If I had a wish, I’d trade some mix of Vientos, Mauricio, Acuna and Baty for Duran with the Sox. I HAVE to think something like this is coming. We have like 7 second basemen.
 
Why don’t you love Alonso??????? He put fannys in the seats he was great in the locker room and he hit a lot of . And by you I mean Stearns

I'd love this, though I think you're likely looking at adding Tong and Jett Williams along with one of those infielders. Which I would still do honestly, he's so good

Baty was definitely dependable at 3B and would have had no issue with him at 3B this year, only brought up Vientos because he was the 3B last year that the goal was to upgrade on. Think having Bichette at 3B and now Baty in the McNeil role playing 5 times a week between 1B/2B/3B/LF can be really valuable. Not really following what you mean by question marks at the corners though. Bichette and Polanco have long proven histories of being very productive players. Unless you mean just defensively, but even that's a stretch for me. Look at a guy like Jonathan Aranda who went from a 2B with no range to a 75th percentile defender at 1B full time last year.

Agree there's still more moves coming, so hard to compare to a complete team from last year yet. They're still in on Bellinger which I think makes too much sense to fill out the OF with Soto and Benge. And like you said, lots of excess infielders that you can still approach Milwaukee, Minnesota, Detroit with to improve the pitching. Or you stay in the FA market with Valdez.

Yeah I specifically was talking defense. Not questioning the offense of the corners. To me it’s a question simply because we haven’t seen it. Does it make sense that a middle infielder should make that transition and show improvement on his defensive metrics? Sure, I can totally get behind that. But it’s still just hypothetical until you actually see it play out in the field and see what happens. It’s a brand new position for each, so I think it’s reasonable to call that a question.

Reel in Bellinger and make a trade or Peralta or someone of that ilk and Stearns comes out looking really solid this off season imo.

It's definitely hypothetical, but I guess my point is that the Mets corner guys were so bad last year that it's literally impossible for it to be worse. Alonso was 39th out of 40 qualified 1B. Vientos was 37th of 39 qualified 3B. Baty was better at 3B at 13th but spent half the year starting at 2B where he was below average too at 26th of 42 qualified players. So there's question marks with the transition of Bichette and Polanco, especially Bichette who was bad at SS defensively, but the bar is very low for improvement

Totally fair. I'm cautiously optimistic about the transition as well.

What are you guys envisioning as a potential line up at the moment?

CF ???

I know there's a lot of chatter about Benge making the opening day roster, do yall think it's a lock that either Benge or Taylor is starting opening day? Surely not both. Also, I recall Baty being talked about a few years ago as potentially playing OF. On the MLB level he's only played 1 game there I think - does he have experience in the minors in LF?

Baty played 29 games in LF in the minors, so not much. Pretty much agree with that lineup as of today, so feel like there's at least 1 move coming to add a bat. My guess is Baty in LF and Taylor in CF as of today, and Benge is up by May to take over. That lineup looks a lot better if it's Duran or Bellinger slotted in at CF
 
The dynamic certainly shifts if we get a bounce back from Vientos. If he is hitting like he did 2 years ago and Alvarez hits like he did the 2nd half of last year, suddenly it's a fairly long line up. Our main issue down the stretch last year was starters unable to get into the 6th inning...but an issue all season long was the lack of production from Vientos namely, but also Alvarez for about half the year and Baty for stretches as well as Mauricio and Acuna never getting anything going. The "baby Mets" let us down in large part last year. Hopefully we see some sort of uptick this year from a couple of those guys.
 
I'm no expert by any means, but I am not sure how much higher Alvy's ceiling can be. He's a free swinger with a long swing and lots of misses. He gets into hot streaks and has pop in his bat, but I think he "is what he is" for the most part with some obvious seasoning and maturing to come.

Vientos? My worry there is that they found the holes in his plate coverage. He was great in the 2nd half of 2024 but he was new and now that they have tape and could build an approach, he was pretty mediocre all year in 2025. It's up to him to now adjust and I worry about that.
 
I expect we'll see a much different Alvarez this season now that Eric Chavez is gone. I don't think it's a coincidence that Alvarez sucked in the majors (and I think injuries played a factor here as well) and then went to the minors and absolutely raked, then sucked back with Eric Chavez. Eric Chavez clearly hated Alvarez and I think he knew that and was in his head. He came off a great rookie year and Chavez basically told him you sucked and need to fix your entire approach
 
it would be ideal if Alvarez wasn’t as much of a free swinger and swing and miss guy, but I also don’t even care about that aspect as much as the power.

He came up and mashed for power his rookie year and then went basically a season and half with very little pop at all in his bat. Then the second half last year he showed that power a little more again. Thats what I personally want from him. Be a 25 homer guy even if you strike out a lot.

Robert is super talented and very good defensively. I was hoping my Yanks would make a move on him and let Grisham walk.
 
Seems like a good low risk gamble. If Robert can get closer to his ceiling you have an all star patrolling CF with plus defense, speed and above average power.

If he doesn’t find himself at the plate - you still get speed and a very good glove and it cost you a guy who is basically a pinch runner and late inning defensive replacement.

Really just looks like they need one more bench piece and maybe a RP. Though they may just use that last bullpen spot to cycle guys up and down from AAA. And Mauricio may take that last bench spot

I am really blown away by the moves in the past week, love Robert + Peralta - and just as much Tobias Myers.

The pitching still concerns me, Manaea was hurt all year, I don't trust Senga as far as I can throw him, and Peterson is inconsistent..

I like that they addressed the bats, but I felt the same way at the trade deadline last season - NEED POWER ARMS.

They spent all those great deals on building this monster bullpen - and then they couldn't have a starter get out of the 4th.

too many 4 inning starters really deflated the bullpen even by midyear

I would have Tong in place of Senga immediately. Senga would be long relief or spot start unless injuries dictate otherwise.
