Rothstein at Practice Today 7/15

It's been said the past 2 pre-seasons that Stewie was going to surprise and open folks eyes, yet we only saw it very sparsely during the season. The athletic aspect is there but some players are not comfortable when the game lights go on. It would be wonderful if both Stewie and J Ross competed for PT and became consistent solid contributors.

Last season Stewie numbers in > 10 min a game:

SHU - 16min, 4 reb, 2 ast, 2pts
UNH - 11min, 1 reb, 1 ast, 4 pts
LEM - 15min, 3 reb, 5 ast, 2 pts
MEM - 16min, 5 reb, 0 ast, 16 pts
COL - 15min, 3 reb, 1 ast, 6 pts
UMES - 24min, 7 reb, 3 ast, 16 pts
BAY - 24min, 4 reb, 1 ast, 6 pts
GONZ - 19min, 3 reb, 0 ast, 10 pts
XAV - 20min, 1 reb, 2 ast, 2 pts
PROV - 17min, 4 reb, 0 ast, 4 pts
VILL - 32min, 3 reb, 2 ast, 14 pts
GTWN - 24min, 1 reb, 2 ast, 0 pts
CREI - 30min, 1 reb, 0 ast, 14 pts
BUT - 33min, 2 reb, 2 ast, 4 pts
XAV - 12min, 0 reb, 0 ast 0 pts
DEP - 26min, 4 reb, 0 ast, 15 pts
MARQ - 21min, 5 reb, 1 ast 9 pts
SJU - 21min, 3 reb, 0 ast, 9 pts
CREI - 30min, 4 reb, 0 ast, 5 pts
HALL - 18min, 2 reb, 2 ast, 3 pts
SJU - 13min, 1 reb, 0 ast, 0 pts
GTWN - 15min, 3 reb, 1 ast, 5 pts
PROV - 16min, 0 reb, 0 ast, 0 pts
HALL - 20min, 4 reb, 2 ast, 10 pts
VILL - 20min, 3 reb, 1 ast, 7 pts
CREI - 24min, 3 reb, 2 ast, 2 pts
OU - 18min, 1 reb, 1 ast, 5 pts
FLA - 15min, 1 reb, 0 ast, 6 pts

That's a lot of minutes as a Sophomore, with 7 double digit point game and if he improves we want to see more rebounds, more points mainly with some good 3pt shooting mixed in.

His minutes went 8.9 as Frosh to 17.8 as Soph and moved up 3pt FG from 27% to 36%...so he is trending well.

The rebound numbers don’t look that good. 30 minutes against Creighton and 1 rebound? 8 games with zero or 1 rebound and 2 games with just 2?

The problem with assuming Stew will take a step forward is that we heard the same thing last year. And last year he had ample chances, particularly when Liam went down I am not sold on him as a consistent performer. I need to see it. Same with J. Ross. That's why I am huge on Furphy coming off the bench and making a huge impact this year. I PRAY that I am wrong. But if I am, we are good. Furphy is a player.

I think with Stew, his numbers will never jump out at you, be he is growing and everyone should see it and I think it will be more evident this season. I think he’s more like a Lamar Odom type, not in the way he plays, but meaning he just going to be a solid great piece and will do a little of everything and help the team win by doing his part. Play well in spurts and won’t be a liability when he’s out there.

Did you not read post #62? Doubling your minutes at the same time as you improve your 3pt % by 9 is a pretty good start. Consistency is an issue but if he makes a similar leap between his sophomore and junior years we will be a very hard out.

Stewie isn’t a guy that isn’t comfortable when the bright lights are on.

Do you watch UConn ball?

But some games Tarris or Samson were rebounding machines - Stewart was not asked to crash the board but be in position for slightly longer rebounds. To wit, Tarris had 24/18 vs Providence in like 18 minutes. Stewie got 0 rebounds but that is due to Tarris being a vaccuum.

Yeah I watch in person and up close - thanks for asking Frenchie
You can see the hesitation in the eyes and the body signals of both Stewie and J Ross
Ive coached long enough to recognize it. Some kids need to talk to a specialist to get over it. It's all in how you handle expectations vs reality.
But I'll leave it to an expert as yourself
As I said the physicality and the skill sets are pretty much in place but it's taking that part and the mindset and making sure that one doesn't overwhelm the other.

I don't know if anyone has ever had the opinion that he doesn't play well because he's shrinking mentally in big spots - I think he's quite the opposite, actually. He's a gamer who isn't a lottery pick level athlete but has tons of skills and has a high level aptitude for the game.

I never said I'm an expert, but I do question that opinion - which is, in fact, what this board is all about.

I don’t think that Stew has any issues with the bright lights, at all. He had some big moments in big games when needed, he just tends to drift into the abyss when he can’t figure out how to contribute outside of buckets.

Gotta play D and board to be on the floor so that his offensive skills have a chance to have an impact on game outcomes. This is his year to capitalize on his talent. Or the young bucks are gonna grab his PT

My take on these numbers is consistency. If he can improve on that I think his numbers will improve

Yet according to some he hasn't gotten an opportunity . . .

I did not read that post, but I accept the point that he improved as a basketball player last year. I saw him play very nice D at times, and at times, he was prolific offensively. I would have two points of retort: first, he was being billed as a Lottery guy by some last year. That's not what I saw. Far from it. Second, last year it was either him or a very raw Ross. This year we have Furphy, who I believe will push him for minutes. My point is that he better elevate his game even more because of Furphy.

Sounds like "solid" muscle
This is a very interesting comment. Who decides his weight/muscle building regimen?
Why wouldn't he have worked on this before?
Other than Tarris we haven't had filled out bigs and it shows against some of teams we play where it looks like men against boys.

Some of it is likely how the staff wants the player to play. Adding weight/muscle can often come with reduced speed/quickness/stamina, so it’s a fine line of where the staff wants each player to be.

In most cases adding muscle adds good weight and contributes to speed, quickness and stamina. But you're right, it has to be done correctly. Which is why there is a person on staff whose job it is to figure that out.
