Paige's Wings Page (merged thread)

Paige had 19 points and 8 assists or accounted for at least 35 points being half of the Wings output. You play through Paige you get rewarded for running the floor, good cuts, and good rolls. The chuck em up offense I have seen from some players on this team just has to stop if they are going to become a good team. What some others players have not realized yet apparently is that their teammate is the most unselfish player probably in the W. Paige is going to transform this team.

The way I understand it, that +/- stat isn't really very useful in a single game.

Sorta like if a light-hitting 2nd baseman goes 3 for 4 with 2 homers and a single one day, he's not really a .750 hitter, nor is he a 2.250 slugger. (but he was that one day...)

The +/- thing is useful as a longtime stat, like 10 or more games, preferably more.

But yeah, Arike need to pass the ball, then get herself open. Paige will find her right quick...

In addition to the excellent points you made, I'd add that Caitlin was also Indiana's second straight number one pick. Not that she wouldn't have been a transformational player by herself, but adding her alongside Aliyah Boston gives them an amazing young core to build on for years to come. In this analogy, Paige is the Aliyah; she's the foundation. I don't see a Caitlin in next year's draft class, but there is a Lauren, an Azzi, a Flau'jae, etc. As you alluded to, last night's game was just the beginning for this version of the Wings.
That would really be something if Dallas could get Betts to pair with Paige! It would take a lot of losing but unfortunately, that’s pretty much what I think is in store for Dallas this season. It’s gonna be a tough season for our Paige but hopefully she can come out of it healthy and better prepared for next season with (hopefully) another top player to pass the ball to!

It gives equal weight to effectively team offense and defense... not the player directly. A player could individually perform exactly the same with a combination of 4 other players, but if the collective team on the floor results are different... for better or worse, then the player +- follows suit. If Paige hadn't played 36+ minutes...meaning she played through high and low production she would be negative too. She played well and was +2. That's why I don't feel this is an indicator to access player performance. As a coach, I would conclude that the lineup I put on the floor is the wrong lineup. Or maybe I expect to lose ground because I choose to rest my best players while I have a comfortable lead.
I can't help but think that in this instance, the +/- is an "indicator of player performance." Or if not an indicator of "player performance," then an indicator of a player's impact on the game. Paige played almost 37 minutes and was plus 2. The Wings were outscored by 8 points. That means in the three minutes she wasn't on the court, the Wings were outscored by 10 points. Now, a lot of factors other than the quality of Paige's performance could theoretically account for that deficit. But sometimes the simplest explanation is the correct one. Paige played well and was critical to the Wings' ability to compete, and when she wasn't on the court, the opponent exploited her absence. Sometimes, plus/minus stats are not telling, but they are here.

Wings made a better game of it, but still came up short. Paige with her first double double, 12 points, 10 assists. Wings created 19 Lynx turnovers. Collier 12 for 12 on free throws sealed the deal.

I only watched the fourth quarter. Didn't see much of an offense for Dallas, just pass it around the perimeter, then chuck up a three. Paige was looking for her teammates, but I didn't see anyone looking to help Paige get open. Arike was 8 for 20, Paige was 3 for 11. Paige led the team in minutes played with 37:16. Wings are definitely a work in progress.

I just asked in another forum…if Paige or Arike is the PG. I know it can happen where a mismatch occurs on defense, but is it me or does Paige look to be guarding the opponent’s 3 or 4 a bit much?

Well it's nice she had her first dbl dbl seeing she only had 5 in her career at Uconn

They can both start an offense and take the ball up, but I think Arike is way better off ball than on it, while Paige can succeed at either role. Ty Harris is probably the most natural PG on team, and I think she needs to see more minutes as she recovers from injury. Wings looked a lot better tonight on both offense and defense--they also missed a lot of wide open threes. But I saw way less forcing shots on offense--it was obvious they had watched tape of the last game.

Let's see. There were 3 games tonight. That's six teams of players involved. Of all the activity tonight only ONE player jacked up 20 shots. Of course you know who that was. Until that dynamic changes in Dallas that team will go nowhere. It sure as hell won't change with a first year no experience head coach.

Like all data, it's a tool and like all data it's easy to misuse it or over interpret it. I agree with you that it has very little usefulness over a single game, but as the sample size grows, it does become relevant and helpful information.

There are some players that don't always fill up the stat sheet but contribute greatly to the team success. Nika has been like that over much of her career. For those types of players plus/minus stats help to reveal their contribution.

Think about a player who plays great defense, which forces the other team to play at a pace they're not used to. She might not score many points, or get a steel or a block, but the value of her play is more than the sum of her stat line.
