Rickea is obviously talented, but it seemed to me that she felt the need to score every time she touched the ball. She took a lot of bad shots, and it led to empty possessions and stagnant offense. She really was just a volume shooter. She could block shots now and again, but that was about it. I will be interested to see where she ends up. I was very surprised that she stuck around as long as she did.

I could see her playing for Dawn Staley, even though her squad is currently loaded. I say this because in my distant observation of her (Staley) I realize that she's one of those few leaders who sees the good in everyone, and so, she's willing to give someone a "second chance" in life. Life is a struggle for everyone - sometimes more so for others, than some. And so I can see where Dawn would be willing to give this young woman another chance at life.
PS: My latest example of Dawn giving a student athlete "another chance" is with T'ea Cooper, even though the squad at that tie time wasn't as stocked.

While it's obvious to everyone, including her, that the time spent at MSST as its HC was less than expected, right now she's again battling cancer. I personally will use this time to pray for her and her family. She's someone's daughter, sister, wife, mother, cousin, friend, etc. etc. etc. May she focus on her health, so that healing can once again allow her to live.

I don’t understand your thinking with regards to Rickea Jackson as it relates to “second chance” because this young lady has never been in trouble to the best of my knowledge. T’ ea Cooper punched a teammate in the face and was asked to leave Tn.
 
Rickea has not been in trouble at any time, but their have been some issues with chemistry. Biggest reason I don't think she goes to SC or Texas is she has dropped off on defensive intensity each year. She was giving up uncontested layups quite often this season and when she got the ball on offense she didn't look to pass. Neither of those issues will fly at SC or Texas or most of the best programs

I think people seriously underestimate what one player can do for the entire chemistry of a team (good or bad). There have been countless examples in recent memory. That isn't to say Rickea is problem at all.

If Rickea was a solid point guard, I could see Dawn giving her a chance, but unless we're expecting some transfers I don't see her coming to SC. She would have to be cool with reduced minutes and despite their close friendship, her and Zia probably shouldn't be in the same lineup. That's a lot of volume shooting at not the best efficiency for my taste.

Jackson wasn't a volume shooter under Vic. Averaged 12.7 shots per game as a freshman and shot 48% from the field. Under Dawn I think she'd be kept in check too.

Zia Cooke's shot selection has gotten better at SC but she just can't find the basket (33.6% FG this season, 27.5% from 3). Despite this, South Carolina looks like a much better team than last year IMO because the offense is going through Boston rather than through Cooke. Each time down it seems like SC makes a concerted effort to get Boston or a post player a touch. That wasn't the case last year, as far more plays were set up for Cooke to score.

This 100%. Adding in more talent to a championship caliber team has a history of not always helping even if that player is a wonderful teammate and contributor. Some notable examples:

2019 Notre Dame wasn't as good as the 2018 version despite having the same roster but upgrading Kat Westbeld with Brianna Turner.

2018 UCONN wasn't better than the 2017 squad (debatable, but I thought 2017 had better chemistry all year) despite returning everyone but Chong and adding in Stevens.

2013 Baylor wasn't as good as the 2012 version despite having all contributors back and adding in a very good freshman PG, Niya Johnson.

2007 Maryland was worse than the 2006 title team despite returning all 5 starters and bringing in a high profile transfer in Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood

2001 UCONN (even when fully healthy) wasn't as good as the 2000 team despite returning all rotation players plus adding in DT.

1999 Tennessee wasn't as good as the 1998 team with the same lineup but adding in Michelle Snow.


Right there are 6 teams that a lot of people had penciled in for a repeat title due, but the chemistry just wasn't the same once new talent was added in. A talented player like Jackson will definitely alter team chemistry at a program like SC since it forces player roles to change. If I'm Dawn Staley and know I have the chemistry and roster to win a title next year without Jackson, I'm not sure I'd go after her (or anyone else in the portal) solely for this reason, especially since she's likely WNBA bound after 1 more year. If I'm a team that is a piece or 2 away from being in the title hunt, or if there's a need at her position, I'd definitely pick her up.

Thats because she wasn't the "star" and Vic had a short hook when you didn't give max effort on D.

Right. But do you really think Dawn or any other top coach would let her off the hook for not playing defense? If she picks a good program she'll be held to a higher standard and will rise up to it.

Rely solely on 3 ball, lack of quality post play. They lost some pretty good players between N’Dea Jones, Cierra Johnson and Morris (who they didn’t really utilize)

I get what you're saying, and should've clarified my statement a little further. But my reasoning of "second chance" was not intended to mean Rickea was problematic, but merely that she might learn how to be a better teammate. At least, that's my interpretation from the comments here. However, I still think Coach Staley would be a great HC for her.

They lost 3 double digit scorers including their top 2. I don't think anyone thought A&M would be as bad as they are this year but they lost a lot to graduation compared to most strong teams from last season. I'd also expect Blair's retirement impacting the team to some degree.

I think part of it is that just about every other team in the SEC is better and they're worse.

I think that's true to a degree, but it's more than just that when you go from 13-1 in conference play to 1-6. Especially since they still have Jordan Nixon and Kayla Wells who should be able to lead the team to more in conference wins.
 
Will take her at Auburn. I wonder if coach Harris has reached out. We need all the talent we can get.

SC definitely need to hit the portal for a senior or grad point guard for insurance.

Fair point. They're definitely young but a combination of Cooper/Johnson (if healthy) should be strong.

She was a very efficient scorer as a freshman and she's still a good scorer and a defender.

She's an upgrade over the incumbent starter and the present level of play of the backups, but not sure inserting another talented player who has been forcing shots is the greatest idea.

Also I would like to see the kids.

Her best option to me is Texas or maybe Duke or Maryland.

to me that makes a lot of sense.

Even bringing in a starting caliber PG would make sense.

I do wonder how far young players patience can be stretched, but a year as a backup for Raven would be ideal.
