OT: St. Johns's MBB To Refrain from Postgame Handshake

I'm ringing my hands to this whole entire stupid topic. I think Pitino is so petty and always needs to bring attention to himself.

I couldn't care less about if they did or didn't have the hand shake line since it's not done in all sports. But of all people to go against this tradition, Pitino should shut his fat face. It's what is universally done in all levels of college basketball, so why bother change it. It does demonstrate good sportsmanship. Pitino is an ass! He can't help but try to be the story. It should be about his team, his players, or the school he represents. He can't help but be self-serving.

I think the after game handshakes are stupid. But what is more dumb is the handshakes after free throws. Why are players handshaking a guy after a free throw? If he makes it or not. Even more dumb, when a guy has three free throws, they shake hands twice. Just lame.

How do you make up the 25 percent loss of revenue with less games? Won’t ever happen
Adam silver recently said they are looking at
The impact of huge increase in 3 point shooting
On their product
The Nba has been very good at modifying
The game ,, how it’s referreed ,allowing zone etc
To maintain popularity
Also don’t see how conflict with college football
Has anything to do with nba viewership attendance
Or interest

Did I hear it correct in the Celtics/Bulls game last night? 75 “missed” threes between the 2 of them. Oh yeah that’s fun to watch lol. NBA is bad the in season tourney final was awful too. Trouble in paradise.

I've always thought it was kind of stupid to expect the losing players to shake hands with the winners. Just let them go home.
Is it? Or is it stupid that some players can’t lose a game without the need to exhibit poor character?

The fact this is even a conversation is sad. Win or lose, you shake hands, walk off and get ready to play another day. Not difficult unless you let it become difficult.

He’s a good coach whose team plays 8 games in a large high school gym. Tapping into the inferiority psychology of us vs them to increase effort and motivation.
His team is good this year but has been fairly irrelevant for a long time. They are going to be a tough out when we play them but the not doing the 10 second “good game” walk by is dumb.

I have no problem with this. It is an artificial gesture. Let the organic handshakes happen as the game ends, or not, and call it a day
Bench players been waiting all game to put hands on their opponents, and you want to take that one and only opportunity away?

In 30 years of coaching I saw far more poor conduct from players on the winning team than from the losing team.

IIRC, Rick was also the first coach to bring his team onto chairs on the court instead of gathering on the bench during time outs.
Now, that's a regular thing but at the time it was seen as heinous paranoia.

Rick has never been shy about himself.

I think all schools should do this. Too many bad incidents. Just do a team wave or turn as a team and applaud the opponent at the end. I played baseball and we never shook hands.

. It’s less inventory but more inventory doesn’t automatically equal more money. the product itself would be much improved. I’m watching the tnt game right now and the magic don’t have their 2 best players it sucks. If ratings keep dropping the next tv deal is going down even if they add games. The nfl plays 17 games so 62 is plenty of inventory. There are currently nba games on Friday and Saturday nights that go head to head with college. Plus the more sports going on at the same time the harder it is to follow them all
82 down to 62? Too big of a difference, what about the record books?

Maybe 76 I could see.... 4 conferences of 8 teams - home and home with everyone is 62 as you said and an extra 2 games with 7 conference mates is 76.

6 fewer games won’t make a difference. Needs to be a significant reduction so every game matters in order to fix load management. By sitting out all these games players are telling us they don’t care about the record books

One of the few things I'm old school about is handshake lines. Should be mandatory.

This is very outside the box - a cornucopia of irresponsible spitballing that descends into a flat-footed joke. Build that brand!

You'll do anything to keep away from finishing that long list of all the coaches who could do what Dan Hurley had done up until 23 months or so ago.

You're writing like your dream come true would be a gimmicky "NewBA" that's a shadow of its former self and ripe for your non-stop complaining.
Baseball now puts a man on 2nd in extra innings, has a pitch clock and apparently discussing the “golden bat” to let you move your best hitter out of order. The NFL has revised the kickoff rule to a way that is unrecognizable and moved the pat back from the 3 to the 30. Silver’s solution is to do funky looking courts and schedule a tournament that even the players don’t much care about. Gonna take more than that. I’m not saying my ideas are great but neither are Silver’s. At least I’m trying to address the problem. He is trying to pretend it can be solved with sleight of hand.

yes Prince, most common courtesies are "artificial gestures". Point of fact, good manners are "artificial gestures". I am so glad I am middle aged. I would hate to grow up with this freaking generation.

I genuinely like this post, and wish happy, joyous, and meaningful holidays for you and those with whom you share them.

With rare, idiosyncratic exceptions I'm basically not going to watch NBA, MLB, or NFL games until there are no more than 8 teams left in the playoffs, sometimes 4, occasionally 2...no matter what changes are made.

Each year, I ask well-chosen friends to give me rule updates. Some I like, most I think are dumb, and none of them get me to watch more. I figure that the leagues & I have made peace that my boyhood self isn't coming back anytime soon.

I feel blessed to have watched the Islanders regularly throughout the regular season and Stanley Cup victories in 1981, '82, and '83. I still lived in CT in 1980, and also saw them lose in the Conference Championships in '84, before I no longer worked for a generous employer with season tickets. Before and after that, I found that I can't follow hockey on TV, so it doesn't interest me. As such, NHL doesn't count for me. If any rules have changed in the past 40 years, I have no clue.

Why?
I can‘t speak for 429, but for me its about keeping a tradition founded on sportsmanship, and respect for your opponent. (all those things we say sports are supposed to teach people)

Its way easier to destroy a tradition than it is to create one, and little by little society just gets courser and courser. (look at the internet where there are no old traditions)

Sort of why you say please, and thank you. Is it really necessary when asking for something as simple as passing the salt? No, but it just makes the world go a little smoother.

Baseball doesn’t have a handshake line.

Is there no respect there?
