Rickea Jackson transfers

With likely one season remaining to be played before Rickea enters her name into the WNBA draft, she might need to ask herself a simple question about where she transfers -- what's better/less risky, the devil you already know (Vic) or the devil you don't know at all (Kim, Dawn, Jeff, Brenda, Yo, Kelly, Adia, Cori, etc.) ?

Jackson was a part of the recruiting class of 2019.. Jones, Boston, Cooke, Horston, etc.

That class is looking better and better each day as far as pro prospects.
Tons of talent in the 2019 and 2020 classes. The 2021 class has been underwhelming so far but there's a long way to go before those kids are getting drafted.

The two superclasses:

Azzi: injured
Raven: injured
Rivers: early injury. buried on depth chart early. Gettin' some PT, but shooting percentage very low
Feagan: buried behind Boston, Cardosa, Amihere.
Ducharme: Living up to billing.

Hall: doing okay. getting meaningful PT for Scar
DeBerry: Buried behind ONO
Poffenbarger: Transferred.

I disagree the 2021 class has been pretty decent! Morrow carrying DePaul, Durcharme carrying Uconn, Harmon down at Texas and Day-Wilson at Duke have all been really good for their programs!

Most people don’t know Rickea actually visited SC and Miss St TWICE during her HS recruitment. She visited both on an OV and then took an extra UV because she couldn’t decide between the two. I hope she gives Dawn a second chance. She fits the SC mold, we’re losing 5 seniors this year so she would definitely receive time or start, and she and Cooke are long time friends and hung out after the game a few weeks ago.

So basically you are telling me I should dismantle my Welcome to Duke Jackson 5 poster???

I agree and as someone said before, it's still too early to tell with this class.

There also are some interesting freshman in the Big 10. Barkowski of Nebraska, Ekh and Hageman of Michigan State and Sellers of Maryland have impressed. All have earned Freshmen of the Week awards at least once this season.

And don't forget Morrow out of the Big East. What she has done to date has been impressive.

Edit I know you mentioned her, but I feel it needed to be repeated. :)

I think she has the potential to be one of the better players in Wcbb with the right coach. LSU makes the most sense to me. Kim does well with kids who have somewhat of a reputation for trouble. And I have no doubt that she will recruit well this off season and Williams ends up there in two seasons as well
She ain’t going to LSU. Probably SC, Texas, Ole Miss, maybe Tennessee

Wildcard is Michigan

There are some good players no question, but the depth and impact pales compared to the 2019 and 2020 classes.

Kierstan Bell is possibly going pro this year, I read somewhere.
Diamond Miller has been injured a bunch this year, but she'll be playing pro ball.
Maybe Jakia Brown-Turner from NC State and Liz Kitley at Va. Tech. List goes on...

Yea...I saw Kierstan saying...she's out! Not in a bad way.

To me she came in as a 5 star but I don’t see where she has elevated her game much. In fact, it appears to me that she has just kind been in neutral during these three years.

Victoria Viviens improved each year plus she was the player that you trusted to get you that big basket. I have never had the same confidence in Rikea Jackson.

All that said , I wish her well and I hope she will be successful wherever she ends up.

SC seems pretty loaded. Is there a role for her there?

I mean, obviously, you always find a spot for a really good player but it seems crowded.

Then again, you could've said that before Cardoso went there.

She was instantly great right out of the gates. Vivians improved by the year it's true and became at her absolute best her senior year but Rickea didn't need this improvement because she was instantly a hit. Her worst year was her 2nd year with NMP.

A spot opens if Saxton chooses not to stay for a super senior season. Jackson has skills to play a similar way at that position that Kiki Herbert-Harrigan exhibited a couple seasons ago. I imagine Rickea could also during games, rotate over to play some on the wing, when Beal is out and Dawn goes to a two big combo.

The coaching change was a disaster for her and she definitely suffered greatly under the previous Coach.

Hopefully she will find the right fit and blossom there.

I do think Novak has done a good job under impossible circumstances. But Sadly, our women’s basketball program is now in mediocrity and does not appear that we are going anywhere but down in the years ahead.

Kiki Herbert-Harrigan was a beast mentally and very physical player. R Jackson is incredibly gifted and has the ability to score in bunches. However she is a wing player. She has not done well playing through physical contact.

KHH‘s outside jump shot allowed Dawn to often have her set up out away from the basket out to the arc. As great as Saxton has been for the Gamecocks, she’s an under the basket player that does not shoot jumpers all that often and doesn’t scare D’s when she’s away from the basket. That’s why you often see 6’5 Boston stationed around the arc to help open up the paint. With Jackson’s ability to hit shots out to the arc, you open up the middle and allowing Boston to likely start more offensive sets down low.

Jackson would fit in well as a 3/4. SC is so ridiculously loaded though already at that spot with Amihere, Cardoso, Feagin and Watkins coming in. Adding in Jackson gives them an upgrade but her presence might encourage others to transfer out, or be not happy on the bench.

Agreed, very different players and circumstances. Vivians was volatile her first few years since she often took really bad shots and was a volume shooter. She could keep Mississippi State in games but just as easily could shoot them out of games too. Her senior year she took smart shots in the flow of the offense and was brilliant, as she had a POY caliber season.

Jackson was a more polished player from day 1 but hasn't improved since her freshman year. I think she's a more natural athlete than Vivians and is a better creator from the perimeter and midrange. Had Vic stayed at Mississippi State and he built the offense around Rickea like most thought he would, I think Jackson would be giving Boston a run for her money in the POY race. Jackson had future star player written all over her and still does IMO if she finds a better coach/system.

Coaching

I think all the coaching changes and internal turmoil played a big role but you can’t deny her talent.

Agree. What South Carolina needs most out of the portal is a veteran PG to pair with Raven Johnson, hopefully one who is very dangerous from behind the arc.
