The UConn Report on twitter saying TJ Weist our new OC

I think it's more telling as the exact qualifications of Weist more than anything. It's a job posting for him specifically. He had those areas at some point in his career.

so are you saying I shouldn't bother updating my resume to include "strong commitment to the academic goals of the University"?

Go for it. They have to interview more than 1 candidate because its a state job.

Good luck ;)

I think this is the pic he was talking about.

I find Weist an odd choice if this turns out to be accurate, and potenitally troubling. He is 7-8 years removed from being an OC. If this is P's and GDL's ploy to essentially keep GDL in charge of the offense I will be one very vocal and critical fan. I sincerely hope this is not the case.

That all said, Cinci has had very solid offenses since joining the Big East and every year they seem to have a great group of receivers. So who knows.

Would love to hear that Foley is back in charge of the OL and GDL will be filling water bottles..........

Dogs, I 100 percent share your concern about this being yet another scam run by P to save and hide GDL, this time to save his 272K salary for another year. They already pulled it off once at Syracuse in 2004 with a demotion that turned out to be phony. IMO GDL is the nominal OC until he's totally gone from the program. In fact, he should wear an electronic monitoring device on gamedays and keep 1,500 feet from the stadium UConn is playing in and PP's headset & other electronic devices should be tapped to make sure they are not communicating.

Could Weist be the next head coach? Not sure why anyone would take a job on PP's staff unless they thought they had a chance to be the next head coach. Everyone knows that PP has a year to improve and that being on his staff is not a solid long term proposition.

I'm not sure I get what you mean by this statetment... is this comment that he needs 7-8 more years of "seasoning" before being considered for an OC position?

Football Scoop

UConn: Former Cincinnati receivers coach TJ Wiest has been named offensive coordinator / receivers coach at UConn. George DeLeone's title will shift to associate head coach / offensive line.

I think PP got the message from WM loud and clear. A charade will be much harder to pull off under WM than JH. Wait and see attitude. Long way game-day!

It is much worse if P actually believes that GDL is the best coach on the staff to handle the OL coaching duties. There's a difference between nepotism and incompetence.

I was referring to the play-calling.

Actually, nepotism and incompetence often go hand in hand, not always - but frequently .

I don't think the coaching carousel is done yet.

PP may have gotten the message loud and clear, but that message was not conveyed to Coach DeLeone. Only had he gone to the Giants and left the program, would I agree. Coach DeLeone is toxic to this offense. Is there a way we can ensure his game day headset has no one on the other side? I don't want his signals getting crossed with those going into Chandler Whittmer.

So my questions would be; does Weist share GDL's OLine philosophies, and if not....how the hell is THAT gonna work?

You would if you were currently out of work and there were no better options.

I think this is great news. For everyone that harps about GDL and his toxicity, it remains to be seen whether it is really true in this reduced role. He has been an OL coach in half or more of his coaching positions over the years. I think he knows more about it than any of us do. The team had a new system and reduced talent. Let's see what happens and not be so negative all the time.

Meanwhile the prospect of a spread passing attack is exciting, and honestly, changes completely what we expect from the OL. Our passing offense did improve last year, did it not? It was the run blocking that was weaker. So given that our whole offensive strategy is perhaps about to change, I will be cautiously optimistic.

Right...If there is an issue, Does O-line Coach Deleone go over the head of Offensive Coordinator Weist and b1tch to Associate Head Coach Deleone, who in turn, overrules Offensive Coordinator Weist on behalf of O-line Coach Deleone?

Offensive coordinator is over a line coach. Cincinnati was a zone blocking team as well so the philosophies there are similar. OC makes the plays and gdl will be a bitch. As it should be

I have no idea what a Cincy receiver's coach from 2012 would think about zone blocking, except that it can work quite well. I just took a look at this clip, and I might be way off, but it sure looks like this run was an inside out zone blocking scheme up front for Abernathy to either hit a wide open hole on the reverse if the DE failed to maintain the hard edge, or be isolated 1-1 in the open field with a DE on a full run. The DE stayed home on the edge, and Abernathy made his move and went right around him to pay dirt. There are other running lanes that could have been taken advantage of, on the same blocking movements of the line and TE, with different backfield packages and plays for the ball carrier. This one was an end around reverse.

We tried to run the same kind of thing many times, and generate the same kind of patterns in creating lanes up front, building off the running game, but we had a lot less success.

The system works, if we're going to run it, we better make sure that the coaches are teaching it effectively to players that can run it effectively and that includes backfield and wideouts (coaches and players) in addition to the OL coaches and players.

actually the Louisville weakside DE stunted underneath, and the tackle was going straight up field and got off the block to set the edge, Abernathy was still isolated 1-1 with a single defender to beat (as long as the other 9 maintained blocks) and made a move and ran right around the defender and straight to the endzone untouched.

You need all your players to make their blocks on the field for the running game to work well, and you also need a ball carrier, that the vast majority of the time, is going to have to either make somebody miss, or run through and over somebody to get big chunks of yardage.

Weist was recruiting coordinator at both WKU and Cincy... ;)
Yeah I know...and it seems that Cincy fans liked him a lot..they say he is both an excellent coach and tecruiter. But...and tbis is a BIG but...he will be OC here so someone else will have to handle recruiting coordinator duties. Unfortunately unless P lets Cersosimo go, or he leaves on his own I see him moving to what ever position isn't filled in the other job announcement for a RB or DB/Special teams coordinator. If Perkins gets the Charleston Southern job we may see that replacement named RC...unless P gives it to Wholley. If Cersosimo loses the RC spot along with being moved to another position maybe he looks to move on after this season...which if this team can't win at least 8 games and is competitive in all 12...will be a moot point when Manuel cleans house.
