Ok...so he only pitched 6 innings and got 11 strikeouts.

Taillon did better than I thought he would. Schmidt got hit again.

Hopefully they get some clutch hits the last few innings...but I'm not holding my breath.

Verlander was toying with them in the last few innings, they were like candy for him. That’s the offensive juggernaut that Cashman has put together over the years. Good thing he signed Donaldson he was so overmatched every AB it was laughable. Your 5th hitter with no shot to drive in any runs is never good!

Hope they can change the offense tonight!

Seventeen (17) strikeouts…

I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen Donaldson actually do something productive at the plate. He stinks.

Love Carp but he has no business being in the lineup. He’s lost at the plate. It’s not his fault, he’s working his way back from injury but YOU DON’T HAVE PLAYERS WORKING THEIR WAY BACK PLAYING IN THE ALCS!

I forgot Montas is even on the team he’s been out so long…but again, not really the time to throw him out there to get him some work and hope for the best.

I hope I eat a few heavy scoops of crow on all of this when all is said and done but this game was infuriating on many levels.

The people who run the team treated game 1 like a throwaway game, same way they treated game 3 of the Guardians series.

According to Statcast, the only park Judge’s long fly ball would have been out of last night is Yankee Stadium. Boone said the roof being open “killed us”. Wasn’t the 13 strikeouts that killed us, it was the roof being open.

I haven’t been this frustrated watching a team play since the later Ollie years when we’d routinely be losing by 20 at halftime…

And to think that DiMaggio's highest strikeout total in his career in one season was something like 39. Granted, he played less games, what, 154 then, compared to 162 in a season now, but still a crazy stat line.

Modern baseball is littered with way too many style over substance entertainers, plenty of dugout/base path/field dancers to go around. Can't forget to credit the bat flippers when they do make contact, but that's the way the game is performed.

Much easier to not even tune in on TV for quite some time now, radio broadcasts at least dampen the visual exasperation of poor fundamental play.

It's a lame excuse because both teams play in the same park, but Boone is also not wrong. Bregman's homer was the 5th weakest hit postseason homer (91.8mph) since Statcast started recording and his homerun had a 0.040 expected batting average. Minute Maid Park boosts homeruns by 13% to left field when the roof is open.

On the flip side, Minute Maid reduces home runs to right field by 5% when the roof is open. Judge's flyout had a 106.3mph exit velocity and only went 345 feet. Similarly hit baseballs with the same launch angle and exit velocity traveled an average of 414ft during the regular season. Kole Calhoun's homer on on 5/18 was the previous low distance at 366 feet.

Who cares how hard balls were hit or that they had their roof open? One was a no doubt homer and the other was easily caught by Tucker. Oneil Cruz hit the hardest ball of the statcast era and it bounced off the wall for a single, I doubt his manager was whining it wasn't a homerun. Boone is a putz.

I agree fully with Super John's take. Both teams played under identical conditions, we have nothing to complain about.

When I first heard the roof would be open my thought was "the Astros are trying to pull something". I later heard it wasn't their decision and they were angry about it (my guess was they felt it would diminish home field advantage).

I had forgotten they had a retractable roof (on average they've opened it slightly more than once a year from when the ballpark was opened) and it looks like the taxpayers were ripped off spending an additional couple hundred million dollars to have a retractable roof.

Yes, the way things turned out, Bergman's HR may have been playable and Judge's may have been out if the roof was closed. Nobody knew going in how the wind would play and there had to have been other plays/fly balls impacted by the wind. Both teams faced the same conditions. Claiming the open roof "killed us" sounds whiny and weak. Not a good look for a team with championship aspirations.

Hilarious to think they would honestly believe the roof made any difference. If the roof was closed they wouldn’t have struck out 13 times? Lol 30 times in 2 games, heck go back to the last Cleveland game they’ve struck out 42 times. That’s not baseball it’s pitiful. Have to have hitters they don’t nothing has changed.

DJ and Benintendi are huge losses we might give the Astros a hard fought 6-7 game series ending in heart break in Houston, if they were healthy. I see a 5 game series now maybe we win a fluky game at home to force a game 6 to give the fan base a glimmer of hope, only to get destroyed in Houston.

Now your throwing Peraza in there against Houston when he should’ve been called up by August lol. It is the right move still but you wanted him up earlier so he could adjust to slumping against quality pitching, now he has to learn on the fly. IKF should be playing 3B over Donaldson.

I've had an ongoing debate with a young (he's a year younger than my son) coworker on the approach the Yankees have adopted. He believes in it and claims it's entirely a matter of whether the team "gets hot at the right time". I on the other hand believe if a team is built correctly, it would take another correctly built team to knock them out of the playoffs, regardless of how hot the teams are.

I've believed for years that the 1998 Yankees would be ten games better in the regular season against today's competition than they were in 1998.

I also contend that advanced metrics, spin rates and love of high velocity fastballs has destroyed pitching. My biggest case in point is that nobody would value Greg Maddux today, due to his less than stellar fastball velocity. I need someone to convince me that he couldn't be as dominant today as he was in the 1990's.

As a team the current version of the Yankees is incapable of advancing runners, having productive at bats without getting hits, and with a team batting average against all pitching of maybe .225 and sub .200 against playoff caliber pitching, those hits don't happen close to often enough.

This is not a difficult team for good pitching to shut down. Sadly they were built on the hope that no opponent would have sufficient pitching to shut them down throughout an entire series.

No doubt but once again Cashman went into the year minus Benetendi had to trade for him. And it was nice to have another .300 hitter in the lineup no doubt. And DJ is .260-.270 on a bad year so that would’ve been helpful as well.

But going after Donaldson was awful and he just doesn’t hit with RISP. Lineup today should have Peraza at SS and IKF at 3rd with Cabrera in left.

IKF is no prize. I would have put Cabrera at third (with Peraza at short) and kept Stanton in left.

To your first point, generally that's probably true. But in a short series vs a long season, any hot team can win. To me, the Braves were the most balanced team in baseball this year. They're home golfing and hunting.

Regarding Maddux, hard to say. I don't think there was as much scrutiny on umps in the 90s. No technology out there to look at how many pitches missed the strike zone. Maddux might have still been close to as great as he was very cerebral with pinpoint control. The guy whom I believe certainly would've suffered is Glavine.

IKF is a .260 hitter that’s a prize on this team of .200 hitters. Cabrera minus the one 2 hit Cleveland game has looked overmatched and his SS play was not very good either. Need guys who can put the ball in play.
