2026 Recruiting: Olivia Vukosa

I didn't say she wasn't athletic but she's certainly nowhere near A'ja Wilson, Stewie or Napheesa as an athlete......she has a combination of skills, smarts and strength combined with that motor you mentioned.......BTW I don't think you have to be particularly athletic to have that motor......plenty of average athletes have been successful because they have that desire/motor while plenty of exceptional athletes have failed because they didn't have it...
To this day, people have differing thoughts on whether Larry Bird was athletic or not. LB is also in the GOAT conversation, so it doesn't really matter (for Jokić as well). I would be thrilled if the Big O has the ability to take Indiana State to the championship game basically by herself. Of course she will have loads of talent around her over the next four years.

Just another compilation from last Thursday's game (12/11)

For me, the best part of this compilation was early on, Olivia blocks a shot and gains possession of the ball (too many times players go for the loud block and knock it three rows deep, I'm too young to have watched Bill Russell, but I'm told he was very skilled at keeping the blocks in play to gain possession). Right away she is looking down the court for a teammate streaking towards the basket, but she has the maturity to not make an ill-advised pass when it wasn't there. That's high basketball IQ right there.

Big O ranked #1 in 2026 by Blue Star.

This isn't a surprise. Blue Star Basketball was founded by Mike Flynn in 1976. The Philadelphia Belles AAU basketball club was founded by Flynn in 1978. The Belles transitioned and evolved into the now Philly Rise summer circuit team. Vukosa has been the top player for the Philly Rise for the last 2-3 years. It's not that Vukosa does or doesn't deserve the ranking but the bias is fairly obvious. Rankings mean little to me so I'm glad UConn got Vukosa.

Taking in the performance from the stands was Rebecca Lobo. The former Southwick girls basketball star won the national championship with UConn in 1995 and has her No. 50 jersey hanging in the rafters there.

“This is my first time seeing her play, I’ve seen stuff on social media but this is my first time seeing her play,” Lobo said of Vukosa. “I feel for her man because she’s getting surrounded by triple teams, getting the heck beaten out of her, but she’s still being very productive. It’s going to be fun to watch her next year when she’s surrounded by that level of talent at UConn.

Vukosa has been placed on the midseason Naismith POY team.

Other UConn POI who made the list:

Ivanna Wilson-Manyacka, Kaleena Smith, Jezelle Banks, Tatianna Griffin, Jordyn Palmer, Eve Long, Sydney Savoury
