He didn't go to Portsmouth. Bigger hint.Newton Walked Senior night too. I hope that isnt a hint
He’s a double double next year for someone.I salute you Mr. Springs. Props for sticking around the program all this time even with playing time challenges. You still put in the work. Husky for life
Hopefully he figures out during the summer how to finish at the hoop at the end of a drive after a great steal. Otherwise, his contributions to this team during the season were substantial and appreciated.Yarin Hasson has. Hassan Diarra is expected to return next year
Now we start worrying we don’t have enough players. Did I get that right? Can we stop worrying about scholarships now?
I see a Josh Carlton type impact at a smaller school or conference. Honestly. St. John’s as well.I wouldn't say that. Richie was nice to have on the bench for a "break in the case of emergency" type scenario. Capable player with years of experience practicing under Hurley. It's been nice knowing that he's there (like when he was used earlier this season amidst our injury issues). He's better than the typical player taking up the 12th or 13th scholarship on a team.
With that being said, this isn't at all unexpected and I look forward to seeing what he does next season!
We really don’t know much about his game due to do so few real opportunities. After 4 years of Hurley practices I suspect he can get minutes at an A10 or MAAC team. I’m sure Dan Hurley will do what he can. Hope he gets a shot! He’s a double double next year for someone.
I was responding directly to @NJHoops who mentioned coaches reaching out to their network to support guys who are most likely to transfer down a level. I posted in agreement with NJHoops’ take. I believe Richie should transfer down so that he can get lots of playing time and potentially showcase some skills he wasn’t able to do at UConn. Not sure he’d be able to achieve that at SHU.What about just going to Seton Hall instead…they need some players
Gotcha! Thanks man, thought it was Hassan and that I missed it!no i said Hasson as in Yarin, not Hassan as in Diarra
I’m expecting a surpriseMust be more then one coming in to transfer here…..
In Hurley we trust. My guess too!!We currently have a lot riding on Johnson. We know as much about him as we did about Springs, they both look the part, beyond that......
If you factor in the potential for injury to a big man it probably would be wise to use the now available scholarship on a veteran 4/5 player. My guess is the staff is already working on it.
He may even get a few NIL dollars from the guy that abandoned Cuse and pledged his cash to Binghamton. This scenario is EXACTLY what I am wishing for with Richie. I hope Hurley rings his friend, SHU teammate, and current Binghamton coach Levell Sanders. Richie would earn a master’s from a great school (my alma mater), while he runs roughshod over America East.
All of those guys outside Richie redshirted because they enrolled early. They weren’t normal situations.Yes. Under Dan Hurley we've had 4 guys redshirt, including the one this thread is about. Akok Akok, Richie Springs, Corey Floyd Jr, Alex Karaban have all redshirted
It's definitely rare but definitely not a thing of the past. When teams are deep it's a good strategy, Villanova uses it a ton as well. Eric Dixon, Mikal Bridges, Angelo Brizzi were top 100 recruits and redshirted their freshman yearsAll of those guys outside Richie redshirted because they enrolled early. Redshirting is not common in college basketball.
The last person I remember redshirting for non medical reasons was Michael Bradley in 2012(?) I think. I forget if he was a Calhoun or Ollie recruit.
Yeah I wasn’t familiar with Villanova. They’re pretty different over there with the way they do things. It's definitely rare but definitely not a thing of the past. As evidenced by Corey Floyd though, it's a risk with the transfer portal. Even when the kids are supposedly bought in to the plan
Doesn't really seem like it. I don't think it'll ever go away completely, but with NIL and the transfer portal I can't see many top guys wanting to sit so I do agree from that standpointYeah I wasn’t familiar with Villanova. They’re pretty different over there with the way they do things.
Does anyone else redshirt guys they expect to contribute eventually though? It seems like for us, every single redshirt eventually doesn’t go on to actually play later on.
He’s an active and excellent rebounder.Every time he entered a game he just looked the part and that he could have contributed. I never understood why he didn't play more but then I didn't see him in practice everyday. I hope he finds success wherever he lands. Watch him kill it for some mid-major.
I literally said he will have a Carlton effect wherever he goes!!Nah. He's going to the AAC. Kelvin Sampson will make him all-conference!
Best of luck Richie. You were a soldier.
The ‘cuse still just a midSo you think he’s headed to Syracuse.
FINAL JEOPARDYThanks for your hard work in practice Richie. Enjoy having the same number of rings as Jim Boeheim.
