Well, it was 32-31 approaching halftime before MSU went on a 11-0 run. I think that qualifies as close, and it was definitely more than 5 minutes into the game.

I'm noticing in the box score of the Texas game that McCarty appears to be absent. I wonder if she's injured or sick or what gives.
 
Great game tonight for the very appreciative fans at the Hump. McCowan - 35 points, 19 rebounds and 5 blocks! To me, MSU earned the number three ranking tonight. I expect they'll thrash Tennessee, and their matchup against conference rival South Carolina on February 5 looms very large.

I think you'd have to watch more than 1 game to really appreciate her. Coming into the game she was averaging 17 points 7 rebs 8 assists per game, 48% from the floor and 53% behind the arc. That's pretty darn impressive all around stats, I think tonight was a bit of an off game for her. And MSU is one of the toughest defensive teams in the country.

The Tennessee-MSU game is in Knoxville and might be closer than you think. I'd expect a blowout if they were playing in Starkville. Both of these teams have gotten *very* comfortable playing at home.

Problem is that Harris last year had her way with Miss. St. and Aja neutralized McCowan and Bianca Cuevas-Moore always disrupts itty bitty. Maybe a little bias, but I still put UConn, ND, and South Carolina ahead of them. Just sayin..
 
MS putting it to OSU and the bench so in your face, this is going to be so sweet to put a beat down on them.

So McCowan is the real deal. One of the more mobile 6-7 players I’ve seen and she is strong inside. Great finisher and rebounder....she has huge upside. I still want to see her perform at a high level against the likes of Aja or Kalani before immediately declaring her a high pick next year. Love what I saw today though.

Vivians was also unreal in the second half. If she continues to shoot efficiently and play smart, she should be a high pick in the draft. A big shooting guard with unlimited range, a quick release and a great frame...all of those traits bode well for her. Today she was on fire but I want to see more of her this year before I remove “bad shot selection” under her weaknesses.


Lots of season to be played, but I can’t imagine Mississippi State looking much better than they did today offensively. They were outstanding.

Vivians is the key. She plays anywhere near how she played today, MSU is our toughest matchup. She played poorly almost all of last year and through the tournament.

One thing I will say is that Oregon's finesse game proved not to match up well against Mississippi State. Teams with better quickness and physicality (e.g., Louisville, South Carolina, Tennessee) will have a much better chance of making Vivians and McCowan less comfortable and, well, not giving up 90 points.

I kept wondering why Oregon wasn't keying in on Vivians and letting the tall gal get her thirty or forty since it was obvious they weren't going to stop her.

I was impressed with what I saw from McCowan tonight but I have to say I agree with you. Miss State seems to be trying to take a page from SC playing 4 guards and 1 post but they still don't have anyone who can matchup with Wilson while Cliney and Cuevas-Moore can neutralize William and Vivians. Looking forward to our matchup.

No one in the SEC will go undefeated. I'm calling that one right now.

If there's one team that maybe has an outside shot at it, it'd be Mississippi State because they get SoCar at home and the only teams they play twice are Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Florida.

South Carolina not only travels to Starkville, but they have to play both Tennessee and Missouri twice each.
Tennessee gets Miss State at home, but they have to play both South Carolina and Texas A&M twice each.
 
One thing I noticed is that McCowan likes to defend from the protected arc under the basket and when the Oregon players drove they kept trying to shoot over her and around her with little success. McCowan has slow feet. What I suggest is that they drive right at her to create contact. As long as McCowan has a foot in the arc it's a blocking foul by rule despite who initiated the contact. With her on the bench Miss St's interior defense isn't that tough to beat.

I watched Sabally play in the Jordan Classic and she really impressed me despite only scoring 3 points. The guards in that game tend to be a bit selfish. I thought she was the best looking player on the floor, impacting the game without scoring. I don't know if Kelly will start her in place of MeGuire. She is perfect coming off the bench because she can sub at any position. I did think he should have brought her in earlier though. I think she was the player who would have given MSS the most difficulties. If she drives to the basket she has the combination of skills and height to give McCowin trouble. She drew two fouls in a row on two drives. The last drive she attempted should also have been a foul bcause there was a lot of body contact.

Her sister Nyara is an inch shorter, more strudily built while also possessing similar shooting and ball handling skills.

I am also surprised that Graves didn't try their 6'6" player Giomi on McCowin for at least a few minutes to see if she might have done better defensively.She is not as polished offensively as his other players but she does seem to play intense defense and covers more territory. McGuire is a really good outside shooter but she is not that great of a defender.

Agreed. Honestly I think Mississippi State is going to be very vulnerable against teams with size and who play good defense. If Vivians has a cold night and the opposing team can neutralize McCowan, a lot of teams will hang closely with Mississippi State. I still like this team's chance to make the Final Four if McCowan and Vivians bring consistent play.​
 
Mississippi St is a FINAL 4 team, Uconn will meet them again. 35 points for Morgan 30 for Vivians, McGowan over 21 first half and their defense is excellent with little let down with subs. Well coach, used the same techniques to beat Oregon they used to defeat Uconn. I suggest Geno start getting his frosh and sophs ready now . Run Morgan and Vivian's ragged with face guarding for 40 minutes--Morgan may take it it but Vivians won't. Azura if she can stay out of foul trouble will negate McGowan, maybe. Start now, Mss St is a good team..

Tells me we may meet Mss St in the final 4, they are under ranked and better than I expected, Oregon is over rated and not as good as I expected. Miss isn't /wasn't just a flash last April, they are good.

That's probably right. Whoever wins the SEC will probably have a couple of losses.
 
MSU really looked good. McCowan has developed much better than I thought she would. She is the closest thing to Brown there is in the game. I still give Kalani the edge but it is much closer than it was last season. And she seems to have a lot of fun, which I love. She has obviously put in a lot of work and I am a big fan.

Vivians can really shoot the ball. I don't know how Oregon kept losing her last night and letting her shoot the three-ball. That always baffles me when the best shooter on the court has no defender around her.

William is the perfect PG for that team. She keeps her dribble alive and just keeps scooting around the court until something opens up on offense.

MSU may be the second best team in the nation.
