Do they do it in college baseball? I think that's a better comparison. I haven't been to a college baseball game in a long time so I'm not sure.

I‘m sure there is, but I‘m also sure where it exists its the result of prior coaches, and other adults emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship. I dont think it just organically happens.

So when you have an established tradition that emphasizes the right things, why kill it just because other sports don’t have the same tradition?

Should we get rid of the band and cheerleaders because baseball doesnt have them?

I think the Big East tradition is a handshake line after the game. Surprised by Pitino.

Not sure I‘d go quite that far, but I’ll concede that on the continuum extending from nun to stripper, the professional cheerleader would be closer to the latter.

If they went away tomorrow I don‘t think anyone would care. Ditto all the lights lasers, and piped in sound system.
 
These college cheerleaders are not the Dallas Cowboys cheerleader if you have checked lately. They are inclusive of all body types, types that would never get on a pro team so they are not sexist. For grumpy old bastards out there it’s called school spirit. The kids like it. YOU don’t like it? Too bad.
Look, this whole thing can be summed up succinctly. There are 350 college teams and all US high school basketball teams that do the handshake line. Case closed. And…….Pitino is looking for controversy and an edge for his team In a nutshell. He is also a POS.

What schools are you talking about? I watch a ton of college sports and I'm not seeing this all inclusive body type thing with the cheerleaders. Northeast schools aren't up to par with ASU and Georgia but they still look like cheerleaders.

It’s pretty clear that we are wasting our time trying to explain to you why good sportsmanship and doing something decent at game end is done by the entire country.
And now at the end of the game the coaches won’t shake hands either?

The head of St. John’s is Rev. Brian J. Shanley O.P. a member of the Dominican Order of Preachers. Pitino was hired above many objections when he was absolved of his past basketball “sins” by Shanley to get the job. I don’t expect anything from him in this because Rick drives the bus and winning is all that matters, but we’ll see.
 
I didn't follow what "problems" they were having in the handshake line, but how about that being part of what you're teaching kids? How about teaching your kids to have some self control after the game is over? So instead the lesson is... since you guys have to act like balloon knots, I'm going to take you out of situations where you have to control yourselves? What a joke.

This is my exact take, too. So what? Why do they even have the shaking hands after the game is over? Like you stated it's so half assed and players are sticking their hands out and not even looking at the opposing player that slaps the hand, but rather straight ahead into space.

The only times I recall in recent memory where the players actually legitimately speak to each other and care to have a conversation, oddly enough because of the title of this thread, is when St. John's and Seton Hall do it. I think that is because before Pitino SJU and SHU recruited above mid tier players, but not highly rranked players within the top 50 players primarily from the NYC metro area and that those players knew each other very well from the AAU and Elite basketball circuits.

If we decide to just by pass any modicum of sportsmanship, then we won’t even have “feigned” sportsmanship. Let’s just let the little league players shout obscenities at the other team. Because why should a 11 year old who is crying because his /her team just lost the championship go shake the winners hand. What lesson could possibly be learned by facing adversity and overcoming it and moving forward. That has no value at all.

While we’re at it let’s just stop saying thank you. Because we all know when people say it after a meaningless transaction it is just feigned anyway. We don’t care that the server brought us our food it’s their job for goodness sake.

Let’s also stop holding doors for physically challenged persons or women. And helping the old woman across the street yeah that’s a waste of time.

Glad I won’t be around to see what happens when we decide to completely disregard anyone we want to when we want to because it’s all bs anyway.

Exactly. If anything - Pitino is a genius for this. He is the only one trying to stir the pot and create some controversy/storyline.

We need more of that from other coaches, not less.

You're making leaps that you can't prove are true.

If you remove the postgame handshake, there's absolutely nothing that connects that move to little leaguers yelling at each other. You're the one making that very, very subjective leap. I could easily say that your I find your post offensive to me (subjective opinion) and if you continue to post like this, we'll be murdering each other in the streets.
 
It's Pitino being Pitino, just like when he was calling for a 20 team league.

Sportsmanship shouldn't be discouraged, and when players act up, that's on the coach. And if Rick doesn't like teams shaking hands after the game, how about before?

That’s really is funny.

The point I am making is every youth sport I have coached in made it mandatory to shake the other team’s hand at the end of the game. If you make it about the competition and respect for those you are competing against you are right there is no way to prove that it is an healthier approach. My experience is that it works well as a teaching tool on how to carry yourself in life. Give respect get respect kind of thing. But that can’t be proven right.

From my experience when actually being in the arena competing it is best to accept the loss learn from it and move on.

Now I have seen in some cases the kids handle losses better than the parents and that it always a great learning experience.

Watching a big 11 yr old kid get between his mother and another parent to stop a fight. Because there is no handshake line for the parents who all think their kid is the next Willie Mays.

As for your first line “you can’t prove are true” you are correct. The tool used to measure that is currently being used to measure Christmas spirit.

Not sure exactly where the BY ranks in that area.

And you can't prove there isn't any benefit learned in sports by having to shake someone's hand at the end. You're stating your opinion that it's a useless tradition like everybody else as if you're not the pot yelling at everybody you think is a kettle

The Lakers are in 5th place now. There are a lot of good teams in the West. The East is pretty bad. The 6 seed in the East wouldn’t be in the playoffs in the West. Well they would be in the last play-in spot. 10th. And I think a lot of you are misremembering horrible 90s basketball. Especially the Knicks. All the holding, grabbing and fouling was unwatchable. Nobody wants to watch 83-79 NBA games. The league got watered down by expansion which lead to it. Larry Bird said it 15-20 years ago
