Starting lineup for first game in November

Let's see the 5 v 5 practice squads. Whatever the line-up, the first 5 coming off the bench should beat many of our opponents, at least come March. There are always injuries and given some of the officiating, foul trouble.

ColeDigginsGaffney
GaffneyHawkinsTransfer
AJacksMartinTransfer
WhaleyAkokJohnson
SanogoSpringsJohnson

I think everyone sees the 3rd line as the most important right now. AJacks, Martin, Hawkins, Transfer . . . they will need 3 guys on the court at any given time who can hit the J.

Wow some of these takes are crazy. Best answer is wait and hope we land some impact players still minus the freshman. But two 5's in the lineup with Akok as a 3 and Martin as a 2? Who's going to handle the ball ever besides the PG, of which we don't have any great ones as the roster especially not knowing the impact of Diggins yet. And way too many Cole/Gaff believers. We will not be a very good team if this happens, I'm willing to eat crow if they make it work but for me this can't be the solution come November.

Oh and by the way where we finding anyone who was better than Whaley who is coming back? Gee I hope we do but to think that now is ridiculous. He will be in the lineup opening night.

Agree with the first part. As for Whaley, a healthy Akok is better than Whaley. It's not that close really. I love Whaley's hustle, effort, defense against non traditional centers and all of that. But he's not nearly as talented as Akok. He likely starts opening night, but I'm not convinced that continues.

Haven't seen an Akok that was better than last years Whaley at all yet. Freshman year he blocked some shots, so does Whaley. He made some shots, so does Whaley neither are great shooters at all. His defense was only ok, certainly not close to the same guy on the perimeter as Whaley on defense. Maybe finishes better but what did he average his freshman year. Is his ceiling higher, more than likely but we have yet to see it on the floor with any consistency. Obviously we hope he gets better after more than a year as well from his injury but to say it's not close is beyond ridiculous. Right now Whaley will give us more impact on the floor than Akok.

I think Freshman Akok and Junior Whaley were comparable. That means a lot of upside if Akok is 100% and finishing at the rim is a dire need. Right now Whaley's defense is the known value. Hopefully Akok gets back to 100% this summer and can focus on getting better.

Here is what I came up for the starting lineup for game one of the 2021-22 season in November

Guards
Rashool Diggins
Tyrese Martin

Forwards
Akok Akok

Center
Adama Sanogo
Samson Johnson

For the subs
Guard: Jordan Hawkins, Jalen Gaffney and RJ Cole
Forwards: Andre Jackson

Cole is not coming off the bench to start the season.

A realistic starting 5 would be Cole, Gaffney, Martin, Akok, and Sanogo.

R u for real or just trying to get replies..

If Jackson is our starting 3 we’re in trouble
If Jackson is doing anything but coming off the bench we are in trouble. Personally he is a great leaper who likes to make highlight passes but I haven't seen much else. Even his defense was slipping at the end of the year. I just don't see the hype in this guy unless he finds an offensive game.

.-.
Now that Isaiah Whaley is coming back I would start

Rashol Diggins
Jordan Hawkins
Isaiah Whaley
Akok Akok
Adama Sanogo

Tyrese Martin is not good at scoring. He would be better as a rebounder coming off the bench.

My starting lineup right now would be Cole, Gaffney/Hawkins, Martin, Whaley and Sanogo. I think unless we get a better SG that Gaffney will at least starting there at the beginning of the year with Hawkins about to take over that position by midseason is my hope. I see Jackson and Akok a first coming off the bench as I I think Whaley will work on his outside shot to make himself a viable offensive threat at the 4.

No way that is out starting lineup to begin the season with 2 freshmen and we would get killed off the dribble with Akok at the 3. He is more of 4. We need someone quicker at the 3.

Cole
Martin
Polley (assuming return)
Whaley
Sanogo

To assume the highest scorer that is returning will not be starting game 1 is absurd.

Agree on Cole but can't on the 2. I mean Bouk could handle, get to the rim and pass it and while I like Tyrese he can't be your 2nd best ball handler to start the game. We will need to sit and wait to see what happens. So many things can change - Gaff cold get better, Diggins could be the guy as could hawkins immediately. Transfer portal could light up.

Will be interesting nonetheless!

This could realistically be our rotation right? I'm pretty sure everyone up to 9 is guarenteed minutes to some extent. Also considering most teams don't normally go 10 deep, unless there's serious foul problems or injuries.

Cole(30)
Hawkins(25)
Jackson(30)
Whaley(25)
Sanogo(30)

6: Akok(25)
7/8: Martin/Polley(20)
9: Gaffney(15)

10: Diggins/Johnson/Springs

Aggressive prediction. I think we see three starting lineups over the course of the season.

Early:
Cole
Gaffney
Martin
Whaley
Sanogo

Mid:
Cole
Gaffney
Hawkins
Whaley
Sanogo

Late:
Cole
Gaffney
Hawkins
Akok
Sanogo

Jackson can’t play a total of 30 minutes in 2 games without collecting 10 fouls.

First game in November I'd have to say:

Cole
Gaffney
Martin
Whaley
Sanogo

I think the only possible change barring injuries/etc would be Jackson in for Gaffney or Martin

This lineup and caveat are spot on in my opinion. Not only is it likely to be our best lineup on opening night, but, even if Hawkins or Diggins prove to be "better" than Gaff or Martin or whomever by then, I think Hurley would defer to the upperclassmen for the starting job anyway. I think anyone except Sanogo can lose the starting job in the course of the season, but the onus is going to be on the young guns (and Akok) to come take it.

by January....

Cole
Hawkins
Jackson
Akok
Sanogo

We’re extremely deep next year. I think the 2021-2022 roster will surprise a lot of people. We’ll find a way to boost the shooting percentages with some offseason tuning.

How are people taking Whaley out of our starting 5? He was Big East DPOY and the most impactful player on our team.
Depends on when they posted. I'm pretty sure my original lineup was suggested before I knew he was returning.

Jackson will 100% be a starter - doesn't matter who stays or which transfers come in.
I think that will depend on his tendency to foul. He can foul out of games in 12 to 15 minutes

Cole
Martin
Polley (assuming return)
Whaley
Sanogo

To assume the highest scorer that is returning will not be starting game 1 is absurd.

We need Gaffney and or Hawkins to play at all times.

We need one of the these 3 (Jackson, Hawkins, Gaffney) to be a 10-15ppg scorer in my opinion. I don't see Cole adding much because he is limited in size, quickness, etc. and Martin will always be a 10-12ppg guy based on his skillset. Someone else has to be a perimeter scorer or we will be playing a ton of 58-55 rock fight games all year.

But man, this thread is kind of depressing. There have been some putrid lineup combos posted. Hoping there is an impact two/three out there that can move right into the starting lineup. People were down on Locke, but he I think he would have been our two guard and leading scorer had he come.
