OT: St. Johns's MBB To Refrain from Postgame Handshake

His second comment is much more interesting. He wants the NBA to bring back hand checking. Too many 3’s in today’s game and not enough physicality. I agree. The physicality creates more drama. NBA ratings are down 28% this season per the article.
Sure, more whistles to stop play for free throw shooting. That’ll help

Handshakes between coaches could be entertaining. On top of being a terrible coach, I’m surprised Howard lasted 2 more years after this altercation

The NBA needs more than hand checking to slow the slide in ratings. It will get killed on what was its big day when the NFL kicks off on Christmas. It needs to think outside the box I think similar to what baseball has done. The stars are aging out and haven’t been replaced. They now have “stars” who play 30% of the games or something. They have “load management.” All leads to the conclusion that there are just too many meaningless regular season games. Players don’t care. Why should fans? I’d say make it harder to make the playoffs which means fewer not more teams. Maybe experiment with other radical changes. Eliminate the 3 except if a team is 10 points down. If a team misses 2 consecutive 3s the other team gets possession? Only 1 or 2 guys can shoot 3s. Give MORE points for a driving hoop and fewer for bombs? The 3 was supposed to be a more difficult shot. The league average was 36.6% last year.

As for Pitino and his no handshake nonsense, maybe he is just trying to protect opposing teams from STDs. Is he still hiring whores to hang out in the players dorm?
The NBA is now much, much more akin to a soap opera with a fashion show strapped to its back than a professional sports league.

The idea is that hand checking wouldn’t be called as a foul

No it's due to them making games harder to watch. You have to purchase multiple streaming services if you want to watch all the games and people are not going to do that.
No games have been added to any streaming service since last season. The new deal with Amazon starts next year.

Your parents talk to you about good manners, right and wrong, treating people with respect? Mine did and sometimes you do things to be civil and for good sportsmanship. Football, boxing, golf all do it.
Both teams gave it their all and one team fell short but a quick shake of the hands with the guys you’ve been at war with is a good thing IMO. It’s 10 seconds.
I guess some people want no civility and in a win celebrate it, leave and don’t acknowledge your opponent. In a loss just walk away crushed and angry.
The word has enough angry and hateful people. I can’t believe Pitino would want this. He is an arse.
If I were Hurley regardless of winning or losing I would line up our players and stand there. Let Pitino turn and just walk back to the locker room.
That's such a cute story.

First off, it's not a "war". It could be some non-conference game in October against Sacred Heart where you just won by 47.

Second, I am not sure it makes you "hateful" or "angry" to just go to the locker room, shower, dress and go home.

So I ask again. What difference does it really make either way?

I have to wonder if that is due to the standings:

Cavs are leading the east (and not with LeBron) - the Celtics are legit but the rest of the east is largely a mess.

In the West you have OKC/Memphis/Houston at the top - the Warriors are in 8th, the Lakers are 10th.

The product on the floor is interesting - but it is a star driven league. If they end up with a Cleveland/OKC final will anyone watch?

Im a huge NBA fan but they do need to:
1. expand the corner 3 so it’s the same distance from everywhere
2. Once the league goes to 32 teams just have a home and home round robin. That’s 62 games. cutting 20 games would help load management.
3. Get rid of the divisions they’re already meaningless.
4. With 20 fewer games start the season on Xmas day to avoid college football regular season.
5. Get rid of the all star game and replace with the nba cup finals. Keep dunk and 3pt contests.
Problems solved!

How do you make up the 25 percent loss of revenue with less games? Won’t ever happen
Adam silver recently said they are looking at
The impact of huge increase in 3 point shooting
On their product
The Nba has been very good at modifying
The game ,, how it’s referreed ,allowing zone etc
To maintain popularity
Also don’t see how conflict with college football
Has anything to do with nba viewership attendance
Or interest

Here in Japan, lots of sporting events end with bowing to each other from distance. It's quicker and there's no physical interaction.

Not saying American sports should switch, but you basically never see altercations at the end of games here.

