I was surprised by Tenn's defense on the last possession. Why put Williams on Mathis? I don't understand why Tenn allowed Mathis to drive to the basket against Williams when the trap had been pretty effective against her. That was just too easy.

Saw only the last 15 min. of the game (lucky me :) from what I read here) and actually it was a good game to watch. Johnson is a rebounding monster and TN did come back from 12 points down but some of it was becouse the offense of KY was horrible. The call against Striklen was a very bad call and should have been a no call. At this point it looks clear that there is a seperation in quality between the 4 top teams (Baylor, ND, UConn and Stanford) and the teams behind.

Yeah, losses by TN and the Terps helped Stanford tonight, but Stanford is still far from a shoo in.

They are very close to a shoo in. I think they have a very good chance of winning out.

The Rutgers win is their only good road game, but they only won by 6. Compare that to losses at Virginia and Kentucky, plus a 97-80 loss at Stanford. That's why I say they are not a good road team. They play much better at home.

So they would've won if they played Stanford at home?

I think Williams is the only perimeter player they could put on Mathis, although I might have tried Manning. Why no trap, I have no idea.

Of course they get a 1 seed if they win out. But I think they have been playing down to the competition lately, and that may cost them.

And even if they win out, if I were a Stanford fan I would be very nervous about the lack of competition before the NCAA tournament.

The problem is that the PAC is so abysmally weak, Stan is kind of running in place. They have no chance to earn quality points.

If a team goes on a strong run down the stretch, it has the chance to jump them.

No, but it might not have been a blowout.

This is flimsy evidence, even at best.

The Sagarin _average_ home court advantage is 4 points, which means an 8 pt swing whether you're home or away. I've seen nothing even remotely that would cause me to think TN has a greater gap than that.

Do they play better at home or is it the clock, the refs, .0002 etc....... Why is it Tenn is losing more games this season then last. They dont execute, no coaching, no leadership. They now have a point guard and are worse then they were. I dont care who they play they can find a way to lose. We'll see what happens at ND. I think its over before it starts. Im sure the attitudes are in the dump. On paper theyre great on the court they are under achieving by alot.

So we disagree. No surprise there, and I'm sure it won't be the last time.

Does anyone know why Taber Spani didn't play? I gather there is some sort of injury, but I don't know any details.

In a game this close, I'm sure that would have made a difference. Remember Baugh was not playing when they lost to Virginia.

I actually think there's pretty solid eyeball evidence that Tennessee languishes on the road this year more than the expected variance. They haven't just lost on the road; they've looked bad doing it. Yes, Nneka was terrific, but they looked just awful against Stanford. Losing to Virginia is inexcusable. Even though they eeked out a win against Rutgers, that game told me more about Rutgers than it did about Tennessee (i.e., Rutgers is not a significant threat to any of the top teams). And then there was tonight, where it's not like Kentucky put together a command performance or anything to beat them.

Meanwhile, I thought they looked very spritited and pretty good even in defeat to Baylor and pretty dangerous early in the season against Miami. I think young players are more affected by home vs. road crowds (as well as the effects of travel and being out of normal routine), and they do have a very young backcourt. And since the backcourt is the engine that powers an offense in general, that can be a real issue.

Overall, I'm starting to think this incarnation of the LVs is indeed a little worse than last season's. Although Massengale may be a true PG, she's a freshman and is going to be inconsistent. They can't seem to keep everyone healthy simultaneously (and indeed, you can point to Spani being out as a factor that could have swung this game in their favor had she been able to play). Meanwhile, the coaching-by-committee approach sounds good in theory, but in practice, this team desperately needs the vintage Pat Summitt. I truly hope that Pat is finding joy and staying grounded by continuing to coach, but she was clearly more effective as the hard-nosed, focused competitor than she is as more of a symbolic inspiration.

Still a lot of season to be played, but last year, Tennessee eeked out a tough game against UK on the road. This year, they barely lost. Yes UK is somewhat better, but I have to conclude that at minimum Tennessee is only as good as they were a season ago...which wasn't near good enough.

Too much parity between Maryland, Duke, Miami, Kentucky and Tennessee for any of them to have less than 3 losses and that won't overtake Stanford if they win out.

IMO, the ONLY way Stanford isn't a 1 seed is either if they lose, or if Duke runs the table and wins the ACC. i get that Stanford has a weak schedule. but they blew out tennessee by 17 - almost putting up a C-note on them. with Maryland losing tonite, and the ACC most likely beating each other up, there won't be another team outside the top 4 with less than 3 losses, notwithstanding teams like Deleware or Wisc Green bay, who play practically no one.

I, also, think even though it is wrong the committee will feel pressure to make Stanford a #1 seed as a west coast team and the past three years success.

Right now I would say the #1 seeds will be Baylor, Notre Dame, UCONN, and Stanford. Things can change, but for now thats my best guess.

I tuned into the game on ESPN3 with about 5 minutes left in the first half. The entire front line of Baugh, Johnson, and Stricklen was on the bench huffing and puffing. I have never seen them as a superbly conditioned team, but this was really an eye opener.

I think they'll stay in top ten. They can, and will drop behind KY. But RU is behind them and TN beat them at the RAC, so it would be tough to move them below RU. TAMU is behind them in the coaches poll but just lost, so no way do they fall below TAMU. TT is behind them in the AP, but just lost, so no way do they fall below them.

If your point is that they don't look like a top ten team, um, maybe, but I don't see any way they can drop five positions in the AP or 4 in the ESPN poll with a one point road loss to a top ten team.

This senior group for Tennessee has always been a problem for Pat, even two years ago when there were no discernible symptoms of her illness. Lot's of All-Americans, but no cohesion. It's continued year after year. Sure there have been devastating injuries, But the group has surely underachieved and the addition of chucker Simmons and even a worthy point guard in Ms. M have not straightened out the psyche of this team.

My point in all this is not to belittle the Vols. They have had a great program and will again but that similar problems occur elsewhere. sometimes the beast coaching fails to achieve the desired results and yes, that could even occur here...Is it even remotely possible that we are seeing a bit of it here with regard our season.

We've lost two crucial games that we were in a position to win, several of our better players are performing at a level slightly below what "our" expectations were for them (I'm not sure this is relevant). The reason why I picked Notre Dame to win was a feeling that they had a better grasp of who they were and could express that on the court in crunch time and they did.

This season has a long way to go. And our talent and the brains of the coaching staff may very well prevail.

But don't think that this problem is Tennessee's alone. It could happen anywhere, including here.

Gonna be some movement in the 5 to 10 range. My guess....1 Baylor, 2 ND, 3 CT, 4 Stanford, 5 Duke, 6 Kentucky 7 Maryland, 8 Tennessee, 9 Rutgers, 10 Miami.
