Just wanted to discuss the importance of Sid next year. He’s really the only true 6’6/7 athletic wing on the team next year in a conference that is loaded with these types of players, even if he’s not starting we’re going to need him to play a lot of minutes just based on matchups. He showed us sparks last year, especially on the defensive end, but in my opinion is imperative that he improves all facets of his game and becomes more consistent next year. An improved Sid could be the difference for us. Very important piece.

Judging by last year he is more athlete than basketball player. At times, he looked very lost. But you can see the potential.

Nothing is preventing him from making a big jump. A year in the system should have helped. And almost every area of his game can be improved. However, if his shooting improves, we can live with the rest of it.

“This year is a good year for Sid to really understand what it is, and the work that he’s got to do, physically on his body, and obviously his offensive skills, to develop a game at that end of the court,” Hurley said on Wednesday at the UConn Coaches’ Road Show’s second stop at Stony Creek Brewery. “Sid’s got big upside, he’s got a chance to be a great player for us. It’s a big summer for him to develop. This is a big season for him, kind of in a similar way with Josh and Tyler, just to be better and show improvement.”

He didn't seem to have any "go to" moves last year. A guy that athletic and not either a monster size or super shooter would seem (to me anyway) to have developed a few moves he would go to and be good at. He seemed uncomfortable on anything other than dunks. Just develop a short/mid range shot and do a lot of cutting and that would cause a lot of havoc. Need to be able to finish close to basket without dunking if it isn't there (reverses, off backboard, etc.).
Reminds me (think someone mentioned this a while ago) of that athletic kid who transferred to USC a few years ago. Always thought he would be better than he ever ended up. Kind of like expecting Taliek to shoot better because he got to watch Ben Gordon every day and just had to copy what Ben did..

.-.
Has he been spotted in any of these Instagram workouts? I’m not sure and that is a big concern.

A little more than a few years ago, Marcus Johnson transferred to USC 13 years ago.

He can’t be worse than he was last year so there is nowhere to go but up I suppose. He looked like a project which was jarring since almost everyone thought he would be one of our best players.
He can hit the three, and might be the best finisher we have. Where he is a liability is on defense.

Some players are on campus right now, others aren’t. Sid is one who isn’t, along with most of the team, so not concerning to me. They’ll all be back in a week and a half. Hurley seems to have a good feel for Sid and his strengths and needs. That’s a plus for his development, now they all (coaches and Sid) have to put in the work.

This is a pretty fair assessment:

“He brings the ability to make game-changing plays — a weak-side block, a tip dunk, getting in the passing lane,” Hurley noted. “Those are critical. To have players that can steal points athletically is a huge asset. It’s developing some nuance in his game, developing that skill-set (that needs work).”

Hurley was asked about Wilson’s work ethic.
“It’s getting there. It’s getting there,” the coach said. “Sid had a great spring, he’s got to follow that up with a great summer. The same way that Josh and Tyler, in particular, had a great summer and spring last year ... Sid’s got to keep that commitment to the game at a high level (and have) the mental toughness to fight through the season as he’s still a developing player.”

He reminds me of Stix. Freak athlete with low b-ball iq at this stage in his career. Still lots of time to put it together, starting this season.

Sticks IQ wasn't that bad at all throughout his career. His concentration level as well as his play may have been inconsistent but I always felt he had a nice idea on both ends. I would be happy if Sid comes close.

His defensive potential is through the roof. And he’s already had flashes

Maybe blocking shots but being where he's supposed to he was scary. I can't tell you how many times his back was to a player who was either passing to his guy or had taken his own guy and flashed by Sid without any knowledge. That is a huge requirement on him to be on the floor more.

Sticks might have been the most athletic player EVER on the Huskies. He could jump out of the gym. He could fly. Yes, I know that Scotty Burrell was an amazing athlete and a much better basketball player. But Sticks was a fast twitch fiber disguised as a human.

Well, he occasionally hit the three, but I'd take the under if your betting line is 35%.

Sid Wilson is a horrendous shooter, no argument to be had at this point. He is an explosive leaper and can get some things done in close boarding and putting back, blocking shots and such. He is a crappy defender in general. This was what he was at season end. We’ll see if he’s anything different this year but I don’t believe in summer miracles anymore. Even at that he can contribute to the team because of our black hole of needs at his position. We have no choice but to give him the minutes. Hope he takes advantage.

The one sentence I want hear from Hurley is Sid has been living in the gym
Effort is only effort, when it begins to hurt." Jose Ortega y Gasset

One thing that concerns me a little is his overall attitude. Like he seems like a nice fun loving kid that enjoys life and the game. But he doesn’t seem to take it seriously enough, like losing doesn’t seem to bother him enough for me. He doesn’t have the Hurley killer mentality. Maybe I’m being too harsh but I’m sure other people see it as well. For all the crap we give Whaley I see pictures of him on social media working out busting his ass nearly everyday. Like he knows his back is against the wall. Like you’re playing for one of the most storied programs in collegiate basketball history, losing and not playing well should bother you.

I can't call him a wing since he has no perimeter skills: he can't dribble, pass, or shoot. He needs to be an undersized hustle/garbage 4-man.

He was so bad last year that he wouldn't have been in the rotation on a decent team.
- He shot .349 from the floor (including .396 inside the arc)
- He shot .229 from three
- In 489 minutes of playing time he had: 7 assists, 8 steals, 20 blocks, 69 rebounds

Seven assists in 489 minutes! Per 40, that was tied for last on the team with Yakwe.

Not encouraging given the lower talent level of our conference. Hurley has his work cut out for him. Hopefully Sid can be a solid contributor his junior or senior year.

Sid will go as far and be as good as Sid's heart and desire take him
Just like Brimah went in one direction and Bazz went in another

Gtcam I honestly hope Sid has Amida’s passion and heart to be good. I don’t think he was any different from Bazz in desire but he wasn’t blessed with the natural abilities to improve all that much.

He’s going to get better.

Last season he was mostly lost and played afraid.

Hurley didn’t give him any confidence with refusing to play him at first. This probably hurt Sid’s confidence and play for last season but will help it this season. I want to see him take guys off the dribble. He was able to do that in prep school but obviously this is a different level.
I have to believe he’s working hard because he knows that he won’t play if he doesn’t.

He’s athletic, long, shoots with good form and has high twitch muscles which will be easier to help him develop strength

This man was the most athletic human being to ever don a UCONN jersey.

His put-back dunks were legendary.

Wilson was suspended for a game because he wasn’t putting in the work and then later for stuff that went down the season before. You don’t reward lack of effort with minutes, and he literally couldn’t play him at first. Sid did himself no favors early on. New coach, chance to prove yourself, and he just didn’t.
