Seton HeII Post Game Thread

Fortunately I had plans today and couldn’t watch the game. Unfortunately I just watched a replay

Man, that sucked. Worst loss since Wagner/Northeastern?

If we were in the 7-9 seed range before, then we probably are on the bubble now. We may need to win out to avoid bid stealer territory..

Won’t pile on to any players because it’s all been said already and they’re all ashamed of that performance. But if that is what we’re going to get against the bottom feeders of college basketball, why not play the young guys? It can’t get worse than THAT

One stark reality is that there are limits to how effective a coach can be if the players aren't taking the game as seriously as they should, Even the GOAT ended up with a team that never seemed to care as much as he did about the outcome of the games they played.

I vividly remember him calling very early TO's, yelling, screaming, silent treatment, pulling players and making them sit for extended periods, basically every approach possible. As far as I'm concerned, if JC couldn't get the 06 team past George Mason, there may be situations where no coach can get it through their players' heads.

Because Hurley coached a horrible game. This was a historically bad Seton Hall team with no big men and Hurley played Tarris Reed 4 minutes to Samson's 27 minutes until Samson picked up his 4th foul. Because we're the highest level program there is in D1 basketball and he can't ever get his team to inbound the ball.

I don’t know why when there’s 3/four seconds left. We act like the game is over. That’s actually a fair amount of time and this is twice it happened at the end of the game where I’m like. What are we doing. Throw the ball down court make it a 50-50 and maybe something good happens
 
OK, I’ve calmed down. Just watched 3 fights in the first 9 seconds of Canada-USA, so catharsis.

1. The reason you run offense is to create open shots. This team seems to run the half out offense hoping for a defensive mistake to let them have an open shot. The offense has to run with purpose. What shot are we trying to create? Who do we want to take it, and from where? Is there a weak spot in the D we should attack? Where do we have matchup advantages? We have way too many late in the clock desperation heaves.
2. Once again we managed to lose to a team with one proven scorer. Just one. You’d think that would be the one guy you can focus the D on, particularly late in the game.
3. Inbounds plays. Yeah, everyone has mentioned it. But there has to be recognition and a plan. Is it man D.? Zone press? Guarding the inbounder or not? You have to have plays for all these situations. And remember, the D wants it in the corner, we don’t.
4. Hurley has to see these things and fix them. That we are this late in the season and still are having these problems isn’t good. Best coach? Prove it.*
5. The refs missed an astounding number of fouls in the last 3 minutes of regulation and in OT, particularly the trip on Ball at the end. Note to zebras: you may say you don’t want to decide the game. But you are deciding close games all the time. Sometimes by blowing the whistle. And sometimes by swallowing it.
6. Depth. Supposedly we are a deep team. We played 6 guys tonight, and the one who showed the most heart was an injured guy who couldn’t play last game. Depth is something you have to develop. Probably too late this year, but I would have liked to see Abraham play more.

* Yeah, I know, back to back NCs. In surgery you’re only as good as your last patient. And this one died.

Now I'm completely lost.

You responded to a tweet by a player (Alex Karaban) where he stated the players need to take these games more seriously by claiming ?Hurley needs to take that on himself and taske pressure off Karaban.

I askes you to elaborate on that, and pointed out that a hall of fame coach with considerably more experience in life and ib coaching college basketball at the highest level at the time wasn't able to get a team to put in the effort needed (implying that maybe it isn't always the coach).

Your response is that he coached a horrible game. Evidently you berlieve that the level of effort the entire team puts into each game is duer to Hurley's coaching that day (and perhaps how many minutes he gives Reed).

It’s wild to me that on a play like that they’re not catching the pass and feeding it back to the inbounder, Karaban. He’d have the option to catch it and dribble on the move or pass. The 10 second call is not a worry in that scenario. Alex is usually a solid free throw shooter.

#7 did not tackle Solo. Solo ran into #7 and then fell.

I'm sorry, but that's not a cut and dried foul. It looked like Ball lost control (which he did).

Refs were not in good position to see it- only one on baseline near inbounder & he was covering other corner. When pss went into Solo at other corner, he tried running back to play but was too late. Nearest other ref should have called the foul,, nut he was near half court and was too far away. It was an obvious foul- but the one on Liam where he was hacked across the wrists was even worse.

Yeah the USA Canada start was insane. This is a great matchup.

No more comments on the UConn disaster today

You don’t have to swing it to the opposite side of the pendulum.

Simply saying we’re working to be the best team we can be by the end of march would suffice on top of 100 ways to say you’re planning on being good without setting expectations too high.

Looking at it again, #33 should've been called for a foul. #7 didn't foul him. Ball was out of control by then (#33 shoved him in the back).

This is an elite staff who made some mistakes this year. With their success, we can live with that. There is no doubt in my mind they will make the necessary adjustments this offseason. But again, if you aren’t playing now, with this team, there is a reason why. If you are looking to develop on the court, drop down a level.

Obviously this was a tough loss but I am not putting this all on the coaches as most of you are. First and foremost, on the inbounds woes - it’s not like the team doesn’t practice for this. We were pressured like crazy in the St John’s game but were still able to inbound the ball. Seton Hall for some reason played lock down D. Ball also fell at one point and Karaban called the TO with none left. McNeeley launched the ball out of bounds. No matter what you practice, in game experience will always be different. I am not making excuses but it just didn’t go our way. It happens in sports all the time.

Second, how many guys were lost to the NBA over these past two seasons? We don’t have the same talent. Karaban is an all time UConn legend but he is not a #1 option. This team runs through McNeeley and he was out 8 games this year. That coupled with Karaban’s shooting slump and Diarra’s injury has basically meant that we were without three starters a majority of Big East play. Any team down three starter is going to lose some games. Fortunately for us is that we have been close in a lot of them. I think that bodes well for us down the stretch.

The Big East is a gauntlet. It’s like divisional NFL games - you are always going to get the absolute best out of your opponent. We are the two time defending champs. Seton Hall has absolutely nothing to play for. They were
Not going to just roll over and let us cake walk to victory. We were flat, Karaban said it was the players and I believe that. Hopefully this is a wake up call.

Finally, officiating. I’m not using it as an excuse but it’s been abysmal all season and today was no different. People are upset at the Ball foul at the end on the three point shooter but he played great defense the shooter was just able draw contact by falling into him. I hate that rule but it is what it is.

We have some great wins. Marquette and Creighton on the road. A very tough loss to St John’s. We can compete with anyone and I still think winning the BET is possible. I haven’t lost faith in this team. Karaban looks like he broken out of his slump. Diarra played well today and appears on the mend. McNeeley is McNeeley. I still think we can make a run.

The back defender did have his hands on him.

Solo could have just stood there and it would have been a better outcome.

That was a freshman mistake out of a junior. Complete brain fart. We had more than our fair share of those brain-dead moments from everyone. Solo fouling a 3-point shooter is another example.

We almost made out well, given the dude is a 25% FT shooter. And then he hits two, lol.
