Rothstein at Practice Today 7/15

Hurley likes bringing a player off the bench who will dynamically impact the game. I see Mullins being more capable of that than Stewart.
By default, Stewart starts and Mullins is first off the bench when UConn subs out any position other than center and PG.
If Mullins beats out JStew, he's starting. I think it will be an open competition. Furphy can be the spark of the bench.

Making a call right now - Furphy gonna leave UConn an all time favorite amongst fans.
Those glasses …

i've heard this one before recently....can't remember where....

Being 10 deep and playing a 10 man rotation are two different things.

Someone is always going to be hurt, or there will be foul trouble or match up issues.

Most games will be 8 guys with meaningful minutes and 9-10 picking up scraps.

Best part for me is practice will be tough and no one can rest on their past performance.

It's been said the past 2 pre-seasons that Stewie was going to surprise and open folks eyes, yet we only saw it very sparsely during the season. The athletic aspect is there but some players are not comfortable when the game lights go on. It would be wonderful if both Stewie and J Ross competed for PT and became consistent solid contributors.

Last season Stewie numbers in > 10 min a game:

SHU - 16min, 4 reb, 2 ast, 2pts
UNH - 11min, 1 reb, 1 ast, 4 pts
LEM - 15min, 3 reb, 5 ast, 2 pts
MEM - 16min, 5 reb, 0 ast, 16 pts
COL - 15min, 3 reb, 1 ast, 6 pts
UMES - 24min, 7 reb, 3 ast, 16 pts
BAY - 24min, 4 reb, 1 ast, 6 pts
GONZ - 19min, 3 reb, 0 ast, 10 pts
XAV - 20min, 1 reb, 2 ast, 2 pts
PROV - 17min, 4 reb, 0 ast, 4 pts

GTWN - 24min, 1 reb, 2 ast, 0 pts
CREI - 30min, 1 reb, 0 ast, 14 pts

DEP - 26min, 4 reb, 0 ast, 15 pts
MARQ - 21min, 5 reb, 1 ast 9 pts
SJU - 21min, 3 reb, 0 ast, 9 pts
CREI - 30min, 4 reb, 0 ast, 5 pts
HALL - 18min, 2 reb, 2 ast, 3 pts
SJU - 13min, 1 reb, 0 ast, 0 pts
GTWN - 15min, 3 reb, 1 ast, 5 pts
PROV - 16min, 0 reb, 0 ast, 0 pts

OU - 18min, 1 reb, 1 ast, 5 pts
FLA - 15min, 1 reb, 0 ast, 6 pts

That's a lot of minutes as a Sophomore, with 7 double digit point game and if he improves we want to see more rebounds, more points mainly with some good 3pt shooting mixed in.

His minutes went 8.9 as Frosh to 17.8 as Soph and moved up 3pt FG from 27% to 36%...so he is trending well.

The rebound numbers don’t look that good. 30 minutes against Creighton and 1 rebound? 8 games with zero or 1 rebound and 2 games with just 2?

The problem with assuming Stew will take a step forward is that we heard the same thing last year. And last year he had ample chances, particularly when Liam went down I am not sold on him as a consistent performer. I need to see it. Same with J. Ross. That's why I am huge on Furphy coming off the bench and making a huge impact this year. I PRAY that I am wrong. But if I am, we are good. Furphy is a player.

I think with Stew, his numbers will never jump out at you, be he is growing and everyone should see it and I think it will be more evident this season. I think he’s more like a Lamar Odom type, not in the way he plays, but meaning he just going to be a solid great piece and will do a little of everything and help the team win by doing his part. Play well in spurts and won’t be a liability when he’s out there.

Did you not read post #62? Doubling your minutes at the same time as you improve your 3pt % by 9 is a pretty good start. Consistency is an issue but if he makes a similar leap between his sophomore and junior years we will be a very hard out.

Stewie isn’t a guy that isn’t comfortable when the bright lights are on.

Do you watch UConn ball?

But some games Tarris or Samson were rebounding machines - Stewart was not asked to crash the board but be in position for slightly longer rebounds. To wit, Tarris had 24/18 vs Providence in like 18 minutes. Stewie got 0 rebounds but that is due to Tarris being a vaccuum.
