Providence Post Game Thread

Will a loss or two shape this team better?

I wouldn't mind if the tradeoff was that we brought an A game or two around it and just crushed a team or two. Then the issue would be consistency and finding that A game level more often, as opposed to not seeming to have that level in us.

Opinion.
The initial post by a BYer stating their view on a subject. These are welcome, they’re the reason for why the boneyard exists.

Discussion.
The second post by a BYer defending and/or clarifying their view on the same subject. Having a dialogue with opposing (or supportive) views is both informative and welcome.

Arguement.
The third, fourth, fifth…post by a BYer on their same initial subject, defending to the death their opinion. You stated your opinion, you’ve defended it, now you’re bringing nothing new to the table worth commenting on. This is not worthy of the boneyard.

If you want, I will stay out of the haiku thread, make us lose the get back in it to see if it helps.

Least we not forget, we would have won the 2024 title by an even higher margin if we had pushed Newton out and brought AJX back. That team would have been much more fun and even better, and it would have gotten AJX ready for the NBA.
I have read lots of dumb things here but this one….! Holy cow.

I didn’t know Karaban was one of the best players this century who actually played close to perfect basketball when in. At a position where only one person can play at a time.

This is what I’m talking about with Karaban’s treatment. He is not Okafor. But you all will put him in that same light as far as how needed he is.

My head is about to explode. Hilton stated 22 games at the 4 with Emeka at the five. He then backed up Marcus White and was part of a rotation with Mike Hayes and Justin Brown- guys you probably haven’t heard of. Hilton then backed up Boone, Mek, and Charlie V, then Boone and Charlie V with Ed Nelson. Rudy Gay was the 3.

You asked for proof of JC having a leash. I get you several guys. First the stars. You said that didn’t count. Then I gave you role players and you said they don’t count because there were better players in dront or them and that you didn’t know. You know, the exact same situation as Ross and Stew. Ready? Karaban is better than Stew and Ross.

So at this juncture I want to know what is your point with all of this? You want more time for Stew and Ross? They are not as good as the guys ahead of them. Which you said was justified in JCs case.
So what is the point?

I promise you the goalposts will continue to move forever.

Karaban - senior captain, QB, trustworthy.

The longer we go between seeing A games, I am starting to wonder if we’re seeing it, but it’s just not very good.

We’ve now played 85 minutes against Providence and the takeaway is that we seem to be a little bit better than they are. We have not moved forward yet in the way that other potential one seeds have. We’re needing overtime and late game rallies to squeak out these Quad 2 wins - need to get better over the next six weeks.

It's just weird how Reed gets so many boards on both sides; but rarely dunks in close. Odd to me
Agree…he’s obviously strong and bodies up well but in person I honestly don’t think he gets off the ground more than 12-18 inches

correct, I ended up googling him during the game because I was surprised to see him calling a game. Broadcast was kinda bizarre with him and Spero Dedes constantly bringing up Providence trying to get another quad 1 win to boost their resume, Providence's tourney chances ended awhile ago.
It feels like the fragmentation of streamers broadcasting our games has directly led to ill-informed color commentators.

Honestly, I was so GD happy not to have to listen to Donny last night that I didn’t even notice. The guy could have come out and just read the owner’s manual for his microphone and I would have been happy with the broadcast.

The team as it looks today looks more vulnerable to getting knocked out by an 8 seed than it does making an NC run.

I remember that. I think he went off for about 25 in his sophomore or junior year.

He ate up that zone. But, I swear he always went for 15+ when JC would get ejected or had missed the game. Howie let the crappy defense slide for endless dagger 3s. Someone on here called Fair and “poor man’s Rash” - Fair was a better pure shooter. Just didn’t have the green light stash did.

The way he held stars accountable made them better. I didn’t say it didn’t count. It pushed them to not be like a Karaban who we can watch make mistakes and have iffy game after iffy game as a leader of the team.

You didn’t see that with the Calhoun star pupils because he didn’t let that stuff slide.

You’re saying Marcus White being behind 4 different guys is the same as one of Ross or Stewart having to start/backup a position who ARE the rotation.

It would be like Calhoun having Dehnam Brown run PG in 06 when we didn’t have Marcus Williams instead of just trusting Craig Austrie.

Which was pretty much our situation last year when Diarra went down.

Believe it when I see it! Big double Bigs fan here 😁

It’s the defense factor. Most 4’sin CBB are mobile types. You want Reibe or Reed checking Jones or Ajayi on the perimeter?

Would’ve been something to do with Samson maybe, but Reibe and Reed are more lumbering types.

How has this thread becomes a Calhoun coaching thread?

Man, the love-to-be-miserable crowd is just eating this up. Scared to think what will happen when we actually lose a game
I think I'd be ok with a loss - winning is boring.

Maybe we’re not yet the dominating force we thought we would be at the beginning of the season. Maybe we’re only slightly better than the teams we’ve been squeaking by lately.

But I’ll tell you this, I’d much rather be 20-1 than lose four or five of those games and be 15-6.

Huh? You missed it. Again. Because you didn’t see it. Marcus White was a top 80ish recruit who decommited from DePaul and was a late add. He was talented. But JC wouldn’t play him. Hilton, a project freshman, started. He had no leash whatsoever and was part of a rotation of mediocre guys at the 4 and 5. Eventually, JC got sick and Blaney decided to let Marcus White play. And he was good. Hilton was regulated back to very spot time.

On your accountable stars thing, explain Freeman in 2000? That was horrific. Maybe part of the problem is that Stew has been so ineffective that Hurley, you know the guy with two nattys, knows that AK has to play extended minutes.

Stew is your backup 3/4 and Ross your backup 2/3. Neither is as good as the guy ahead of them. Stew has gotten 20+ starts and extended minutes where he has continued to be who he is. Ross got a couple starts last year and bench minutes and he has been mediocre.

Karaban is given the extra leash bc he is a four year starter, is indispensable to the culture and offense, and despite his various warts, has hit 9000 big shots, been clutch, is the connector, is one of the main cogs of the offense, is the captain of the team, the leader and a ton of other things. He’s got a leash. Is he as good or dominant as Okafor? Of course not. Nobody here said he is. But he is as important to this team as Emeka was to his. Simply put, we are a better team with AK out there. He’s earned the leash and gives us a better chance of winning. Until Stew or Ross gives more than moments, they will not be given the same leash. Nor should they. Let’s be honest, year three, they have underachieved and underwhelmed.

So you don’t post nearly as much about the X and Os or game execution as you did way back when (before kids and when you had no life - The Paul Millsap days). I’ll poke to see what you think is wrong here.
