The Official 2024 New York Yankees Thread

My fave Sterling call..."Bernie goes BOOM!!"

Still working my way into baseball mode, but the Yanks look much improved so far. While I don't expect Volpe to hit 350 for the season, he seems much more comfortable at the plate. Juan Soto has exceeded my expectations, both as a hitter and a teammate. Hope the pitching stays healthy and it could be an interesting season.

.-.
I'm getting the feels.

Sign and lock up Soto. He's been in Cashmans head for years.
Without a question they should try to lock him up. I'm just not sure Boras has any desire to let this happen. He adamantly prefers using free agency as leverage, even if that leverage is entirely fabricated by Boras. This past winter exposed Boras a bit, although it won't apply to Soto.

I'm not overly concerned however as we a) will be competitive with our offer and b) I'm not sure anyone else will.

I'm not worried about the Mets landing him (the only thing the many NY sports radio hosts who all seem to be Met fans have to talk about) as the next time Cohen commits major dollars on a long term contract will be the first time.

That third inning last night against the Padres was impressive. Soto, Judge & Stanton all hit the stitching off the ball. I don't know how they measure these things as they had Stanton's ball "only" going 417, but all three were total blasts. While you don't expect all three guys to maintain this pace throughout the season, we're finally getting a glimpse of what Cashman must have envisioned when putting the roster together. Add in another strong start from the rotation and we may have a fun season on our hands.

The batting order is producing consistantly. Volpe hitting around .280 is a big improvement of last year. Soto, Judge, Stanton and Verdugo are making the lineup very difficult to the thru. Based on the last couple of seasons, I was not optimistic about Stanton. I guess I was wrong. Not to forget Trevino. Saw him hit two in one game in Tampa.

Those three blasts last night were crazy. Darvish got shell shocked!! In three plus weeks Judge as gone from hitting around .200 to around .280 and absolutley crushing the ball.

The pitching is a surprise and a concern. Gil and Rodon and Schmidt are leading the staff. Still not convinced on Stromen. Cortez should be fine. The bullpen I'm not sure on. Holmes is doing the job so far. Others I don't know. Cole being out is a big blow. Would be nice if he could come back. Not holding my breath.

Did she just get out of prison or something? What’s the big surprise? (I can’t stand A-Rod but he actually seems like a great father)

What exactly happened to Miguel Andujar? He just started playing for the A's. He had that amazing rookie year with the Yanks and then...

I think the league caught up to him and he's never been able to reach those early highs. Add in his defensive deficiency and there was no place to hide him. Yanks should have traded him while he had value.

Stanton's splits w/ runners in scoring position entering today's game:

.308, 3 HR, 20 RBI, 6 BB, 11 Ks, .975 OPS in 52 ABs, .

Tonight, Stanton added another RBI single and a walk w/ runners in scoring position.

In contrast, Stanton has 10 HRs in 118 ABs no one on base.

What does this mean? Stanton is doing a nice job simplifying his swing and not trying to do too much in clutch situations. If he can keep it up throughout the season and into the playoffs that would be a huge plus.

Anthony Rizzo, great guy. Ends there it’s absolutely time he is killing them in 5-6 slots and it’s not going to get better. Make a move, Judge will have to understand.

He’s looking like Jay Bruce up at the plate, gotten to a point where he just can’t see the baseball anymore. Lineup is so much different without Soto.

.-.
Judge and Stanton hit 900 feet of home fun in the 7th tonight. Total bombs. I still don't have total confidence in Stroman, but he's been steady Eddie all season.

What the heck happened to him? He started out strong last year..got hurt…struggled. He was supposed to be healthy this year.

Is he still having concussionn issues…or is he just showing his age?

I mean he hasn't hit over 240 in many years. He's regressing for sure but his best year here he hit 224 (I know average isn't everything...) and he's hitting 220 this year with less power. Not sure why people are so surprised.

I don't watch Yankees games, but I have to wonder if he's no longer standing on top of the plate. I watched him for years with the Cubs. I noticed over past 1.5 seasons (almost 700 PAs) he's only been HBP 18 times and he used to clear 20+ in a regular season. Maybe he's moved back and can't hit the outside pitch or get around on inside low like he used to.

you are correct…I honestly didn’t realize how long it’s been since he played a full season and hit for power and average. 2019 was his last good season.

To be honest….I didn’t realize how long he has been declining until I looked it up,

I’m not surprised at all, it’s time that’s all. He’s hiding is deficiencies behind some very hot hitting but the Yanks will need something from 1B eventually.

He still brings a lot to the table. I believe with a team like the Yankees his personality and presence far exceeds what he brings solely on the field. The Yankees have always had such a corporate and boring vibe and guys like Rizzo, Verdugo, Swisher, etc. are more important than their stats.

But Verdugo and Swisher could hit. His presence in the dugout is obvious and we know how much Judge likes him. But how long can it be basically just that?

for as long as they keep on winning... Once he becomes a true detriment then you make a change. But benching him now could have adverse effect I think.

He's also still a plus defender and with the way the offense has been rolling, the Yanks can afford to be patient. For now.

Here's a bit on Yankees' prospect Ben Rice, who was recently promoted to AAA. He was drafted as a catcher, but is playing more 1B this year, so Yahoo pegs him as a potential call-up to replace Rizzo's spot.

Rice has 35 homers, 20 steals and a .993 OPS with strong contact metrics (14% BB, 19.7% K) over his last 600 plate appearances.

Never ends, Judge hit on the hand or wrist going to guess it’s not good. Took himself out if he’s absent for a while will be painful. Can’t take much Grisham on O.
