More thoughts...
  • Reminds me A LOT of Kadary Richmond. Tough and has some playground to his game... Not a superior athlete, but his size is a major asset. Improving as a shooter quickly.
  • I really wish he didn't spend so much time on mid-range post ups and mid-range shots. That's a weird stylistic choice by his HS coach. Just turn those same shots a couple more feet out and you have a wayyyy more effecient player.
  • I count 18 points 6 assists in this one.

Seems to have a little Jalen Adams and James Bouknight in his game. Not a bad combo.

From his AAU season... Interesting how Jakai Newton seems to get all the love, when Castle is the higher ranked player. AAU is practically meaningless, but the more recent videos seem to show him using some more strength and athleticism.

- Needs to get stronger finishing off two feet. He doesn't always elevate and catch the body. Does the Jalen Adams routine and tries to get acrobatic with his arms and torso.

- I count 9-11 points and 6 assists in this one.

Nice assist here
Jakai Newton is the next big thing ...we promise!! GA Stars 2023 EYBL vs ATL Xpress 2023 UAA.

  • Scored or assisted on his teams first 10 points.
  • Big fan of his catch and shoot. Much less so his off the dribble shooting.
  • Team went on a run with him in to start. Sat him and 1 other starter, and the other team went on a run... ballooned the lead back to 18pts as soon as he came back in.
  • Sat a bunch of the second half when they had a lead.
  • I count 10 points and 2 assists.

From the 247 article:

The head coach that he has the tightest relationship with will likely be the biggest winner in his sweepstakes. As of now, it looks as if things are working in the favor for the two programs that received official visits from him this fall."

Those two OV were Auburn and UConn this past weekend.

If anyone wants to read that article without the paywall locking it up here's a link.

“Really and truly, the biggest thing for Stephon was going there and being able to see the boys practice,” Quannette noted. “We went to other schools and haven’t had the ability to see the kids practice, so those were really, really big things for him. The campus was wonderful ... and just sitting down and speaking with Danny. He’s such an authentic coach. He’s really interested in Stephon’s recruitment and getting him to UConn. It was just a great experience all the way around.”

Thank you Hooper!

The Castle has been stormed. It's taken.

Who's next?

You'd think if it's us he won't actually wait until Thanksgiving. Hoping that's just a misdirection.

I’m stating the obvious, but this staff is very good at recruiting. There’s no ego involved, no one cares who gets the credit- they just focus on their targets and put forth tremendous effort.

Wherever Hurley’s been, they have had a few set priorities with these visits. They lay out the role they see for the player and have the kid see a practice, which are pretty standard. They are great at communicating with parents. Their practices are good- entertaining, focused, intense.

They also want the recruit to spend time with his potential future teammates away from the coaches. They want the current players to talk honestly about what it’s like playing for these coaches and in this program. Some coaches micro-manage this stuff; these coaches trust their guys and want them to be honest.

Let’s see how this goes…

Off-topic but I saw the trophy on the right and thought to myself "When did Auburn win a national championship??"

If you zoom in, it's their trophy for winning the Midwest Region and making it to the Final Four, LOL that's cute;)

Damn, rough time to make a post with him in an Auburn jersey. Heart dropped there for a second

His dad also tweeted a praying Emoji in regards to him playing here. Safe to say they sold the parents...

Can confirm recruits spend a ton of time with a few current players during their visits. I was still at Uconn when Andre had his visit and we saw him out at night with some of the team, that’s when I knew we were recruiting right.

Another video...

  • He hits ahead really well from what I've seen. We could use that skill to elevate the speed of our play.
  • Ended up sitting a bunch of this game because they had a huge lead
  • I really like his unselfishness. In a blowout he wasn't just abusing worse players--he fed his teammates for easy looks all game.
  • After the last couple videos I'm realizing he really is more of a 6'6 point guard than a combo in a lot of ways. We could be rolling out a lineup of 6'6-6'7-6'8-6'10-7'2 by the time he gets here potentially... that's crazy. Bigger than most NBA teams.
  • A little less athletic than the AAU videos might suggest. He doesn't get up like Rese, Andre, or Hawkins. Probably more of a Gaffney-level athlete. Good, not great.
  • Sat the whole 4th-quarter.
  • I count 6 points 7 assists in this one.
