in 120 over 4 years and 150 over 5 years with a total scholarship limit of 85. Makes no sense.

To be clear...

Makes no sense to keep kids trapped. Kids want to move around and this rule keeps them trapped. Yay for entrapment. Time to rebalance. Kids on the three and four deep as juniors want to move on but they can't...no seats/system is too narrow. #widenTHEpipes

Since neither of us are making new points and havent been in months I will move on. You keep suppressing the market though, good idea!

I know UConn has walk on's that get scholarship each and every year especially with being under the limit of 85. So they can add others at the beginning of camp at least for a year. Anything to help UConn for the next season I am all for

Followed this link to another and found this post from "exjock" who seems to have some anger issues. His misspelling of "Edsel's" name might indicate he also hates Fords.

"Edsel is one of coaching’s biggest scumbags. He is a tyrant to his players using long ago dismissed practices while threatening to pull scholarships for those out of favor. He is a disgrace to the coaching ranks.
There’s a reason that UConn has been reduced to the very worst program in FBS, and that is Randy Edsel. Yet the elite administrators of UConn facilitate this idiot who used them in his first stint while dragging them into oblivion in his second. (One wonders what does Edsel have on them? Naked pictures with Jeffery Epstein?)
The New England area deserves better for their football players, and college football doesn’t need this evil inept black mark dwelling any longer in the sport. SOMEONE STEP UP AND FIRE THIS DISGUSTING LEECH!!!"

HCRE2.0 isn't good (or is it bad) enough to be THE reason for where UConn football is. Got to give some serious credit to Trustees, Suzy, and anyone who would hire PP, Diaco and HCRE2.0.

UConn NCAA Transfer Portal Commits/Transfers to date:
  1. Jeff Woods - Norfolk State (FCS)
  2. OL Robert Holmes -Austin Peay (FCS)
  3. OL Stanley Hubbard - James Madison (FCS)
  4. RB Dante Black - Richmond (FCS)
  5. Michael Beaudry - Idaho (FCS)
If this list doesn't make people realize the talent level that was here previously nothing will...I was told by a previous coach their was a lot of D2 kids, never mind FCS..

Good point, but 3/5 of this particular list could've done some things at the FBS level. Other guys that have yet to let the cat out of the bag as to where their landing spot is are the guys your source might be referring to moreso.

This has all been interesting talk and a lot of thoughts on the talent issues appeared to be confirmed. I am cautiously optimistic that this years class is a mine in the right direction. On to 2020 !

For kids that aren't immediately eligible at the FBS level (grad transfer), with few rare exceptions of kids with tremendous talent, they have to transfer to FCS schools. FBS schools don't want to use a scholarship on a kid that has to sit out a year.

I won't count Woods because it was off field stuff here. That leaves 4 guys. All brought in by Edsall. So...

The only counter argument is Diaco kids have yet to land anywhere.

I hope Beaudry starts slinging the ball all over the field in Idaho. It makes the discussion here way more interesting.

I can't figure out what happen to him. Did he not grasp the offense? Was his arm hurt? He didn't seem to have quite enough zip for FBS. IDK.

Numbers game. He was looking at 3rd or 4th string QB.

Yes that was the outcome which was clear. What I am pondering is the why, as he didn’t performed as hoped.

He definitely didn’t appear to have the zip on the ball he had in Florida. Could have been he wasn’t talented, but I have a funny feeling he’ll be better in Idaho. Just seems to be our luck.

If RE's first guys were FCS, then most of Diaco's will be FCS or D 2 as well, Tyler Coyle and Nino Leone being the only exceptions.

It would've been more surprising if a D2 QB transfer played well at the FBS level. Some here overrated him because Peyton Manning said something polite about him once and he took the OL for ice cream.

Yeah, I think he lost something on that arm of his. The zip wasn't there this fall.

The one thing that still concerns me a lot about our coaching staff is our QB coaching.. that's probably THE most important coach on the offensive side of the ball... Moyseenko better show us something. He has to... Or else we're not going to be very good again... We can't have QBs throwing INTs left and right or getting sacked a bunch of times. I know I know, the players play, coaches can only do so much, BUT, that's why EVERY FBS school has a QB coach that, typically, had a coaching background for the QB position. We currently do not. I don't count Moyseenko coaching our QBs last year as experience (sorry). He was thrown in there out of desperation (not necessity)...
I hope that guy makes me eat crow, big time... Please prove me wrong.

It's a fair comment. QB is still a mystery. MB showed nothing. JZ was wildly inaccurate and displayed very poor pocket presence....and they can't figure out if they trust SK to play at all.

Hard to have confidence that there will be progress in this area. Unless...Leon is the saviour.

Let's hope one of these kids have TRUE COMMAND of our offense. We need a LEADER out there... PERIOD.
They are all talented, BUT as a QB you gotta have the mindset of being THE GUY.. and play like it too..
