My takeaway, this was a brutal cycle for Hurley and the staff in terms of evaluation. They whiffed completely on the point guard position because neither Mahaney or Nowell are good enough to play in games despite us having only 1 point guard who is now playing on one leg. I like Tarris but Hurley certainly doesn't seem enamored with him, the sophomores Hurley hyped up haven't been close to good enough outside of Solo, and the freshman wing Abraham can't ever get off the bench despite Ross and Jaylin's struggles.

Agreed with most of that, the only piece I don't agree with is Nowell and Abraham. I don't think it was reasonable to expect contributions from them this year. It's become a glaring issue that they can't contribute, but I pin that more on the misevaluation and failures of the sophomores and Mahaney than Nowell and Abraham. I still think Nowell can be a contributor here next year if he's willing to stick around, Abraham I think that's too far gone

Maybe it's just me but I'm not seeing anything close to what you're seeing with these guys. Abraham hasn't played outside of games against the cupcakes so I'll exclude him, but nothing I've seen from Nowell or Singare makes me think they're ready.

The NIL argument doesn't hold much weight when Mahaney is basically out of the rotation entirely. We're playing 15-20 minutes a game with no PG and Nowell is still not seeing the floor, that should answer the question about how ready he is.

This is not directed solely at you, but it's just bizarre how many posters here think Dan Hurley is just actively running a worse team out there to spite his freshman recruits. If any of them could help they'd be playing

Not sure what coaches are seeing or not seeing from Nowell and Abraham in practice, but some players are better game players than practice players. Would like to see Abraham get at least a few minutes to see what he does in a real game. Give him Ross’ 4-5 minutes a game.

Should have never got to this. The hack across McNeeley’s arms on his drive was way more egregious than the foul on Solo.

100% - that guy knocked the ball out with his forearm. Do we want to sit back now and look at all the potential bad calls against Seton Hall? Fouls were 15-15, free throws 21-16 us. Pretty even.

This refereeing stuff is madness.

If Nowell is so bad he can't get in this year with an injured Diarra and Mahaney, why should we expect an enormous jump in year 2 for a guy that is virtually getting 0 playing time?

Understand he was injured a decent amount but let him play more than 5 minutes and through mistakes to at least give him experience. Next year he'll have gone from maybe playing a total of 60 game minutes all season to having to play whatever, 20 or so a game unless Hurley finds another PG starter.

Not the case. I didn’t ever buy the 3pete nonsense. Too many guys to replace. I said we’d miss Newton and didn’t understand why people here showed him so little respect. But even given that, this game showed a lack of fundamentals. That, sonny, is coaching. The Athletic called it the worst loss ever by a defending champ. That is how bad this game was.

I’ve been a UConn fan going back to Dee Rowe. So I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly. This was beyond ugly.

All good there no issues. You have a real point and it’s true I just don’t think the refs are to blame in this one, I’ve been with you on others though.

Liam, AK, and Solo are all skilled even though AK and Solo are flawed. The point guard situation has exposed their flaws even more. Tarris is a skilled center but coach doesn't seem to be a fan of him. Hass is a dog who is clearly hurting pretty badly now. I have nothing to say about the rest of the players.

Agreed, we have some offensive skill, just not enough. IMO our biggest offensive issue is we just don’t have a PG and big that are capable of running a PnR that defenses really have to respect. That’s partially on Diarra for not being enough of a scoring threat or big enough to work the lob game and partially on the bigs for a whole host of reasons that leave each of them flawed in some big ways. We just aren’t able to draw help defenders and find open looks for guys like Solo and AK often enough.

Because we've seen a ton of guys make that year 2 jump under Dan Hurley, including Solo Ball this year. It would have been nice to get him some more game experience this year, but he was injured right after it became obvious Mahaney wasn't working, and by the time he was healthy we were at a point in the schedule where it wasn't feasible to get him experience

Does it make you feel better that you think we lost because of a ref? Like what is your point right now? To keep moaning on and on about the refs? Is there a conspiracy? Good lord.

Yeah, I didn’t see the foul at first because I was watching the front defender. Upon a second look I saw the back defender had both paws on him. So if you want to hear you’re right about that one, there yeah go.

That's kind of a bizarre line in the sand to draw when Hurley has recruited 3 PGs prior to Nowell out of HS in Gaffney, Diggins, and Castle. And the only one to come back to UConn for year 2 did improve in Jalen Gaffney. He played less minutes but was significantly more valuable and productive

A lot of question marks heading into next season but it seems we have one answer.

As for the rest of the roster. The biggest questions seem to be does that desperately needed large proven point guard become available in the portal? We'll be the best destination for that player.

Does AK come back for his senior season? It's his best option IMO.

Does Hurley think the two wing sophomores who didn't make the necessary jump in play this season will make the necessary jump next season?

Will Hurley upgrade the athleticism of the team through the portal bringing in athletic players who can play off the bounce?

Something I never considered until recently. Will Hurley be satisfied with a two headed big rotation of Tarris and Reibe? I get the sense Hurley isn't too happy with Reed's play and Karaban's comments after the loss yesterday have me questioning the entire roster.

Eh I don't know if Gaffney was that much better. I remember the fan base was very frustrated with him and he was inconsistent. Castle didn't play the PG spot for us (didn't have to). I think with Nowell this biggest detriment is the shoulder and then ankle injury took a lot of time he could have got to gain experience away. Hoping we do see a big jump from him next year.

It’d be best if we do our best to recruit every position, Ball would be utilized best as an off the bench scorer for 15 min a game.

Everything else we need drastic improvement.

The ideal scenario would have been Nowell to get some time backing up Diarra or Mahaney so that he at least has some game time experience to build on. He hasnt had any.

The lack of development in the sophomores, point guard depth issues after swinging and missing on Mahaney/Nowell, and over-reliance on Samson are the roster construction issues that keep coming up in these losses.

I wouldn’t consider Nowell a miss at this point , he wasn’t going to be an immediate starter.
