The Official Thread of The New York Yankees - 2022

Most of the NY sports stations today have been discussing that the two people Yankee fans most wanted gone this offseason (Cashman & Boone) appear to be returning while the one guy they absolutely wanted back (Judge) may not.
They as also mentioned a little quirk of fate: the Yankees open the 2023 season at home against the San Francisco Giants.
 
In all candor I'm not sure (beyond the raw meat for the fan base) that firing Boone would have accomplished much if Cashman remains. I still am fully of the belief that as long as Cashman is there, the manager's job is to follow Cashman's instructions.

Not to that level, I think Michael Kay explained what's going on very well.

They're both terrible at their job and should've been gone before this season.

That were I am right now. I have been a Yankee fan since 1959. The M & M Boys Yogi, Whitey, The Moose and all those other greats up thru Jeter, Mariano, Paully the Warrior, Jorge and Bernie.

As long as Hal runs the franchise and Cashman remains at GM, the Yankees will not win another World Series. Doesn't matter who the manager is.
 
Moneyball/analytics was used by Billy Beane because he had the smallest amount of money and had to find a way to compete against the big dogs. The Yankees are the biggest big dog in baseball and they most heavily rely on analytics out of all the teams. They're not supposed to be acting like Oakland and Tampa.

There's obviously a role for analytics but when it dictates everything you do and you have everything mapped out for each inning of each game not allowing your eyes to make decisions and not being able to make moves on the fly it prevents you from winning. Every time they show Boone in the dugout he's on his tablet.

Analytics has been around long before Billy Bean. Look at old dugout shots and you will see stacks of 3 ring binders. Those binders had info on all the players.

During Joe Torre's run as Yankee manager, there were always the pile of binders on the ledge of the dugout. The info was there, but the info didn't dominate how the team was lead on the field.

Cashman has gone to the extreme with analytics. The downfall of the Yankees.
 
I saw on Twitter that Kaye was getting crap because he wouldn't flat out say that Boone and Cashman should be fired. He said that he will criticize...but not call for termination. He also said he won't because of the impact of firings to families.

Ok...that's weak. Cashman's family will be fine. He won't be going on unemployment. I do think that Kaye shouldn't call for firings because if they aren't fired, he needs to still work with them.

So...i don't blame him for not calling for termination...but his excuse is lame.
 
of the two, boony was my priority. i hear he's coming back. noice.
looks like cash will be back, too. also noice. we had a fun and successful season, so why not?
feels like the left side, 3b, ss, lf, will be the areas of rejiggering going forward. i sure hope that we can lock up benny. i think taillon is a free agent, and i like him, sort of, so not sure how that works out. either way, him or someone else management decides on, is fine by me.
prolly gold watch time for aroldis, zach, and a few others.
i wonder what happens with carp? i can't see any way where rizz isn't locked up soon. he's just too good. marwin was a good player but with cabrera showing that he can play anywhere, i expect mr gonzalez to be moving on as well.
also feels like hicks has worn out his welcome, especially since there are soo many other choices in house. i also wonder how his situation goes down. obviously, hairy grabbed the spot - 'I am the starting centerfielder for The New York Yankees going forward.'

i have every expectation of cheering for mr cole and mr gleybar in
2030. this past season, mr cole obviously was developing some soft spinning stuff. looks like he was tossing some 85 mph junk that was mostly good, and given his brainpower, i wouldn't be surprised to see him work on making it even slower. the man never misses a day on the job, solid like a rock, so having as much as 15 mph+ separation between his stuff will confuse batters even more.

actually, it's the complete opposite. both fans and haters care deeply aboot all things Yankees here in these United States. the most, and it's not even close!

of course, when you visit south of the border and travel all the way to tierra el fuego, u learn that there is only one team even on the radar for untold millions upon millions of folks. they all wear the hat, and stuff. they count, too.
my mistake as a fan was coming to this place, which clearly is the place for angry, cranky, and perpetually butthurt armchair gm types.

i once made a wrong turn and ended up in nablus. same thing.
sometimes, we just drop the lines, let the boat drift, and listen to john and susan on one of those blissfully purposeless blazing hot summer days. living large - time for a swim! works well at the pool, lake, and bathtub too. did looie bring his a-game today? where's the doritos? i swear we packed them! dang, the flies are biting today, i hope the fish are, too...
next up? hot stove.

Randy Levine: How Yankees are approaching Aaron Judge sweepstakes

Randy Levine is absolutely a strong behind the scenes player. Last off-season and again this year, he will play a more important role in retaining Judge than Cashman.

NY still skews to the George S model of preferring veteran "names" to young, relatively unknown players. See: Donaldson, Rizzo, Gonzalez, Carpenter, etc. Some work out, but often the players are available for a reason - they're best is past them. Where would Cabrera have been this fall if he played a full season vs. Gonzalez? I've found this really puzzling as Hal clearly is VERY budget conscious despite sitting on a franchise gold mine, and he goes along with paying Donaldson $20+ million.

If Randy Levine's argument is that Judge needs the Yankees as much as the Yankees need Judge, then he's as delusional as he ever was.
 
Not sure why something that's nearly two months old is being thrown around like it's a recent plot twist.

I was furious when I first heard Levine say this. There's no reason the Yankees should ever take the stance that a lesser offer by them is still the better offer.

It would only be a recent plot twist if Levine were recently hired and his asininity weren't previously a known. Hopefully Levine is nowhere near the negotiating table.

I'm good with this.. He's been solid for our clubhouse... I also like the fact that he seems to understand that $17 million per is more than enough to live off of over a long period of time...
 
It feels fine...but every time they re-sign a player, I worry that they will just end up with the same team as last year. But....they don't have a ready minor league first baseman (that I know of) and I don't think there is a better FA first baseman...so the deal makes sense.

I like Rizzo....seems like a good team guy...I just want to see what else they do before I get on board with bringing back the same players.

Developing minor leaguers for us has been tough since the success around the Core 4
 
So...they re-sign IKF for $6mm.....why? It feels like the one position they have some minor league options is SS and 3B. And they have Donaldson and DJ.

Of course...they might move on from Donaldson (should have never traded for him).... but I would think DJ is staying. And they could move Torres and put DJ at second.

But still...even with multiple other moves...is this a good signing? I don't think so.

It's a good signing because $6M is not a lot - basically middle reliever money - and he still has trade value. Not tendering him a contract and losing him for nothing would be stupid. Just because he was offered a contract doesn't even mean he will be on the team to start the year.

Also, from what I've read, the Yankees never really wanted to take Donaldson. He was the poison pill the Twins included as the price for IKF and the catcher and for taking Gary Sanchez off their hands.

Yeah, I have no issue with the signing. A versatile fielder who has good speed and makes contact. Plus, his presence wouldn’t block anyone else from playing. Likable guy too.
