Oskar Giltay Stanford Center possible transfer?

I actually think I may prefer this guy to Chol based on how scrawny Chol is. I like this dude's highlight tapes and trust the staff to get the scout right.
He does have a good build. He's pretty muscular for a young guy with very little body fat. Wide shoulders, strong legs. He could easily be 250 lbs next season and still look lean.

I want to know why his playing time went down so much later in the season for a team that played in The Crown.

Stanford. It came from Stanford. The school he currently attends. Stanford.

He's literally listed as a forward/center by Stanford.

The answer is Stanford.

Stanford.
college listed is meaningless. look at what he does. he's a 5

Meaningless is some oaf on a message board who had never heard of the kid three days ago and has watched 42 seconds of YouTube clips.

.-.
I'm sold too. He looks good, all we can want in a backup 5!
Watching his highlights, I like what I saw. Nice footwork and instincts around the basket. Gets off the ground and can dunk. Nice technique on D getting blocks and not reaching down where bigs tend pick up fouls, like Reibe far too often did. And he's just a rising sophomore.

Sign me up.

A very valid question that I don't know the answer to unfortunately. That being said, I could see him getting to a place where he can give us a solid 12-18mpg next year with help from the staff. His skillset looks like a good fit for what we want out of our back up 5. Pretty good athlete especially at that size.

I think it would be the other way around if we get both him and Chol. Chol has has more tools to play the 4 despite his height. Giltay is more of a Center with his skillset.
Based on the clips of both prospects, I tend to agree. I think both can play the 5 depending on the matchups and both maybe the 4 when needed, especially Chol who has a nice face up and solid handle for a player his length. I love the idea of the roster flexibility at the 4 & 5 adding both in addition to Hines and Khamenia.

Hope we can afford both and the staff having a convincing argument to land both.

As long as Hurley likes him, then I am good with him. He has been to three Finals in four years and won two

A bit short. Probably an inch shorter than Tarris and 3.5 inch shorter wingspan. He certainly has the physical strength, size in chest/shoulders and huge hands. The point is we have to get a legit 7'0 foot center to share minutes with him, capable of giving us 15 very good minutes per game.
Who are your preferred guys?
How much will it take to get them?
Do we have enough?

I freely admit that I was strong in my belief that Hurley would not go into next year without going out and bringing in a backup point guard in addition to a freshman.

I was and am still surprised that anyone on this board or Hurley is comfortable with a freshman combo guard as the soul backup to Demary going into next year after what happened last year when we went with Diarra and Nowell (and Mahaney).

Ok, so Hurley is on board with it too. Far be it from me to question the logic, but I will also say let's revisit this once next year gets going. Because by the middle of last year practically everyone on this board, and I mean EVERYONE was lamenting our lack of depth behind Diarra. And we all know that it caused significant harm to the season, and our final results.

But hey, if the best men's college basketball coach in America is comfortable with it, I have nothing more to say about it. And if it all works out for the entire year next year, I will come on the board and eat crow. Here's hoping I am wrong.

Apparently we’re also pursuing another combo guard, btw.

The build along with his seemingly natural aptitude to block shots and rebound is quite encouraging. Sure it would be nice if he were less raw and had more length, but I do trust in the staff's ability to coach up bigs that show an inclination toward getting better (and I guess we will have to see if he is properly motivated).

It is also nice that he will also be a sophomore next season to continue the trend of players that can be assets next year and then even better the following year.

Why are you comparing today to 26-27 years ago?
One center was from 27 years ago and if we could win a NC with his stats I think there's a lot of needless worry here.
He was a four year starter, and averaged 5.5 points and 6.4 points as a junior when we won the first NC.
As a freshman he had slightly poorer stats than Hines in similar minutes.
We beat a loaded team because we had great scoring from the backcourt and small forward and solid defense and other contributions from our other two front court guys and much lower rated backups than we will have next season.
For next year we're thinking we'll have similar or even more impactful players in the backcourt and small forward positions plus we have a center all the experts, in the real world and here, believe will be a monster.
If we add a 4 or Khamenia fills that spot we ought to be really good.
Bottom line is 27 years ago seems similar in the big picture and we shouldn't need and probably can't afford the three additional high level, starter quality players (center, 4 man and point guard) some here believe we need to do what we all want to do..

What hill is he dying on? Boone started his entire freshman season at power forward on the '23-24 national championship team.
being a pedantic know-it-all on a post that was designed to be a joke about having a big ass.

btw, since we're pointing out insignificant details, you're wrong on the bolded part,

Maybe Giltay is another potential Ed Nelson type? If not, who might he compare to among past UConn players?

Why because he is big white guy? Different type of players. Ed Nelson was more of an offensive player while this guy is defensive.

We did OK with a high-energy rim running backup 5 in 2024.

Samson only averaged 5.4, 2.8, and 1 block. He was an impact off the bench just with size and energy.

Giltay ranks in the ACC:
  • 3rd in block rate
  • 14th in steal rate
  • 16th in DR%
  • 20th in OR%
Long story short Giltay is a young, blue-collar, low-usage, team-first center for UConn's depth.

He'd have nice value as a defensive backup center, but I also feel that if we add Giltay, we can also add a guy who is a more impact 4, who can also possibly earn minutes as a small-ball 5.

I value your opinion - do you prefer Giltay or Machot?

Boone was 6th in minutes in the NC year. You wanna die on that hill, be my guest.
O.K., it’s going to be this type of day?

What hill? He started 37 of 38 games and averaged more than half of each game on the court (meaning he wasn[t like Olander in ‘11). Do you have your own language we need to be translating to?

The past 4 seasons we went with at center-

'23- 6'9 245 lb 7'2.75 wingspan and a 7'2 barefoot dominant defensive player as his backup.

'24- 7'2 dominant center and a 6'10 7'5 wingspan as his backup.

'25- 6'11 7'5 wingspan, 6'10 7'5 wingspan splitting time equally at center.

'26- 6'11 7'5 wingspan, 7'1 (not really that tall) as his backup.

'27- so far 6'10 7'1.5 wingspan

The other top teams in college basketball are going bigger and some are trying to rationalize us going a lot smaller than we have any year in our 4 year run. Makes no sense.
I'm not giving up on Diop until he commits elsewhere. Ricky fenagled a visit for him and I'd bet that Danny will get him if they can find a way. Danny's brother recruited him to ASU and coached him. If they got along he could be an important ambassador. He may well be a first round pick the following year. We would be a top five threat every year those two are a tandem. Have Lamont check the rainy day fund status. We are, after all, the Basketball Capital of the World.

Good, not towering length. Can rebound and defend, not foul too much. Will get bigger. Probably OK or OK+ basketball IQ. Hurley wants D in the middle and scoring on the perimeter. Won't cost a fortune.
Trust Hurley. He knows what he is doing.
