Players Using COVID Year

Sorry for the late response. As you can see, the three players I expected to return are returning. The players on the 2022-23 were incredibly close unlike the disaster squad that was a "me" instead of "we" squad. Officially, the Terps are at a full 15 scholarship squad. From what I can see, there are only three players that "could" transfer. (I won't name them). But the roster appears to be set for now.

Is miller going to the W?

The covid year decision was made in Sept before the season started - no one knew what was going to happen, how many games would be played, whether there would be any conference or NCAA tournaments or if the season might be cancelled half way through. The pandemic was raging, classes were on-line, and it was a way to assure student athletes that if they committed to their team, they would not lose a year of eligibility should their season disintegrate. A few schools cancelled their season after it had already started, nobody ended up with a full season, but it all went better than people believed it would at the start of the season. If the NCAA could have taken a 'do over' they probably would have, but they had made the commitment and had to stick by it.

The people most screwed by the covid year are the HS classes from 2021 on, because they have no idea who will be exercising their 5th year option at the school they are committing to, and their development may be stunted by all the players staying an extra year. Add in the explosion of the transfer portal and NIL making an extra year a money making proposition for some of the players, and a careful development plan has gone out the window (increasing the transfer portal numbers as well.)

Wow this should be a wake up call for the WNBA that so many pro-level players are choosing to stay in college an extra year. I don’t blame the players at all
But think of each following class, facing a larger and more talent group of new pro hopefuls swelled by the 5th year players running out of eligibility.

The WNBA has a big problem. Too many players aren't in a rush to get there.
I can see this trend continuing next year as well. It’s at least somewhat likely that both Clark and Bueckers use the Covid year

Celeste Taylor will be back for Duke

This is awesome. I thought I remembered her saying that she’d be leaving after this year, glad Kara isn’t losing her just yet.

I think there are plenty who aspire to be there but the limited number of rosters spots means only about a dozen or so recent college players actually wind up on a team in a given year. Competition for spots is fierce and the money is small relatively speaking so it's no surprise many are opting in.

Paige can stay three more years. Doubt she will, but she could.

I just think it’s not a great look for the league that players, like Celeste Taylor, who would almost certainly make a roster are choosing to stay in college longer

I think the big problem is that there are so few spots in the league, so unless you're projected to be a top 5-10 pick, your odds of making a roster, let alone getting much playing time, are slim. None of the projected first rounders have announced they intend to use a 5th year aside from Rickea Jackson. All of the players on this thread are solid college players but aren't likely to make a roster if they did declare.

Absolutely that's part of the problem.

I'm not sure she would. She's a great defensive player but has always been inefficient offensively and lacks a consistent jumper.

Yep, she was definitely taking a risk leaving this year. Glad she decided to take another year to develop.

Same--she's a fun player to watch and could help elevate Duke to be an elite program.

A lot of veterans that are still in shape to compete against (e.g. Taurasi, Parker, etc.) also makes it challenging. Longer playing careers also has an effect.

Not so sure. Look at who was drafted in the first round and didn't make a roster last season. Even if she were drafted, there's no guarantee she'd stick.

100% accurate.

Does anyone know of a place where you can see the list of who has declared for the WNBA? I didn't see anything on the WNBA website and have no idea where to look on the ESPN app or website. Except for the teams in the Elite Eight, the deadline has passed, so any seniors that didn't declare most likely will be playing somewhere next season.

Jacy Sheldon has officially announced she will be back at OSU next season.

Let's go that's great for the women's game next year. OSU becomes a legit contender again.

That's true also because so many WNBA teams have concluded that the best use of the cap space is to spend the salary you would have paid your 12th player on upgrading one of the other 11. Half the teams don't even use that last roster spot.
