He certainly has enough of a track record to show that he can get it done. But he was so putrid last season and came across as more than a bit of a tool. Yanks will need him to return to a top-of-the-rotation caliber pitcher if they want to contend in a loaded AL East.Reports look good for Rodon's velocity in spring training:
This time last year:
Now:
- 85-88 mph bullpen sessions
- 88-91 mph w/ highs of 92 mph in live batting practice
- 88-90 mph bullpen sessions
- 94-95 mph w/ highs of 97 mph in live batting practice

Gerrit Cole getting MRI on elbow in dire Yankees injury concern
The Yankees suddenly have a massive injury concern that could dramatically alter their 2024 season.nypost.com
Brian Cashman - "Hello, is Blake home?"
Gerrit Cole going for an MRI on his elbow today.
Out 1-2 months…well…it didn’t take long for the injury bug to hit this team…once again. Let’s hope the Cole injury isn’t serious.
since what we have heard is that there is a very real chance they only have Soto for one year, this feel like an all in year. You can’t be all in without Cole for two months. For now, Cole will avoid surgery, but is out 10-12 weeks, so

Gerrit Cole injury update: Yankees ace will not throw for 3-4 weeks due to elbow nerve inflammation, edema
The reigning Cy Young winner is hoping to avoid Tommy John surgerywww.cbssports.com
I've read that the Yankees have "checked in" on Michael Lorenzen and if the Yankees make an addition, I'd prefer a small short-term pickup like Lorenzen or Clevinger (my preference).
Snell to the Giants: 2Y, 62M w/ opt-out after first season, 32M guaranteed if he opts out after one season. I would have loved this deal for the Yankees, even with the draft pick attached.
Lorenzen to the Rangers: 1 year, 4.5M, 2.5M extra in performance bonuses. I would have been totally content with this deal.
My guy Clevinger is still on the market and now the Yankees "are back in contact" with Montgomery's camp AKA Boras, and "Montgomery’s camp compares him to Aaron Nola, who got $172 million over seven years."
We'll see.
Monty was good for us but not $20mil+ good. A tale as old as time, pitchers leaving NY and becoming CY Young…Montgomery to Arizona.
Here are the details:
“one-year, $25MM pact. The deal includes a $20MM vesting player option for the 2025 season, with Montgomery earning the ability to opt out if he starts at least ten games in 2024. Montgomery’s option will vest at $20MM if he makes ten starts, with an additional $2.5MM added to the option upon reaching 18 starts and 23 starts during the 2024 season.”
Hey, a solid Yankees trade!
Yankees acquire utility player Jon Berti in a three-team trade from the Marlins for minor-leaguer John Cruz (ranked as their 28th best prospect on MLB.com). Catcher Ben Rortvedt is going to the Rays.
Played 15+ games last season at SS (64 games), 3B (41 games) and LF and 2B.
A high-contact hitter (77 Ks and 29 BBs in 424 PAs) and good speed.
Berti makes 3.6M this season and has arbitration rights next season.
Fills the "Isaiah Kiner-Falefa" role as a guy who can play pretty much anywhere in the field.
Brubaker will be useful, but don't think of him as more than a #5 with #4 upside. I was initially surprised Bucs would let him go, but looking at post-June, our rotation should look pretty damned good, barring more than one major injury. Keller, Skenes, Perez, Priester, Jones, will be the best rotation we've had in a decade. That the cheapo Bucs gave $550K in pool money would also suggest the PTBNL will be decent, not like when you were trying to foist Clint Frazier on us for the umpteenth time.Another quietly solid move by the Yankees:
Yankees acquire RHP JT Brubaker and 550k in international pool money for a "player to be named later".
Basically a salary dump with potential for upside as Brubaker is currently rehabbing from Tommy John and won't return until about July, making 2.3M this year and arbitration eligible next year.
More on Brubaker and his better-than-it-seems peripheral numbers.