You're assuming that Deepster actually had the parents. I think it's like 50-50 he may have been feral.
I didn't even have to logout to figure who said something, and I don't know what he said...my favorite cowardly tough guy.

You're quite gentlemanly add the pieces up to an even 100%, when you could have had a split that included mineral & vegetable.

. It’s less inventory but more inventory doesn’t automatically equal more money. the product itself would be much improved. I’m watching the tnt game right now and the magic don’t have their 2 best players it sucks. If ratings keep dropping the next tv deal is going down even if they add games. The nfl plays 17 games so 62 is plenty of inventory. There are currently nba games on Friday and Saturday nights that go head to head with college. Plus the more sports going on at the same time the harder it is to follow them all

This is very outside the box - a cornucopia of irresponsible spitballing that descends into a flat-footed joke. Build that brand!

You'll do anything to keep away from finishing that long list of all the coaches who could do what Dan Hurley had done up until 23 months or so ago.

You're writing like your dream come true would be a gimmicky "NewBA" that's a shadow of its former self and ripe for your non-stop complaining.

I would like the NBA to move on from Adam Silver.

I’ll play along on this one.

So what if they don’t shake hands? The players just fake it thru halfassed. Most of the times the coaches force some niceties and move on. Is it really sportsmanship? It’s like sitting at the Thanksgiving table, your aunt making you say what you’re thankful for and saying ”friends and family”.

Well I always think that there’s a small part of player that remembers he will see the other team in the handshake line at the end of the game.… Maybe that helps them from taking it to that next level of nasty.

Not in all cases but perhaps some?

I think same true in Hockey - again not all cases stop but maybe some.

Get rid of it and maybe it causes games to become a bit more nasty.

I think this is a sign of the times that instead of people being civil, it’s like let’s just stop doing it because it’s hard.

wah, wah….

I say we go with the curtsy. :)

I'm ringing my hands to this whole entire stupid topic. I think Pitino is so petty and always needs to bring attention to himself.

I couldn't care less about if they did or didn't have the hand shake line since it's not done in all sports. But of all people to go against this tradition, Pitino should shut his fat face. It's what is universally done in all levels of college basketball, so why bother change it. It does demonstrate good sportsmanship. Pitino is an ass! He can't help but try to be the story. It should be about his team, his players, or the school he represents. He can't help but be self-serving.

I think the after game handshakes are stupid. But what is more dumb is the handshakes after free throws. Why are players handshaking a guy after a free throw? If he makes it or not. Even more dumb, when a guy has three free throws, they shake hands twice. Just lame.

Did I hear it correct in the Celtics/Bulls game last night? 75 “missed” threes between the 2 of them. Oh yeah that’s fun to watch lol. NBA is bad the in season tourney final was awful too. Trouble in paradise.

He doesn't want Danny recruiting his guys in line.

"Good game. Oh and by the way, you have the heart of a Buffalo and I love that..."

I've always thought it was kind of stupid to expect the losing players to shake hands with the winners. Just let them go home.
Is it? Or is it stupid that some players can’t lose a game without the need to exhibit poor character?

The fact this is even a conversation is sad. Win or lose, you shake hands, walk off and get ready to play another day. Not difficult unless you let it become difficult.

He’s a good coach whose team plays 8 games in a large high school gym. Tapping into the inferiority psychology of us vs them to increase effort and motivation.
His team is good this year but has been fairly irrelevant for a long time. They are going to be a tough out when we play them but the not doing the 10 second “good game” walk by is dumb.

I have no problem with this. It is an artificial gesture. Let the organic handshakes happen as the game ends, or not, and call it a day
Bench players been waiting all game to put hands on their opponents, and you want to take that one and only opportunity away?

In 30 years of coaching I saw far more poor conduct from players on the winning team than from the losing team.

IIRC, Rick was also the first coach to bring his team onto chairs on the court instead of gathering on the bench during time outs.
Now, that's a regular thing but at the time it was seen as heinous paranoia.

Rick has never been shy about himself.
