It's speculation but we have kids saying that it was a factor.

who?

I remember 3 recruits decommitting in Ollies tenure.

Prince Ali
MAL
and
Turtle Jackson. I think we didnt really want turtle anyway.

So unless you can show me MAL and Prince saying that not being coddled was a factor in their decommitting I think its probably hogwash.

I may be missing a decommit, but none but those 3 come off the top of my head.

Zach Brown - though not sure as to the level of non-coddling that occurred with him vs. his own personal issues being the problem

That one was mutual.

Also onsidering the kid is now a Transvestite in jail and after not staying in high school because of fighting, its hard to hold Ollie accountable there.

I think some poster said he wishes we landed that kid. I hope it was a joke. We dodged a bullet. If he wants to live his life as a woman, I don't care. He came from a tough neighborhood/background, I wish him the best, but I don't think he was built for D1 basketball mentally.

It's tough growing up poor, black, gay/transgendered (especially in the black community), even being a 7 footer means he can't "hide" in the crowd. Everyone has obstacles, but it's fair to say he'll have to overcome more than most. Hopefully he gets the help/guidance/therapy he needs and turns his life around.

If kids weren't worried (rightly) that KO would be fired, he might have landed Bamba. The unsuccessful seasons created a death spiral for KO that would have been nearly impossible to pull out of: bad seasons lead to players thinking he may not be there long, a dearth of talent coming in leading to more bad seasons...

Not speaking to anyone specific, but....there was a lot of doe being thrown around out there too.

.-.
Maybe there's still some merit to it, but at the same time, how much coddling do these kids need? Especially when everyone is in-season.

A lot of coddling. Kids seem a bit more wishy-washy about their decisions these days. And in the world of SM, vanity and ego stroking rules all. Furthermore, nobody resepectfully backs off and stops recruiting kids any longer. Social media and txting etc allows other coaches to pump your recruits til the bell. Gotta stay on it.

Not @whaler11 . He wants it to drag on, bankrupt the school and the state, and expose the administration as corrupt and incompetent.

I do find myself rooting for KO because I don’t want them to be rewarded for their lame end around and avoid responsibility.

They are corrupt and incompetent - y’all will slowly realize it just like y’all did on Diaco and Ollie.

Herbst tied herself to him a few years ago and now he’s the scapegoat.

.-.
If Ollie had spend more time following up on committed recruits, we wouldn't have lost them, which would have resulted for less need for taking the best available grad transfers, which would have resulted in more wins, which mean he would have kept his job.

Which would have only masked all his other deficiencies. We are in a much better place as a program now. I will gladly trade the last couple of really bad seasons for a much better long term future. Even the most steadfast Ollie supporters have to realize that the program is in a better spot now.

Stop being mad on the internet.

.-.
Umm there isn’t anything angry about that post. I admitted I am pulling for Ollie somewhat in the dispute.

Thoughts and prayers. You are a lost cause.

I guess I was proven wrong in that I didn’t think people were stupid enough to cheer on their end around while ignoring they created the situation.

I promise I’ll never underestimate your stupidity again.

Sorry not everyone has a room temp IQ. Feel free to apply your stupid rules elsewhere.

Oh good another mouth breather who wants to celebrate their ignorance.

It’s a country moran jamboroo.

You are the stupidest person here. Quite an honor.

You are the definition of mad on the internet.

You are the definition of mad on the internet.

Mocking =/= mad. Most of the replies I get make me laugh since 90% of it is attacking me or designing strawmen.

Like when I called to drop every program that isn’t profitable - nailed it!

I'll admit that I find myself somewhat torn, in that I want what's best for the school and the basketball program, but I don't want to see Ollie get screwed. But I also love having the good yet underestimated and unpopular side of a legal argument, and for many of the reasons on which you and I probably agree, I think that's where Ollie is.

I'm also torn in the sense that I think that there was a lot of what Ollie had to deal with that was a much, much different world than the one in which Calhoun had played for the preceding decades, most of which was out of Ollie's control; but I am upset with Ollie, too, for doing so poorly on the things he could control for the past two seasons.

You and I both know that poor performance/results is what brought us to where we are now, but they are using the NCAA stuff as the reason for the termination in hopes of avoiding paying him what the contract would have required if they simply wanted to make the change based on performance.

.-.
I'm sure. But the effort required depends on your own tolerance. If you are a germ-o-phobe, you can't complain about cleaning all the time. Tolerate some germs and life becomes manageable. That board doesn't have to be all rainbows and unicorns. It doesn't have to be filled with nothing but "good fans" and "good sports". I mean, accept that there are different strokes and manage the manageable.
You aren’t going to let it go, huh?

There’s a reason it’s rainbows and unicorns there. The majority of fans are over 60 (well over 60 - see the census) and they basically see the players as surrogate granddaughters. They may not know a lot about basketball and they don’t know a zone from a hand check but they love “our girls”. Many people on the women’s board are ailing physically, many are bedridden or hospitalized, and they find watching the women’s team to be fun and joyful. Until they get to the Boneyard and read how badly the team played in its 30 point road win, that is.

There’s an older gentlemen who emails me when he goes back into the hospital, which has been more recent lately. He’s lonely and scared but watching the women’s team makes him happy for a while. He was very upset in a recent email, asking why people are so hard on the players. I get that a lot when lurkers talk to me at games, too. They’re afraid to post because some posters really need to let these lurkers know they’re idiots or that they don’t know anything about the game. Most of the know it alls have drifted over from the men’s board, including you and @Tenspro2002 , and that seems to have increased this season. Most roll their eyes at the women’s board culture, I’m aware, but they manage to post just fine without scaring some 70 year old back into lurking. Some just carry on like they’re on the men’s board.

The men’s board is a chat room to discuss basketball; the women’s board has a large community of people hanging out with others like them. You may have noticed threads where these guys talk about seeing Red Auerbach play or their WWII, Korean, or Vietnam Nam war time memories. These guys want the community and friendships, not a hardcore analysis of why Stevens’ defense is bad. They don’t wail and moan if UConn doesn’t cover the point spread (and wasn’t that a fun thread?) and they don’t need perfection.

Sure, there are 30-40 or so guys that want to just talk basketball but it’s a tiny minority of the board. You guys that want to bring the men’s board culture into the women’s board - it isn’t going to work. You’re always going to get pushback and I’m always going to protect my frail constituency. I know I’ll get the mocking and blah blah blah but, whatever. You wanted an answer and now you’ve got one.

That's a cute narrative. Unfortunately Ollie shouldn't be rewarded for not doing his job. Both sides are at fault. They should meet in the middle. If you are hoping for Ollie to get his full buyout you are clueless and not a fan of the program.

Seriously not being dick.

Thanks for this. Puts things in a lot better context.

Maybe copy and paste this (or some less personal version of this) into a pinned post for the new people.

Great post. Thank you for your service to this board.

You're right that I follow the women's team with the same eye (and level of scrutiny) with which I follow the men's team. And, frankly, the fact that the men's team has been a dumpster fire for 2 years, and underwhelming for 4, has increased my interest and attention to the women's team on a day to day basis.

You've kind of been beating around the bush in other threads, and I appreciate that you've come out here and said it quite straightforwardly, and I mean this with no sarcasm or snark: You want the women's board to be a place where (mostly old) people can cheerlead for their girls. That's fine, and I don't begrudge that* as long as there is also a venue for discussing basketball as we would discuss any other sport, men's or women's.

How do we allow there to be a place for serious discussion of basketball (yes, including flaws) on the women's board?

*you'll note that I never attack other posters or impugn their basketball knowledge on the women's board
